M The stock market ppened heavy this morning. This has been « sort of blue Monday in the street, and prices have slightly depreciated At the first board nearly every fancy in the list declined. Harlem fell off % per cent; Erie Ratiroad, 4; Reading, \; Norwich and Wor- corte, Stonington, ,; Canton Company, j. The bears have taken advanlage of the dull feeling to-day, end bought in reversal of theirshorts, We leok for dull times shortly after every holiday, and we shall not hi much activity inthe market before the middle of next week. Nearly all the emall stocks have been neglected lately, but holders bave not forced them out. They are all well held, and it is our impression that they will pay @ better profit on the amount invested in them than avy Of the larger clase of securities, Meading Railroad ha, jstely been run up repidly. ‘The advance within the past two weeks has been about five per cent. The movement originated in Philadelphia, with a clique of speculators, the be: f which is # broken down operator well known in thie market. @he party alluded to has drawn men of large capital into the operation, upon sufficient tecnriety against lore ro as to give the public the impres- sion that purchases are made for permanent invest. ment. The effect of this bas been favorable for holder in thie market and Borton, as it has enabled them to get rid of their stook at better prices. The Reading Railroad Company have done a large business the past year, and if the eapital was only toa moderate amount, or no more thon what « road can now be built for, «ay ex millions of oilers, Ipetend of eighteen mi n @ Would be chance of the stockholders wetting retarne for fo. veetment rest on the cost of the road new ope i ire nett > printe a certain ually, 1 rtain if: Sebtedners, keeps them in the market as borrowers thie | Woes not look much like paying a dividend. In the face of these facts we see the market price of the stock steadi- ly advancing. This only shows how little speculators ac- tually know about the stocks they daily deal in. It is» game of chance, and they go it blind. Erie Railroad holds its own wonderfuly.. The bulls have a hard time of it. The stock is steadily accumulating im the street, and eciusybody must have & pretty big load to carry by and by. Harlem fluctuates strangely. It is down to- day, with saies of only afew shares If large earning, ‘and briiiant prospects have any influence upon the market value of a stock, we knew of none that should advance co rapidly as Harlem. The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port, to-day, amounted to $62,070 96; payments, $4,950 71; balance, $3,316,460 90. ‘The shareholders of the Bank of the United States, ebartered in 179], or their legal representatives, wno desire to participate in the final dividend of tne Stock- holders’ Trust, expected to be made under @ deeree of the courts of the United States, finally to close the affairs of that institution, are notified and requested to make known that desire to the cashier, by letters, post paid, addressed to him, at the office of the Trust, in the Girard Bank, Philadelphia, on of before the 23d of Becember, 1861, at 4 P. M., when the final meeting before the Master will be held, that their participation in the final dividend of said assets may be seeured. We understand that the committee appointed’ at the late meeting of the friends of the air line railroad, to solicit subscriptions, are in the city. The capital stock is $1,0€0,000, one half of, which has been provided for by Eastern capitalists, one quarter by the citizens of Middletown, leaving but one quarter for all other places. ‘There is no doubt but this will at once be filled up. The cost of this lime is estimated, by competent engineers, at two million five hundred thousand dollars, to connect with the Bostom and Providence road, or three millions of dollars, with s separate road into Boston. The. com- pany’s line would then extend from New Haven to Bos. ton, ® distance of one hundred abd ten miles, for the moderate cost of three millions of dollars. The railroad line to Boston, from New Haven vis Hartford and Springfield, eost more than twelve millions of dollars, showing a difference in favor of the air line of nine millions of dollars. If the Central lice cam earn dividends ranging from six to ten per cent om such # large capital, it can easily be cal- culated what a dividend could be earned by the air line, on a capital only one quarter as large. This project is in proper hands. The road will be built. There is no more doubt of it than that the sun will rise to-morrow. The spirit with which the people along the line have taken held of the matter, is # sufficient guarantee of success. The route brings the two cities, New York and Boston, about thirty miles nearer each otner than by any line now im operation. There is an immense amount of lecal travel throughout the section of country the road will pass through—inmumerable manufacturing establishments, which will give large quantities of local freighting, and as a through route, between the two cities, it must take precedence of all ot hers. ‘The annexed statement exhibits the value of foreign dry goods entered at this port for consumption, for ware- housing, and withdrawn from warehouse, during the week ending om the 28th inst:— MOVEMENTS IN FOREIGN DRY GOODS, CONSUMPTION.
