SUNDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 12, 1851. NEWS BY TELEGRAPH, eens From Weshington City, ‘THE ANTICIPATED ARRIVAL OF KOSSUTH—SECRETARY ‘WEBSTER—THE ALLEGED REVENUE FRAUDS IN NEW YORK—THE INVASION OF MBXICO—ISSUE OF UNITED STATES STOCK—NARROW ESCAPE OF A RAILROAD TRAIN FROM TOTAL DESTRUCTION—LET- TER FROM THE LATE COL. W. L. CRITTENDEN, ETC. Wasninorton, October 11, 1861. The Navy Department has not been officially informed of the eailing of ihe Mississippi with her distinguished Hungarian passenger, although, of course, there is no doubt asto the fact. The necessary orders have been given to the several ships and garrisons to salute Kos- suth on his landing. As Congress has already signified its desire to treat him as the guest of the country, the President will, doubtless, extend to him all proper cour” tesy. No appropriation, however, has been made for this purpose. Mr Webster has written that if the public interest re- quires it, he will return to Washington at any moment— otherwise he will not be here till the 20th instant. Bhould the French Commissioner arrive sooner, however, it will hasten his movements, ‘The Treasury Department has as yet received no official account whatever of the frauds alleged to have been com- mitted on the revenue in New York. This is a strong reason for supposing that the published accounts must " | be greatly exaggerated. The issue of stoek on foreign account during the past fortnight, has been very limited. A large amount of etock in the hands of fcreign insurance associations, has been transferred in trust to the Comptroller of the State | of New York, in conformity with the recent law as to | the security of foreign companies doing business in the State. By a failure to cut loose the cars at Susquehanna last night, a whole train came near being run over the top of the ferry boat into the river. A negro man saved the passengers by chocking the wheels, The train was stopped with the front part of the mail car hanging over the river. The train was detained upwards of two hours, and after crossing the river the mail-oar was smashed in getting it off boat. Had that car gone over, the whole train would have foUowed in a plunge of twenty-five feet to the water, which is deep and strong. A narrow escape. The Army Medical Board for the examination of assis- | tamt surgeons and candidates for appointment, will convene in New York on the 15th November. The President has issued orders to military comman- ders on the frontier to prevent an invasion of Mexico by | Americencitizens ; but, says the Intellizencer, later ad- vices show that but few are engaged in it. Dr. Kintel has arrived in Washington, and hadan in- terview with the President. ‘The Republic, in connection with some severe strictures upon the course of the American press relative to the Cuban invasion, of this morning. publistes the following | letter from Col. Crittenden to Attorney General Crit- tenden:— Suir of Wan Esrenanza, Aug. 18, 1951. “Dear Uxere—In a few moments some fitty of us will be shot. We came with Lopez. You will do me the jus- tice to believe that my motive was a good one. [ was deceived by Lopez—he, as well ax the public press. as- sured me that the island was in a state of prosparous © volution, Tam commanded to finish writing at once. Your nephew, . L, CRUCEENDEN. Vobasset, Dart, Amesbury, eary Knox, Cohasset, Duroe, de. Golden Grove, Kennegre. It is impossible to estimate the loss of life and the “number of veseels foundered: The Newburyport Herald, of this morning, says that Messrs. Sumner & Swazers, owners of the schooner Traveller, received a despatch from St. John, etating tho their vessel had been towed upto Richabuchto harbor — all bands supposed lost. The Traveller was insured for $1,200 at the Lafayette office. Bight persons wore on board, Five Oshing vessels, of Newberpyort, run aground io and around the bay. About one hundred and fifty vessels from Gloucester and probably twice that number from other towns iu this State, are lost. The uncerteinty attending this ca lamity caures intense anxiety in thourand of families Captains Samuel Wiltcn and Wm. Varana, with Benj Pettingail, agent of the owners, and a Boston agent’ pasecd through Newburyport yesterday, to look after the interests of the parties concerned ia the lost fishing versels, . Burvato, October 11, 1851. ‘Two large barns in this city, filled with oats and hay, were burned down by the act of an incendiary this morning. A half-witted fellow has been arrested on tuspicion of having kindled the fire. Three of our best steamers, the Mayflower, Caspian, and Buckeye, had @ splendid race to Cleveland last night. The Mayflower went in fifteen miautes ahead of the Caspian, and twenty-two minutes ahead of the Buckeye. ‘The weather is fine here, and warm as midsummer, Anniversary of the <Pepneyivanta Anti- Slavery Soctety. acetal, Pa.
