Jvpex or Tue U. 3. Suraeme Court—Inoon | NEWS sequence of the death of Judge Woodbury, there is a vacancy on’ the bench of the Supreme Court, to be filled by President Fillmore, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate. The Associate Justice to be sppointed for this vacancy, will, of course, be a whig, but we have not as yet heard apy one named as the most likely t» receive the honor. If the choise could properly be made from this State, we presume the Hon. John C Spencer would be named by his friend, the President; par ticularly as he was foolishly rejected by the whigs of the Senate, when he was nominated by John Tyler. That President, therefore, named Judge Nelson, of this State, who was sonfirmad, so that now New York has no claims for a Judge to fill the present vacancy. Judge Woodbury was one of the two Judges appointed by President Polk; the other was Judge Grier. As the appointment belongs to a New England man, we have thought it probable that the Presi- dent might offer it to Hon. Robert C. Winthrop, the late Speaker of the House of Representatives, or, if declined by him, to Hon. Rufus Choate, or Hon. George Ashmun; all these three being eminent lawyere of Massachusetts. Judge M’Lean, of Ohio, is the only whig on the present bench of the Supreme Court; and he was appointed by Gen. Jacksom, in 1829. The other Judges are—Wayne, of Georgia, appointed by Jackson, in 1885; Taney (Chief Justice), by Jack- son, in 1886; Catron, of Tennessee, by Van Buren, in 1887; McKinley, of Alabama, (now of Ken- tucky,) by Van Buren, in 1937; Daniel, of Virgi- nia, by Van Buren, in 1541; The Late Invasion of Cuba, ‘We publish in our columns to-day, a translation, from the Diario dela Marini, one of the official organs of the Spanish government in Havana, of | what to be a summary of events that bap- pened in July and August, in connection with tae Jate invasion of the Island of Cuba, from the time ef the landing of Lopez at Bahia Honda, to that of Ibis capture, on the thirtieth of the lacter moath. as well as an account of the insurrection in the eastern department, where, it will be recollected, the declaration of Cuban independence was repor te have been printed and promulgated. Telegraphic Summary. By our special telegraphic correspondence from Aivany, we learn something of the movements and wire-pultings among the politicians of this Stato, ix xeference to the two State Conventions which are to be held at Syracuse, on the Mch and llth of this month. The understanding at present is, a2 we are informed, that the barnburners will endorse the compromise measur Fug’ Leet due share of the spoils, in case of success ia the No- | ‘vember election ; on the other hand, it is satd the delegates to the whig copvention will go no f\ im making a platform than the legislative caucus did, or the committees who signed the call for the eouvention—that is, they will not touch the com ‘arther Promise measures except in gencral terms, aud | ¢ Jeave & loop-hole for further agitation of tho 5! mite question, in ease it should be deomed advis. ‘This is what we expected, and what we said would all probability be the resalt of both conventions, if eveh should be the cave, the uuived democ wili present good, solid, and constitutional trout to the Seward whigs at the next clection As far as regards the fate of parties, se con ery important, ia a national point Veutions will be of view expecially. Avitval of the Stesmeohip Franklin—Later from Marope. By the arrival of the steamship Franklin, from Havre Cowes, which she loit respectively oa the morning and evening of the twenty-seventh ult., @ bave London dates up to noon of that day, Beer!y five days later Ccctom has advanced one-eighth of a penny on the pound, since the intelligence brought by the America, and the market is very active. The orcps $e Great Britain are in a wos! flourishing coalition, but little inj A serious failure—that of a leng established house in London—bad affected the money market for the moment, bat no loog cou dinued anxiety was anticipated. Th» political news is without mach interest of a spirited kind. Some uaeasiness has been oxcited wt Madrid by the recent mad adventures connected with ‘he attempted revolution in Cuba, and it is stated tbat General Aupic had given the Minis of Foreign Affairs assurances that France would assist Spain in repelling attacks apon the island o1 Queen Isabelia. ‘Ibe proporition made some time ago by -Lustria, to annex ali ber provinces to the (rermanic confede- ration, has met with such a cheek from the European powers, thet the project, it is stated, has boon abaa- doned. is is said that Russia, which seemed ia- clined (o eesist the movement originally, has takea a suber second thought on the subject. France and Eng)ood et (ll maintain that such annexation would | becontrary to the stipulations of the treaty between | the Luropesn powers. Tnoy maintain that the | Preject is Luropean, and not simply a national one. ‘The Evcclevinstionl Titles act seems likely to | Bring aborts good deal of rancor ani polem antagoniem between the Briteh government aud the Catholic portion of Ireland. This is a serioas subject, and if, as is stated, the government should undertake to earry on prosecations in Ireland ageins. thove who defy the operation of the law, there is roason to believe tat serious difficulties may orive in the island. In this case, the dignity ‘of the law is brought into direct conflict with the Re.ish Chureh. In oll other respects the political tranquillity of Great Britain promises to be undisturbed. Axaaxy, Bept. 8-8 o'clock P, M. Maxy of the delegates to the Democratic and Whig gtate Conventions, which are to be held on the tenth | and eleventh of the prerent month, are in this city, «+ rute to Syracuse. Very few from New York have gone farther yet, but it ie expected all the democratic dele- gates now bere will leave to-morrow morning. In the meantime, there is @ very extensive game of wire pulling going om here, particularly among the whigs. | Itw said here that the hunkers will have a decided majority in the Democratic Convention, that the barn- burners will cave in, and that the compromise measures will be fully eadorsed, after @ little sparring. ‘The truth {s,it is ssid the barnburners are so hungry, and so very | ‘apxious for office that they will be glad to capitulate, in order to participate in the spoils of office, in case of suc- cees in the next election. Ex Governor Bouck will be the candidate of the bunk- ers as chairman of the convention, Governor Churen that of the barnburaers; and as there is little doubt that the former will be clected, the com- plesion of the couvention can beatonce seen. It is said | the barnburners have not pressed matters where they _ might have done so, and elected their own delegates, because there is an understanding that, in ease of suc- cess, they will get a good many of the small offires, and | some of the larger ones, Chatdeld is promised the At- torrey Generalebip, and Stanton is meutioned as Secre- tary of State. Thus the game stands at this moment, according to all accounts—the hunkers having the game in their own bands, but making concessions to the barn- burners, in the shape of offices, for the purpose of har- | monizing the two factions. On the other side of the houre, I learn that the silver grays are nowkere; that the Seward whigs are going to Dave everything their own way, and that they are tri- umphant everywhere in electing delegates except in the city of New York. The silver grays will have scarcely balf dozen votes, The same cautious and compromis- ing policy thet will be adopted by the bunkors, will be pursued by the abolition whips.
