We have nothing of importance to report in the stock market. Prices are unsettled, and ime very feverish con- dition. Notwithstanding the complexion of the political end commercial intelligence by the Baltic, a feeling of distrust and apprebension exists, caloulated to increase and strepgthen the depression in the stock market. It was the impression in London, previous to the departure Of the last packet, that the great and rapid advance in quotations for French securities was the effect of pur- chases made purposely for such result—that it was not caused by the return of confidence. This being the gene- ral impression, @ reaction was anticipated, and financial ciroles were in a bigh etate of excitement, The steam- ship Canada left Liverpool on the 13th inst., and we may have ber news any moment, over the'wires from Halifax. She will bring three days later news, and it may be im- portant, It will be a long time before public affairs get settled down im Europe. We doubt if there will be, during the existence of the present generation, any per- ‘manency in political mattersin the Old World, Moneyed men, business men, the manufacturing and mechanical classes, are all anxiously looking for peace and quiet, without much prospect of realising their wishes. It is ruinous to every branch of industry, to be kept in con- tinual alarm. his has been realized to such an extent that a large amount of capital is about being withdrawn from employment in Europe, and invested in this coun- try. Previous to the coup d’etat of Lous Napoleon, such was the intention of many parties, sccording to the London Times; and since, we have no doubt the feeling has extended, and the transfer within the next twelve months willreach a large amount. A comparison of the steady course of public affairs in the United States with the turbulent, uncertain, unsafe state of things through- out Europe, must have a great influence upon the minds of capitalists, who are proverbially timid, and easily alarmed. This fecling will som operate more powerfally upen the movements of that important class, and the time is not far distant when we shall see our prosperity strengthened and consolidated by the withdrawal of capi- tal andssill from Europe, such as, up to this time, never has been realized. Revolutions in Burope never have been particularly injurious to our local interests. Great Britain has in- variably been the greatest sufferer. The people of the continent have heretofore been largely indebted to England, im the way of trade, and whatever occurred to weaken their ability to pay, of course proved more or less detrimental to British financial and commer- cial interests. We have never yet been in that po- sition. We have heretofore been debtors, instead of creditors, of European nations, and, as we have always intended to, and have ever been able to, pay our debte, it made very little difference to us, as far as that was concerned, how frequent cr how protracted political re- volutions became, It is the change in our position that will change the operation of these movements. In the course of time, we shall become the financial regulators of the world. New York will be, what London is, the great centre, around which all the commercia) transac- tions of all nations will revolve. It will be to the world what it is now to the United States, andwe shall be as much affected by any political revolution or commercial revulsion in any part of the universal giobe, as we are now by any disaster in any part of this country. We shall then be more sensitive, more anxious relative to every public event at home and abroad, and it would be ‘well for us if the age of revolutions passes away before that. The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port, to-day, amounted to $56,102 65; payments, $13,896 88—balance, $2,634,633 76, Tee steamphip Niagara, from Boston for Liverpool, to- day, carried out two hundred and seventy: five thousand dollars in American gold. The packet ship 8. M. Fox, for Havre, carried out one hundred and five thousand dollars in specie. The variations in quotations for stocks, to-day, do not amount tomuch. At the first beard, Canton advanced 34 per cent; Norwich and Worcester, 34; Harlem, +; Erie Railread, }¢. New Haven Railroad declined +4 per cent, At the second board, Erie Railroad fell off 1; per cent. There were large transactions in Reading, but the other fancies were rather inactive, and the market closed weak. The Liverpool cotton market Was, at the last accounts, improving, after the depression of the previous month ortwo, Whether this advance will be sustained or not, is @ question of considerable importance and much doubt. The manufacturing interests were in a prosper- ous condition, but much depends upon the position of things on the Continent. Peace and quiet will give the manufacturing classes of Great Britain employment, and markets fog their fabrics; while agitation and revolution will seriously reduce the consumption, and of course re- duce the demand. ‘The bids for the canal revenue certificates, amounting to $600,000, were opened by the Comptroller, at Albany, yesterday afternoon, in the presence of the State officers and a number of capitalists.
