NEWS BY TELEGRAPH. THIRTY-SHOOND CONGRESS. FIRST SESSION. House of Representatives. Wasninoron, Deo. 6, 1851, ‘Mr. Baiccs gave notice of his intention to invroduce a Dill establishing e mint in New York. ‘The Breaxen laid before the Hoyse the Superintendent of QCoast Surveys’ report, A debate arose as to printing 10,000 extra copies, and the subject was then refurred to the Printing Committee. ‘There being no general disposition for business, the House adjourned till Tuesday, whem the various com- mittees will be announced. From Washington City. SPECIAL CORRESPONDENCE OF THE NEW YORK HERALD. NEW SENATOR FROM MISSISSIPPI—THE SENATE'S OVFICERS—DIFFICULTY IN SELECTING STANDING COMMITTEES FOR THE HOUSE—SERIOUS ILLNESS OF MR. CLAY—THE COMPROMISE MOVEME \T IN THE — Wasninaton, Dec. 6, 1351. General Fc ote has received « telegraphic despatch from Jackson, Mise., announcing the election of W. L. Harris, secession whig, to the Senate of the United States, for three weeks, till the new Legislature can meet to elect Mr. Adams, a strong Union democrat, for the whole un- expired term of Jefferson Davis. The election of Mr, Harris, by the union of the secession demoorats with the eccersion whigs, shows conclusively the absurdity of the cry raised by the friends of any particular candidate for the Presidency, that the Southern secessionists are Letter democrats than Union men. Humbug! It is, after all, probable that an election of officers may be held in the Benate. Considerable ill-will begins to manifest itself in Com- gress, and there is no little difficulty im the way of ap- pointing the standing committees of the House. Mr. Boyd has not as yet consulted with any of the prominen democrats who were spoken of as candidates for Speaker, and voted forin caucus. Judge Bayly. of Va., being sent for to-dey, has declined accepting the chairmanship of the Committee of Ways and Means. This is unfortunate, and will embarrass Mr. Boyd. After the committees shall have been announced, there: will be some requests to be exeused from serving. The chief object aimed at by Mr. Boyd seems to be a cheap administration of the govern- ment, and his committee, will be organized with « view to that end. Mr. Clay continues ill, and has been spitting blood se- veral times. A great deal ef anxiety begins to be felt for nthe Compromise resolution will be offered in the House by Mr. Freemau, compromise democra’, from Mississippi, and seconded and supported by Mr. Inger- *oll, « promising compromise democrat. from Connec- ticut. Mr. Seymour, of the same State, is equally ready 20 support them; sois Mr. Thursten, of Bhode Island; and ramor ssys Mr. Rantoul, (doubtful,) though he is willing to make any promise to be appointed chairman of the Committee on Commerce. OXENSTIERNA. The State Canvassers—The Canal tracts, Axsany, Dee. @, 1881, ‘The State Canvassers had « meeting to-day, but no re- sult hae been declared, The engineers are still engaged in overhauling the Canal contract proposals. During the coming week their labor will be completed, and the board will declare who are to have contracts for work. A large number of contractors are awaiting the fate of their proposals. Fire at Ithaca. Ivuaca, Dec. 6, 1851. A fire broke cut here, last night, in a carpenter’s shop, which, with its contents, a large quantity of lumber and 800 cords of hemleck bark, were entirely consumed The loss is about $1,300. The property was partly in- suredin the Hartford company. Con, Union Mayor Elected Cnaneston, Dec, 5, 1851. ‘The Union men of Savannah have elected their candi- date for Mayor. Senator Butler, of Benth Carolina, left Colambia, on ‘Tuesday, for Washington. From Salt Lake—Indian War, &c. Br. Lovis, Deo. 6, 1861. ‘The Balt Lake mail reached Independence on the 4th instant. It had been much impeded by snow, which was fifteen inches deep on the plains. “The news from the Mormon country is unimportant. ‘The Indians, near Fort Kearney, were very trouble- some. The Cheyennes and the Pawnees are at war with each other. Forger Arrested. Lousvinte, Deo. 6, 185). Bamuel R. Page was arrested this evening for uttering $1,400 ccunterfelt money. The money consisted of $100 notes on the Northern Bank of Kentucky. Arrival of the Sloop of War Jamestown Pauraverra, Deo. 6, 1851. Advices from Rio Janeiro to Oct. 22, report the sloop. On one end there is a most perfect medallion ikeness of Jenny Lind, and on the other, one of P. T tarmum, the President of the Bank. These likenesses neve been cut from the bille—in some instances destroy- ng nearly one third of them—and the bank, therefore, efuses to redeem all mutilated notes, except in propor. on to the amount returned. The Diario de la Marine publishes « statement of be value of the trade of Cuba for the past year, from which it appears that the importations reached he sum of $25,983,227, and the exportations $25,631,018, aaking the total amounte over fifty-four millions of dol- are, The importations of 1850 exceeded those of 1849 by 0 per cent, and the exportations by 14 per cent. The crease of trade with the United States in one year has reen over two millions of doVars. In 1849 the total value f the trade with the United States was $1279,552; in 560, $15,012,618. The United States now, for the first ime, take precedence of every other country having in- -roourse with the Island of Cuba. This is accounted for by the set, that there were large deposits of California dust in be mint in November and December, of 1860, the colnag f which was carried into this year's accounty. Of the coinage, all but about five hun- red thousand dollars was of gold. The bulk of the gold coinage has been in double eagles. The coin may be ery useful for shipment, but it is mot of much use in the peretions of commerce. Eagles and half eagles are more vetirable coins. The capacity of the mint appears very creat, im consequence of the coinage of such large pieces, hereas, bad the coinage been of smaller denominations, would have been seen that the total coinage for the reat would have been comparatively limited. This coin gives greater facilities for shipment than would otherwise exist, and the exportation is, no doubt, larger on that account. This large coin is (melted up in England and recoined, so that noth- ing ie gained by devoting so much of the time of epera- tors in the mint to this branch of coinage, If the man- egers with to show Congress bow much coining oan be done in a month, they would for a single month turn out nothing elee but double eagles. By #0 doing, they might show such an immenre capacity, as to put down most effectually every attempt to establish a mint in the city of New York.
