Prices remain without material aiteration, Speculation has died away, and 6 revival will be more difficult a second time than the iirst. The leading railroad stocks have been very weak for the pasttwo or three days, and holders have Yeen trying to put them off without depressing prices much. They have succ*eded much better than we anti- cipated. Reading and Erie, since the dividend, have been freely offered, and have been steadily settling down ip prices. This shows the eflect of declaring and paying dividends never earned, It shows that shrewd holders exert themselves to get rid of a stock, the momenta dividend not earned has been paid. When the four per cent dividend on Erie was announced, the stock was felling st 87 per cent—dividend off would nave reduced the price to 83, Sales were made to-day at 777{, show- ing @ decline of 6'; per cent. When the three anda balf per cent dividend on Reading Reilroad was Geciared, the market price of the stock was 6l—diri- dend off would have reduced it to 6734. Sales were made to-day at 6614, @ decline of 1}; per cent. The eame thing occurred in Norwich and Worcester, and the same result will be realized in any and every doubtful stock. It is impossible to make sensible, shrewd people believe that these railroad companies earn the dividends they declare; but there are enough who have the most perfect confidence in all statements and reports emanat- ing {rem rafiroad managers and directors, to take off the Bande of the moze cautious all the stock they wish to dirpove of. Those who had sold Erie or Readieg Rail- read, dividend on, would have made a good move; and ifcur advice had been more generally taken, a large por- tion cf the sheres on the market would have changed hands, Asa general thing, it is best to apll fancy stocks dividend op. The various companies paid into the Treasury of the State, for inte- yest and dividends, in 1847, $189,083 46 ; in 1849, 6: 783 21; in 1949, $201,169 77; in 1860, $213,090 30; in ‘1854, $254,015 77. The financial operations of the Trea- sury Department since 1845, have been of tha most fuyo- rable and satisfactory character. ( m the Ist of Dezem- ber, 1846, the report of the Treasurer exhibited the Brati- fying fact that, in the year then ended, $792,259 had been paid out, being $76,868 83 over and above the emount of one year’s interest on the principal debi; and leaving in the Treasury @ surplus of $147,013 41.
