Dear 8ir:—It was with mest profound astonishment that I read the communication from Mr. Joreph A. Sco- ville, Inte of the New York Picayune, in your paper of ird faturday last, the 7th inst. At the regular monthly meeting of the Picayune Club, evening, January 19, 1862, it was re- the opinion of the club in regard tothe Picayune, and more exprersly of ite editor, (familiarly known as Mr. Pick,) snd, it being the wish of thousands of his fair readers and tubsoribers to become personally ecquainted with the editor, resolved to give a faucy the comedy cf “ Perfection,” and the elegant favee of dress ballas the best possible means of gratifying that the resolutions advertise e 4th innt , were unanimously passed, | and in compliance therewith I transmitted a copy of | said resolutions, together with ticke’s and special invi- tation, as directed; the receipt of which has been ac- ub thanked, and the invitation oor- dially responded to by a Mr, Pick in the Picayune. Turspay, Feb. 10-6 P. M. ‘There was less activity in the stock market to day. Reading Railroad still takes the lead, but prices remain steady. A comparison of quotations, from week to week, does not ehow much alteration, while the daily fluctuations are merely fractional. At the first board, Erie Railroad declined *{ per cent; Long Island, 14; Harlem, };; Jer- ney Zinc, 1s. Canton Co. advanced 3; per cent; Norwich and Worcester, 14; Hudson River Railroad, %¢; Morris Canal, Delaware and Hudson, 2};; Erie Income, +4; Illinois Interest Stock, 3s. At the second board, Erie Reflroad fell off 3¢ percent. Delaware and Hudson went up 1}< per cent, making the improvement, since yester- doy, 834 percent. There were more sales of this stock to-day than usual, notwithstanding the advance in Prices. There isno doubt that this stock has been too much depreciated, but the advance recently has been too rapid to be permanent. The advance in the marfet value of coal, in consequence of the cold weather, has, deubtlees, been partially the cause of the improvement in price for the stock, asit has increased the assets of the company, but the competition, another season, is likely to be as powerfal as at any time previous, ‘and prices for coal as low as they have been, Sucha severe winter as this has not been experienced for thirty years, and thirty years more may elapse before we shall have another like it. We cannot. therefore, expect, with the rapidly increasing facilities for getting coal to mar- ket, that prices will hereafter rule anything like what bas been realized. The revenue of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company is derived from the sale of coal, not the transportation of it, and it is, consequently, liable to ruinous fluctuations. Its dividends have been steadily running down. Its capital rapidly increasing, without a oorrespording increase in the annual earnings. It may be as good @ stock as it ever was, and ultimately ite divi. dendsas large, but until more evidence of such results exists than we know of now, we cannot but think that the advance of the past two weeks is more speculative than permanent. We, however, may he mistaken in all cur calculations. All other stocks om the list remain about the same. The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port, to-day, amounted to $124,178 73; payments $18,420 08—balance, $3,139,142 69. : There has been an active demand for foreignexchange for remittance by the steamship Niagara, to-morrow— Wednerday—for Liverpool, Drawers generally are frm, at our quotations; and in several instances an advance hasbeen asked. The effeot of this will be seenin the large shipments of specie. The steamer will take out upwards of one million of dollars, The next steamer from this port is the Pacific, on Saturday, the 2lst inst, and the probability is she will take out @ corresponding amount. It looke now as though the aggregate export of precious metals from this port, during the month of February, would be double that for January, The clos- ing quotations, to-day, for bills on London, were 101; 103¢ percent premium; on Paris, Sf, 16'; a 6f.15; Am. sterdam, 41:4 a 413¢; Bremen, 78 a 78);; Hamburg, 867; a 865,. The earnings ofthe Macon and Western Railroad Com- pany for the month of January, amounted to $25,763 20, against $24,108 01 for the samo month last year, showing | an increase of $1,585 19 for the month this year, The Ogdensburg Railroad Company earned in Janu- ary, 1852, $17,578 63; same month in 1951, $9,194 89; in- creare, $8,443 64.
