ws BY Our Boston THE MAILS. for the Coalition— The Donaldson Corresponience— Anecicte of Ex Governor Briggs— Railroad Cele- bration--Suicide of Mr. Woodbwry. The Boston whig? opened their campaign last Wednesday evening, by making a choice of a hun- dred and odd delegates to their party’: State Con- vention, which will be held week after next, in tho same gladiatorial arena in which the democrats recently displayed and settled their little dificulties. Looking wt the reported proceedings of Wednea- day evening's meeting, one might be led to sup- pose that it was all Websterism here. Some of the noted Webster men were chosen delogates, and a resolution in favor of the great maa, in the true thunderbolt style, was adopted. But this, as well as the talk about Horace Man, &e., is well known to te iniciated to be what the Turks elegantly call bos, and we Yaukees gammon The resolution and the talk were ‘‘full of sound and fury,” and will soon be found to have siguified nothing. The moet decided Wintbrop men were present, and cheered sad harraed for Mr. Webster like good fellows, aud were elected delegates by the aid of | y ‘Webster votes. A good many of the unsophisticated | from the North. friends of the Secretary of State were present, and were highly gratified at the astonishing evidence that was afforded of the popularity of their idol. They had abou! as much comprehension of the game ‘hat was going on around them asa King e aries spanicl has of a game of chess that ma: to be played in his presence. ‘Admmirab's buei men are t) Websterites; capital hands are they on the stock exchange, and! saould just as lief fal! in with a wolf in Hung: : them on the Rialto; but, in polit matters, @re as innocent, as so many lawbs, of the buteher’sart and mystery No farce ever contained Hampsbh ‘as jorm the staple of their political talk, and nothing but regard for the aomepatlenatt- ties of society prevents them from being laughed at to their faces at least fifcy timaes a day. The Roxbury whigs bave elected geauine Web- ster men to the convention, who wili vote for Mr. Walley for Governor, unless it should be found more profitable to vote fortome ore else. whigs, it is said that the anti- We pay will not press the election of Mr. Stevenson or Mz. Moray, as one of the delegates at large to the Natioval Convention. Mr. Stevenson is one of our Boston idols, and with much more of talent, and some decided claims to the esteem of tae public. is rising to the place which Mr. Abb: Lawrenca used to bold beiore he went off to dazzle the eyes of Victoria the first. He might have been our mem- ber of Coogrees, but would not accept tae plas. He went bail for one of the “higher law” gentls- menwho reeened Shadrach, and bas thus won pretty largely on the affections of the ‘‘man and other” class of our community, and has in other ys shown himself inendly to the abolitionized section of Maseachusetts whigery, which means four-fifths of the whole party, with the other fifth to go the same route, just s0 soon as the national administration shali bave passed into the hands of the democrats. Mr. Mor y is a capital fellow, and manages watters for whigs very adzoit}y. He is ut the bead of their organization, and ha: done as much to keep them tugether—to “save tho pieces,” porbaps, 1 should say—as any man io tue whole party, I care not how great he may be. hither be or Mr. Stevenson would have an excellent rage a » and would have well represented the paity ; » #5 they are both known to bein favor of ieneral Seott’s nomination, aad to een thought @ their elec- who saall | | tion, and to leave it for timetu dete | be (he delegates. The free soilers held their me: evening. I was not present. but am told tat was quite a lively afair. The most uotewortay oc- curremce was a specch from Mr. J, C Park. the seme gentiewan who lately declared that Mr. Win- | throp would be our peat Governor.
