Whe Election—T"2 Popular Vote-~-The House~The Senate—Futwe Elections— The Constitutiraal 1 Convention—The Webster Meting, The political agony is over, and we are all safs. “The bear is dead, and the harmonious order of nature goes on as smoothly as ever, just as if the @reat mother cared not a straw ubout the politics -of her children, but was propared to nourisa them all With equal kindness. But though we aro all safe sand souud, it is, as yet, qvite impossible to say ‘whother the whigs or the coalitionists will eventu- ally triumph. That the former have been tremen- dousty beaten in the popular rote, no one can very well doubt; aud their dofeatis the moro mortifying because of their confidence, even up to so late aa Monday evening, that Mr. Winthrop would be chosen by the people, to their own great glory, and “the great confusion of the coalitioniets. But what saved the whigs for years, may now restoro them to power—the legislative elections —the control of Bos- ton, with forty-four reprogentatives, giving them a most formidable advantage. As the House now stands, the whigs have a majority, as thoy say, of 27, while their opponents say it is but ll. On the 2th of November, elections will be held to fill the vacanc'es in the House, upwards of a hundred of which now exist. These vacancies, the coalition- ists, if united, can fill three to oneagainst the-whigs; ‘if partially united, probably two to ono. It all do- pends upon the degree of union that can be effected in the towns yet to choose, between the freo-soilers and democrats. Should there be no union worthy of the name, the whigs must return to power; for even if wo put their ont majority at only 11, it cannot be overcome by a clearly divided enemy. ‘The condition of the coalition’s success is, that it ebail be @ coalition in fact, as well as in name. ‘The coalition carried five of their can peo some accounts say eight—in Lewell ; but in o. quence of a clerical error, made by a whig, the election in that city has been declared void by the Meyor and Aldermen, aud @ new trial will bo bad on the 24th. It is by no means improbable that this matter may lead to very gravo results, and strongly test the good sense of our citizens. A vo- teran member of the House, who has seen election Dattles fought there, tells me that that body has, in almost every instance, refused to be governed by mere technicalities in making i's decisions, but has regarded the interost of the majority of the voters. According to this, the cvalitionists elected in Jowell, it should seem, are entitled to the places which they claim. Perhaps some five-and- twenty representatives were defeated by the hunk- ers. ‘Any relienco that is made upon their voting for coalition representatives, on the 24th, will tarm out to be folly indeed. ‘ney will be much more likely to vote for whigs. They have already allow- ed tho whigs to cleet a member in Braintree, which last year chose a hunker democrat.
