Submarine Operations on the Rocks at Hell Gate, TO THE EDITOR oY THE IRRALD. ‘The long- continued and severe cold weather compelled M., Maillefert to suspend operations on the rocks at Hell | Gate, until Monday, the 2d instant, when he ro com. } | | menced firing om Pot Rock; and, since that time, has | continued his submarine o weather was favorable for bl cold may best be illustrated by the brief statement of the fact that Long Island Sound was frozen over—the icy | bridge extending from the island to the main land, and reaching to within less than a mile of Pot Kook. Of 1,488 hours, comprising the entire months of Decem- ber and January, there were 1,155 hours during which the temperature was below the freexing point; and of the remaining 333 hours, the greater portion of the time storms or high winds prevailed to such an extent as to wholly suspend submarine operations. The firing on Pot Rock can only be effected during the continuance of slack water, which, ia the commencement of operations, lasted only from eight to sixteen minutes, Between the 7th of November and the 12th of Debember, most of the charges fired on Pot Rock were in water of greater depth than twenty fest, with a view to the re- moval of the rock to the depth ‘of twenty four feet. At present, the charges are beivg fired on isolated points of | the Tock, between nineteen and twenty feet; the sound- ings for which, during the short period allowed by slack water, necessarily make the operations slow. The difficulties with which the operations at Hell Gate are surrounded are far from abating the energy and good courage of M. Maillefert. He recommenced operations on the first favorable day,and confidently trusts that, ere long, he will be able to complete this great and useful work, whioh become an object f general interest, sud ta the execution of which, so far, he has been emi- nently aud most wonderfully successful. When M. Maillefert commenced operations at the Gate, in Augunt last, (late in the season,) but few persons had configence in his success, The plon of blasting under water, by placing the charge on the surface of the rock, (without any drilling,) using the water asa fulcram or resisting medium, was by most persons considered unphi- losopbical; but complete success hes attended this great experiment which he has been enabled to make, and the ficiency of this new method of sub-marine blarting has | been a0 thoroughly demonstrated ss to convinee the most sceptical. During the period he bas been making efforts for the removal of the rooks at the Gate, five lives have been sacrificed on Pot Roek— four persons by the upsetting of boat in passing over it, and one mau by a blow on the breast from the tiller of # vessel, in consequence of the rudder striking the top of the rock while the vessel was pening over it. The discovery of this new mode of blasting rocks under water, withcut drilling. the value of which has been de- monstrated by the removal of one of the most dangerous oks in the world, from the very borders of a whirlpool, is worth millions to commerce, Pct Beck is no longer a terror to navigators—no longer sn obstruction to the navigation of the Gate by any verse] that has used this great thoroughfare for the last twenty years; the whirlpool has ceased its roar, for it no longer exists; and the great charm, in which it has had its home for centuries of time, bas been filled up by the debris of the sub-marine explosions on the rock which created it. We are preparing a detailed report of the operations at the Gate for publication. It will be addressed to Walter R. Jones, Eeq., President of the New York Life Saving Benevolent Association. E.
