* mapufactured tobacco, 769 | market with s perfect rush, and are easily made dupes of Itis a long time since we had an exciting time in Wall street, and there is conzider- able anxiety among those who have been carrying fect of certain events. these unproductive, unguaronteed fancy stocks for #0 many months to get rid of them, They think it is time to place them upon other people’s shoulders, and they are about right. Holders of Brie Railroad have been getting rid of their sup. plies, and mew purchasers have appeared in the market. This, for a time. will keep that stock pretty steady. Reading Railroad has changed hands to large lots, and those who have now got hold of it may manage to keep it up alittle while. The other fanores havo not varied much, and therefore the greater the probsbility of @ movement being msde. The banks are vory im- portent auxiliaries in an expansion, aud they must be enlisted in favor of the bull party. They will, doubtless, roon be looking for employment for their sarplus fands, ‘and call loans on good stock securities ure so easily managed that it is a desirable metacd of investing money temporarily in Wall street. All there things will come round in time, and, when properly arewoged and managed, there will be, without doubt, aa iallatien in the market value cf fancy stocks, equal to anything we have known for years, It is about the onty ontlet we can think of for the speculative propensities of @ large class of capitalists, and we have no doubt all the sucplus beans of that claes will be concentrated on the leading faucy eecurities of the day. ‘Phe amount of gold received at the U. 8 Mint, Philadelphia, during the mouih ot January, was. $4,100 000 Receipts at New Orleans, estimate... 540,000 Total receipts. Janvary. 1462. , $4,600,000 Exports from New York and Boston. 3.20 800 Excess of receipts over shipwents .... $1,400,000 This does not include the amount recvived by the Pro metheus and Oherokee, at this port, trom Chagees and Panema. Theee cteamers brought ono million two hundred thousand dotiars in gold dust, which, added to the above, makes a totsl surplus of two miilloas six hundred thousand dollars, edjed to our supply o precious metais during the month of January. In the month of January, 1851, the importation of gold duac into this port from California, amounted to $2,890,903 During the mouth this year, the receipts have bero about four millions of doliars. ‘ais ise good beginning, and we trust it will coutigue at this rate throughout. ‘The attention of ali classes is as much turned to Ualifor, nia now as ever, and crlculations upon large mouthly receipts of gold dust from San ¥rancisco are made with the greatest confidence, Thus ter the most saoguine anticipations have been formed, and the prospeot is de- cidedly faverabie, for regular rezittaaces equal to any yet recebved. The quantity of coal rent to market by Reading Rail- Toad during the week ending the 29:h uit., was 17,879 tone; total tince December 1, 160.145 tons; same time previous year, 260,619 tons. The e. vere weather has undoubtedly restricted operations in the mining regions and on the railroad very materially. An important decision was made on Saturday last by Judge Koosevelt, in the Supreme Court. In asuit brought to test the validity of the late subscriptions made for the stock of the Canada Great Western Railroad by some of the raiirsad companies of this State, he decides that the coneent of two-thirds of the stockholders is not sufficient to authorize such subscription, The consent of all the stockholders must be obtained to make such subscription valid. The Grand Jury of Passsic county, New Jersey, have returned three bills of indictment against M1. C. Stimson, late Cashier of the Peoples’ Bank of Paterson, They also made a presentment against the directors of that institution for “gross and culpable neglect of duty.’ According to this presentment, five of the directors never saw the charter, and most of them never examined the books, and were merely nominal managers, not being bona fide stockholders, but they simply held single shares, transferred to them to make them eligible. ‘The annexed statement exhibits the quantity of cer- tain articles exported from this port during the week ending the 31st of January, distinguishing the destina- tion and extent of shipments to each place:— Commence oy THE Port or New York—Weexry Exrorrs. The ship- monte of epeeie Intely have been «matt rte 281 for the corresponding month im 1851. This shows an inerease of $1,682,677, compared with the closing month of 1851, There has lately been a great decrease in ex” ports, In December, 1851, $5,665,965 in specie was shipped; in November, $5,033,355. If the shipments go on increasing this year, from month to month, aw they did last, the aggregate will be very large; but there are no indications of such a result. We can judge pretty well of the import trade of the country at lerge from the returns of the Custom House of this port, but we can- not arrive at such correct conclusions relative to our expert trade. Neurly three quarters of the imports into the United States are entered at this port, while only about one-third of the exports are cleared from this port. The balance of trade for or against the country at large, is invariably liquidated here. If shipments of epecie are required, it goes out in steamers from the port of New York. If specie is sent to the United States from apy foreign country, it arrives at this port; and: us movements of the precious metals hava always been more or less @ bugoear, the effect. faverably or uofavor ably, ie first felt in this market, and spreads throughout the money markets of the Union. a NE NS | “BOARDING AND LODGING. 4; outons, | ay | In January, the amount exported wae f2,848,058, agninet #1,25¢- | NY RESKWES KVRGY DAT. Faannronr, Ky,, Jan, 24, 1852, Severity of the Weather-—Adjournment of the Legislature-— Proposed Removal of the Public Buildings to Lowisville— Magnificent Church Edifice—Mismanagement of Louisville and Frankfort Ra.boud. ‘The weather, for the past few days, has been intensely cold. On Monday, the mercury, nt 10 A. M., was 14 deg. below zero; and, on Tuesday, at on early hour, the ther- mometer was 22 degrees below. The winter of 1795 hae been noted as the severest winter Kentucky ever expe- rienced; but the weather, for the Inst few days, has been. much colder than the famous December of that year. ‘The enow of Sunday fell to the depth of two feet, afford- ing exoellent sleighing, but preventing the progress of the cars on the Louisville and Lexington Railroad. Such deep snows are unusual in this latitude, Snow fell to considerable depth in thin section in the winter of 1832 ; but, for nearly twenty years, tbo snow has but barely covered the ground. The Kentucky river is tightly closed, and the Ohio, from Louisville to Jeffersonville, Indians, is an icy bridge, and crowded with pedestrians, The Legi.lature has adjourned, and Frankfort is as quiet and dull as usual. It is somewhat strange that Kentuckians should bave pitched upon Frankfort for the seat of government, It is, to bo sure, prettily located, but very inconvenient of access The population is tearcely two thousand, and the inhabitants are very far from being enterprising. The place can boast of buttwo hotels, and neither of these pretend to have superior ac- commodations for mam or besst. We dia hope that the last Legislature would have, by astrong vote, moved the seat of government to Louiviile, where it ought to have oern trom the commencement. It will cost the peovle nothing to make the change, for Louisvilie has promised to erect buildings at her own cost. Bot. Frankfort, with all its faults, has nome redeeming qualities, ‘The publio buildings are, for the most part, of tasty design. and of ornament to the city.
