in of made ves,” and had reached the twenty-fifth representati: f Pelee run ‘unprecedented in thentrleal pate other items of foreign dramatic -and mausical ence, not already notices tt is said that the twenty-four Spanish dancers have been engaged to appear in the Royal Amphithe at Liverpool, where Mr. Vandenboff and his dau hater Poolpaper Sagem ign and gion au per says :— jus ulius Cassar’ Rave Ween ot ced ; “and, os Mr. Vandenhoff’s style of acting, and careful and impressive elocu- tion, are euler suited to the adequate perform- ance of ‘amas, his Virginius Brutus are almost faultless impersonations of these two “‘noble Romans.” Miss Vandenhoff has also ap- ared once more, in “Ingomar,” with increased ef- et; and last night she appeared for the benefit of h er father, in “ Richelieu,” the beneficiary sustain- ing the character of the wily cardinal with bis usual talent. Mr. Charles Dickens, and his corps of literary and artistic amateurs, are expected to give a per- formance of Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton’s comedy, “Not as Bad as We Seem,” at Manchester, in the course of a fortnight, for the benefit of the “Guild of Literature and Art.” CATHARINE HAYES. song What gold could never hac —fnisn Meropy The near approach of this gifted lady’s depar- ture for America catls upon us for a few words res pecting her—not to herald her arrival or to antici pate her success—but to state, honestly and fairly the grounds upon which she is fully enti#ied to th utmost quantity she can receive. Catharine Hayes is a native of the Emerall Isle, where she is generally termed “the Swan of Erin,” but whether in deference to her musical po sition, or in contradistinction to her oaly rival, Jenny Lind, termed “che Swedish Nightingale,” it is not at all necessary to inquire. Ireland, which is one wide realm of song and ro- mance, which has furnished the world with moro melody than all the rest of that world put toge- ther, and from whose shores one would fain believe that nothing but music could issue, has sent forth its bards and its composers, and its minstrels of every grade, excepting that all-important one, a prona donna assoluta, and it would seem that euch very just reproach haa at gs beea removed by the appearance of Catharine Hayes. This in- teresting lady is a native of Limerick; and hor good conduct and great talent having obtained for ner the peaeienes of the late Bishop thereof, she became, through such influence, a pupil of Signor Sapio, in Dublin, and subsequently of Emmanuel Varcia, in Paris, and of Felice Ronconi, in Milan. it was therefore utterly impossible thas genius of her high order could do otherwise than reach a full degree of perfection under such tuition; and thus we find that, after going through the ordeal of three years’ practice in Ireland, from her debut in 1841 until October, 1844, she s:arted for the con- tinert in that month. Is is unnecessary to follow thie artiste through her varied career in every part of italy, from 1844 to 1819—but it is only an act of Justice'to read that, in the theatre of every State she visited, she left behindan indelible recollection of her commanding powers. Catharine Hayes made her début at Covent arden Theatre, in April, 1849, and confirmed with us the impression she inade upon others. Nor must it be forgotten that she created this excitement when the public mind had by no means recovered from the extraordinary frenzy it had been thrown into by the appearance of Jenny Lind—a degree of furore still more mani- festly indulged in by the Americans, amongst whom our fair countrywoman will have to encounter the same degree of comparison. ‘We profess to be upholders of tajent wherever we find it, but we are not blind worshippers, and while we are willing to accord to the Swedisa song- stress the utmost degree of honest eulogy, we can- pot acknowledge ourselves to be amoagst those enthusiasts who coursed her chariot-wheels the other side of the Atlantic. This is not a just patron- age, @ fair appreciation of artistic talent, buts blind homage to the excitement of the dav. It isa false success we do Zyy wish Catharing Hayes to | meet with. No, we desire that sho should make a | fortune, (which she will be sure to do,) and tha! such fortune shall solely be the result of strong judgment, fair criticism, and pure taste. ‘he advantages of Catharine Hayes are youth, beauty, conduct, and genius. She is the first of British singers, and we have net one moment's , doubt that she will meet with a reception in Ame- rica that will be equal to the brightest dreams of her own enthusiasm, or the expectations of her friends. Her talent and her station in art are European; and America has ever corresponded to the decision of Europe, in a desire to cultivate that refinement in the one, which nece2sarily leads to ite adoption in the other, great cmpire of the world. ‘There is something Sey fascinating and deeply interesting in contemplating the flight of a young and brilliant creature like this, wafting in person the gifts of her gentle nature to a far and a foreign land? Apart from all the pecuniary views that such speculations arise and end in, no higher com- pliment can be paid to any country than the desire of @ stranger from other lanils to recejve its wel- come, to court its inquiry, and to obtain its sanc- tion. Catbarine Hayes will arrive in America in the bloom of her days, in the zenith of her talent, in the height of her popularity, and ia the fulness of public expectation. She will not disappoint the reatest that can be formed of her: and we tell our Columbian friends they must prepare for reason- able, but ample disbursement. e harine Hayes is an eminent «artiste and a charming woman ; and in bidding her awhil fare- well, let her not forget this snatch of the mighty bard of “her own loved island of sorrow":— “ Wanderings far a from how, With life ali new before us; Greetings warm when nome we ev From 8 Whose prayers wate —Leisure Moments.
