‘There was more buoyant feeling in the market to- day, with rather limited transactions. Mest of the opera- tions were for cash. Reading Railroad was the most setive fancy in the list. Prices generally improved on the opening rates, and at the close the tendency was up- ward. Holders of Erie Bailroad stock do not like the new financial operations of the company. It is proposed to issue three and e half millions ofconvertible bonds, bear- ing seven per cent interest, for the liquidation of the floating debt, whieb, at present, amounts to about three ‘millions of dollars. It is also proposed to sell these bonds at duction. It is impossible to tell what these bonds ‘would bring if put allat once on the market, but it is our opinion that they will not sell for more than eighty. five per cent, and perhaps less, The last issue of bonds ‘was represented as being sufficient to pay off the floating debt, complete and equip the road, and place the financial affairs of the company in an ¢asy condition. ‘Two years have not elapsed, and we have another issue of bonds, amounting to three and « half millfons of dollars, ‘announced, and not an additional mile of road has been eonstructed. The bonded debt of the Erie road, after the new issue is made, will amount to $18,000,000, as for out of the income; but itis easy enough to pay any rate of dividend, when credit is good and « convenient construction account covers up the item of expenditure. We should not have been surprised had the direotion de- elared six per cent instead of four, for the past six months. Nothing astonishes us, in the way of Wall street financiering. ‘The variations in quotations to-day were quite mode- rate. At the first board, Reading Railroad advanced 34 percent; Hudson River Railroad, }(; Harlem Railroad, 34. There was no new feature in the market, and there ie no indication of any important change one way or the other, at present. ‘The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port, to-day, amounted to $122,411 17; payments, $565,357 77—Ddalance, $2,191,587 16. ‘The steamship Canada, at Halifax, from Liverpool, brings three days’ later intelligence from all parts of Europe. The news politically is interesting; commercial- ly, it does mot amount to much. There had been no change in the principal markets, either as regards prices ordemand. Our leading staples are dull and much de- pressed. Advices from France are important, as they show a tranguil state of affairs. Tat is a great deal for @ place like Paris. The effect upon financial and com- mercial matters had not been favorable, generally. In some instances s return of confidence was visible; but the public mind had been so much excited that it will take some time to ailay it to an extent suflicient to give activity again to the movements of commerce. A dividend of three dollars a thousand has been made by the Tradesmen’s Bank. The Seventh Ward Bank an- mounces # dividend of 43¢ per cent, for the last half year, payable 2d January. The United States Fire Insurance Company has declared a semi-annual dividend of ten per cent, payable on the 2d January. A bill is before the Legislature of Kentucky to author- ize free banking in that State. It authorizes the forma- tion of companies of not less than five persons, who have subscribed for stock, amounting in the aggregate to not Jess than one hundred thousand dollars, upon the de- posite with the State Treasurer of Btate stocks, or stocks of inorporated railroad companies. which are paying six per cent dividends; and he is empowered to issue a cer- tificate authorizing such company to issue bills, or notes, for sixty or sixty-five per cent upon such deposit, and to circulate the same; the company having all the usual privileges of the banks of the State, of dealing inex- ADVERTISEMENTS BENEWED KVERY DAY. aoa PERSONAL. Mr. Van Buren then suggested that tate wpete bes convenient time to discuss the question as to the ad- mirsibility of the testimony of Mr. Lester, and eumilar evidence which he would offer by other witmeases. Chief Justice— What is the evidence you offer? Mr. Van Buren. Evidence of improper and lew@ conduet on the part of Mrs Forrest, with men not charge@ with adultery in this case.
