WELCOME TO KOSSUTH, Whe Preparations for the Reception of the Great Hungarian, ‘THE EXCITEMENT AND PREPARATIONS ON BIATEN ISLAND. Staten Isianp, Deo. 4, Noon. ‘There is no appearance of the Humboldt as yet. Ma- Jor Hagedorn and hie staff continue under arms, wait- tig for the arrival of Kossuth. The greatest anxiety ‘was manifested on the island all day Wednesday, yester- day, ond last night, for the appearance of the steamer, and there were numerous false alarms which ect the Islanders agog., Spy glacres are in requisition, and there ‘ise constant lookout: ‘The guns of Fort Hamiltou will salute Kossuth as he ‘eaters the Narrows. Of the thirty-five Hungarians who came over to Sta- ten Island to welcome their chief on his arrival to our ehores, s part returned in the course of the afternoon, while others remained and spent the evening of Wed- mesday at Dr. Doane’s private residence, till half-past 11 o'clock, when they retired to Dr. Brueninghausen’s for the night. ‘There is the grestest jealousy between the city autho- ities of New York and the Staten Islanders, about Kos- euth. The New Yorkers think the Staten Islanders are amaking quite too much of the affair, and that they will Bave so much of the first of the illustrious Magyar, that the gilding will be taken off the gingerbread of New ‘York. On the other hand, the Staten Islanders are alarmed lest there should be some conspiracy to carry off Roesuth to New York, before they have time to give him an ovation. On the news of his arrival, the Mayor and the Commit- tee of Arrangements of the Common Council, together with General Sandford will come down here to have a private interview with Kossuth Colonel Berzoenzey anda number of the distinguish- ed Hungarians, who have been staying at the Irving House, are on the island from New York. Welearn that ‘the Committee cf Arrangements of the Common Council, very wroth, have charged the Colonel to induce Kossuth mot to say asyllable on the island—not to reevive any @ddresses, until he goes to New York, and gets a public Teception. The New York committee think it is shock. ing conduct on the part of the people of Richmond eoun- ty, and the committee oa the Island, in alliance, we euppose, with Governor Davis of Coney Island, think it 4s exceedingly selfish and tyrannical on the part of the New Yorkers to attempt to interfere between them and Kossuth. How the metter will now be decided is a prob fem til the hero bimsei! srmives. Itis said that Major ‘Hagedorn and his mep © |!) and defend him to the Iast against the aggressions amd assumptions of the Common Council of New \ or It isto be hoped Kos- suth will not be “ killed with kindness” between the con- tending partics. Our special reporters at Staten Island have sent us the following despatch :— OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENCE. States Lvann, Decemnen 4—43, D'Clock, P.M. } Mejor Hagedorn, accompanied by his staff, waited on ‘Col. Berzenezey, Col. At 8 o'clock, the whole party of Hungarians were in- vited by Dr. Brueninghausen to « cold collation at his house; it being understood that the majority of the party ‘would return to the city in the 4 o’elock beat, and that they could not wait for dinner. A very elegant enter- tainment was served up and about thirty persons partook of it, most of them officers. and very fine looking men. “They were nearly all dresed in theiruniforms The host, Dr. Brueninghauren. is the doctor of Major Hagadorn’s comps, and arrived here two or three years ago, He served ‘ander Generals Bem and Dembinski, and was captured dy the Kuseians at the siege of Warsaw. Toe American people ard the liumgarians were brethers io the great family of mau, snd if they difered in some sen- Simeats, their hearts were the same. Thetr feelings were ddentical. Immediately underneath the figure of Kossuth is a Turkish soldier, with a drawn sword, and in the back ground the British lion, the whole surmounted by the flags of Hungary, the United Btates, and England.
