Dear Mother—I should not have written to you from this place, when my means and conveni- ences are so cramped, but should have waited until T could find leisure to give you a narrative of allmy adventures, but that I thought best to relieve your anxiety immediately, and to inform you of my per- fect #1 and most excellent good health. True, | 45) I know of more comfortable situations than the hard | floor of a prison; but taking all things into conside- ration, and instituting a comparison with what | suffered with Lopez in the mountains, [ think [am justified in saying that | am quite comfortable; all events, I am well satisfied. Our own Consul has been singularly neglectful of us, and 1 have no doubt will be rowed up Salt River by the Americans, and doubtless recalled. Do this, and you will be rendering me an especial service. I desire particularly that you will not suf- fer from anxiety on my account, as there is nothing in the world to alarm you further than the prospect of a short imprisonment in the Spanish provinces. Our minister will doubtless procure our speedy re- Jease, and if 1 am blessed with life and strength, I have no doubt I will send the noxt 4th of July with ou in Charleston. After that, he continued for come timo in the service of the Sul- tan, after which, 1847, he went to Paris to see his family. Shortly afterwards, the Hungarian insur- rection commenced, and, true to the instincts of his adventurous disposition, Blumenthal soon found himself in the H ian armies, in which he sory: ed until the do of Comorn terminated the un- equal le. MONKY MAR Weoweapay, Oot. 1-6 P.M. ‘The market opened heavy this morning, and, after the adjournment of the first board, prices became much more depressed. The excitement relative to the non- redemption of uncurrent money, no doubt had a great effect, and was the principal cause of the desline. As soon as it was known that the brokers refased to redeem country mouey of any kind, crowds began to assemble in the street, and holders of bills were anxious to get rid of them at any rate, There are fl sorts of rumors in oir. culation, and the names of half a dozen banks were posted as having failed. It was also reported that the bills of moze thane doren banks had been protested in Albany. What rhe result of all this panic will be, time will determine. The following banks are ail which have actually suspended the redemption of their notes at their agencies; others are reported, but the Gatton for the Famors ‘= Tee ee Bank of New Rochelle, N. Y , secured by United States and New York stocks, and ponds and mortgages. Farmers’ seen ot Mina, Dy ¥., sooured by United States and New York stooks, a1 je and mortgages. James’ Bank, N. Y., seoured United States, New York and Michigan stocks, bond: and mortgages Western Bank, Washington couuty, N. Y., scoured by and United States and New York State stocks, bonds mortgages. There banks have failed to redeem their issues at the agencies ; and they are, therefore, reported as having failed. It ia stated that the bills of more than doxen banks have been protested at Albany by the Metropoli- tan bank. The agencies at Albany offered to give ohesks on New York; but the specie wag demanded, and nothing but specie would be taken. The agents had mo specie, CURRENT. von tux New Yoam | and the protests were made. The country banks feel | has been almost imporsible to make loans on collaterals severely the effect of the course pursued by the Metro- politan Bank, and we fear much difficulty will grow out of it. Our Wall street banks could not long stand such a demand upon them for specie as the Metropolitan Bank makes upon the country banks. We should have more than half a dozen bank failures in Wall street in less than a week, if a demand was made upon the city banks for specYe on their circulation and deposits. If the Me- tropolitan Bank follows up the system adopted, one-half of the banks im the State will be «° *,ed into liquidation. Banks which would bave redeemed every dollar of their issues had they been let alone, or been permitted to do 80, in the old way, will now be compelled to wind up; and in putting their securities onthe market and forcing sales, experience losses, which will fall upon holders of their bills. The Metropolitan Bank can accompllsh all that is necessary by a lees stringent course, particularly in times like these, All the banks, during the depression of confidence, require more or less accommodation from each other, and every effort made to oppress or perse- cute any one or more should be frowned upon by the community at large. No one can, for a moment deny the right of the Metropolitan, or any other bank: to demand of another specie for its promises to pay, bu; all must doubt the policy of so doing under existing circumstances, It would not be advisable to Pay very great shave on these notes. Al- though they are not secured by deposits of United States and New York State focks, the loss on them will not be much. All the suspéuded banks of this State ore worth at least ninety cents on the dollar. Those in the above list secured altogether by United States and New York State stocks, are worth one hundred cents on the dollar, There is no necessity for @ panic, All the excitement will be over ina few days. Those who get frightened and hastily sacrifice their bills, will be the only sufferers. By keeping qujet and cool for a few days the paper currency of our State will be as good as ever, and confidence firmly reinstated. We annex the ciroulation of each of these banks, ac- cording to the latest official returns, It will be seen by this that bill-holders will lose nothing, if they have a lit- tle patience :— Wesrer Baxx, Wasnincton County. Robert J. Walker to Great Britain, is fraught with a vast deal of importance to many of our greatest anc most vital interests ; and we qtust he will accomplish all he has undertaken. His | principal object is the negotiation of about twenty mil- | lions of railroad bonds, issued by the Illinois Centra; Railroad Company. These bonds are secured, not only by the.ordinary mortgage on the whole road, but by | nearly three millions of acres of most fertile land oneach | side of the rosd, which has been given to the company by a special act of Congress, to ensure a speedy construc- tion of the road. ‘These bonds are among the most valu} able in the State of Illinois, and must be before the lapse of many years, worth more than enough to liq uidate the | entire loan now in course of negotiation, The success which has attende’ the Quanctal arrangements made with the bondholders of the State of Iilinois, for securing the payment of interest on the canal bonds by hypo- thecating the canal lands, and the large annual pay- ments made upon the loan negotiated to com- plete the Illinois and Michigyn Canal, must have a favorable influence upon the movements of Mr. Walker, and aid him materially in his negotiations. In relation to the Baltimore money market, the American says :—‘Although the money market continues straightened, there are recent indications which hold out the promise of a gradual retura to a better condition of things. Some of the hanks, we know, are discounting more freely than heretofore, and we believe that all of them will, in due course, be enabled to afford increased facilities to their customers, whose new wants, in the meantime, are being lessened by reason of the general pressure. ‘The committee to whom was referred the valuation by the assessors of the real estate in Kings county, Long Island, have made a report, comparing the vaiuation of 1851 with 1850 :— Vanuror Rat Estate ix Kines County—1850 ayo 1851, | , id Assessors Valua- | jonas amended Increase, | 1851. | | BLRTON'S THEATRE, CHAMBERS STRE ORS open at 7; to begin at i O'clock.
