We canzot, on the other hand, help expross- ing oum condemnation of the length to which | the people of New Orleans allowed themselves to be carried, the osher evening. Acourding to the accounts which we publish in this day's Herald, the populace attacked and destroyed the offis press and types of the Spanish paper La Union, demolished soverel eegar ebope and re*taurante, kopt by spaniarde, who were supposed ¢2 be inimical to the cause of Caban independence, and, worst of all, they assailed che office of the Spanish Consal, and eompeliod him to seek eafety in the city prison. co ox d, we learn, wore the people, that, no doubt, if the Spanish Consul had fallen into their | hands, his life would have been sacrificed. Those | proceedings cennet be justifed, under any cirevm- | etances. The palliation offered is, that the Spanish hed certain letters in hie possession, wri:tea by Americans who @ore executed, whisk be re- fused to deliver up, and that the people were ex- ected to freney by the presenso in their city of the mutilated remains of Colonel Clendenin and Captain Ker, whioh had been conveyed thither by the steamship Empire City While we aro {roe to admit that there things are woil ealoulated to arouse the indignation of the people of New Or- leans, we cannot go #0 fur a” wo say that they af- forded any exouse for these riotous proceedings, which will certainly have the effect of injuring the cause of Cuban independence, @2 well as our nw tional character abroad If the object of this wet wae to embroil Spain and the |'nited “tater in a war, the project will oertoinly fail, for no ad- ministration at Waabington could justify itfur e woment, but would promptly disavoe |: measures to punish those who took part in ths outrege and take It will be impossible, however, for the govern nt Which now per sdes the public mind on the evhjeot of t from assuming a vhape whied will be the continuance of Spanish fale in that though be way bs long ond Would arem ae te ines of uba, or island, o ruggts —a fixed, unalterable fact, no matter rat on may be in blood or treasuro, and | without respoct to what impediments or obstacles | the governmont of the United States may placo in | the way. If the excitemont which at present rages, | goes on increasing as it has imoroased within a few days, nothing but a cordom which ail the navies in * the workd could scarce form, oan prevent the de- | parture of expeditions from tho United Sta‘es, and their dobarkation on the shores of Cuba. Alrendy | we hear that men and munitions of war bave loft thie city for Cuba, and rumors are rife of expeditions having saile1, and similar assistance having been furnished, from other parts of tho coustry. There is very little question that these rumors are, in the main, vorreet, and that these movements are only the prelude to others on a larger and grander scale. Now the Spanish authorities had it in their power to prevent all this. It is well known that previous to the reception of tho intelligence of the execution of the fifty prisoners, a vast majority of the people of the United States were opposed to” interfering between the disadveted iu Cuba and the Spanish governwent, although they of course wished well to the cause of freedom in that islind, ag thoy wished suevess to the same cause in Haogary, many, Ireland, and, in eariior times, Greose. That intelligence produced a mighty change. When the people heard that their countrymen were treated ag pirates, that they were condemaed with- out a crial, and that they were executed in a man- ner and under circumstances that would diegrace | the Camanches, they avowed their intention uf ob- | teining the independence of Cuba. The aspect of the question was changed from that mo- | ment. Had the Spanish authorities sen these men to New York, and delivered them into the power of our government for trial, the re- volutionary spirit in the United States would have been crushed, and Cuba would have boon allowed | to remain a Spanish province, until the crevles ob- tained ite independence without reseiving aid or assistance from the United States, Such policy was not scared the result is before us. Opinions ef Pavlic Ea on the Recent News trom Cuba—Positions of the Potitival | Press. The last nows from Cuba hs given rigo to a va- riety of opinions from the political jouraals of the country, which cannot bat be interesting to those who aro seeking to kuow the tendonoy of theCuban question on our domestic political parties. Ti whig jourvals of tho city of New York are oppose tothe movement made in Cuba, aud some of thom are sanguine in their belief tnat Lopes, by this time, hus been cut to pieces. The Courier and Eaguiser is particularly etrong on this p dint, aud “foresaw the result from the very outset maintains that the Cuban scheme was consocted, | and has been kept alive, by unscrupulous villainy, | | and rejoices that the administration at Washingta | | isexbibiting a determination to enforce neutrality | by allthe means it can bring to bear. Iadeed, j while wishing that the honor and dignity of tao Amcrican character may be sustained, it does not | favor anything beyond the formal examination of | the scones at Havana, on the part of our govora- | ment, and commonds the most stringent ac.ion to | repress popular feeling. Tho Tiibune, ia favor always of revolutions in Europe, is opposed to the revolution in Cuba, and sides with the epirit of the | whig city journale~all of which endeavor to repress the popular feeling on the subject. Theve journals treat the whole spirit of the revolutionists as dan- gerous and unjustifiable. The leading whig journals of the ‘‘rural dis- tricts” are of a different complexion. The Albany | Evening Journal, which loge down the rule of action for free soil whig politicians, seems inclined , to save the party, and to meet the eubject with foel- | ngs uneramped by political margins. While itex- presses a belief that Lopez has been overthro #n— | while it does not believe that there is aay genoral feeling in Cuba against the Spanish governmont, or at least, that there is not courage enough there to establich a general revolution, it thinks it not well to overlook the fact that fifty men were shot with- | outatrial. It docs not thick tho movement is to be regarded as “ piraties!.” They were not pi- rates, it says. They did not go upon the sous to rob. They were revolutionirts, unlawfully, | it is true, but were not highwaymen. It insists | upon the distinction, as » simple act of jus- | tice to their motives, because they went to war upon a nation, and not upon individuals. This new tone of the free soil whig press is followed up by the opinion that, if the American Consul did net | interfere to secure a trial for his countrymen, and, failing in that, did not pretest against their | wholesale daughter, he deserves the exccrativns which await him. It was the duty of the Coneul, and of the commander of the United States ship | AJbany, to demand a trial, and, if Mat was refased, | | to protest againet the execution. The Buffalo £x- | | | per, and says of the execution, that “the blood of | these victims will be required at the hands of the | Spanish authorities, with awful interest. Tho act | is conciusive evidence of conscious weakness, and H was e0 cruel and vindictive ae to ontirely overcome | all the terror intended to be created by the ere | don.” It regrots the non-intorvention of the fde- | ral authorities. The Buffalo Courier, a national | democrat in politics, is indiguant at the couduct of | | the Spanish autuurities. | Prom New England we have other views. The Philadelphia Daily News, o whig journal, thanke the Spanish autboricics ought not to be called to account; but adds, that tho American Consui’s bebavior, if correctly reported, should rubject him to the action of the government. Is subsequently adds, that Uf the Cubans wish frsedom, they should themecivos strike the blow; and does not seem to regard the Pusrto Princip declaration | of independence, or the other rasvemonts of the Cabane, a4 of axy importance in justifying the ae 7 tistanee of American citizens. It continues by stating the siroumstances atvending the capture and the execution of Ame- rican citizens by the Spanish authorities—consures the Copsul—and quotes Mr. Webster’s letter to Mr. Fox as evidence that the victims were not pirates, to be shot down without a trial. ‘The Syracuse Siar, national whig, is disposed to think that there will be @ large body of men from Ar- kunsas and the Southern States ready to proceed to Cuba, and proposes a blockade of the mouth of the Missiesip:i, to stop vessels from giving aid to the Cubans. Tho Peansylvaniaa, a vational demooratio journal, is in favor of tho popular feeling, and sympathizes strongly with the attempt of the Cubsos to revolutionize tho island. It calls upon the goveramont to demand explanations of the Spani:h authorities, and cen- sures the conduct of \he American Consul, as on- uided to the loudest rebuke. It maintains that Amer can citizens ought to be true to the principles upon which our institations are founded, and that we have @ stfong natural and rational right to sympathize with those who stragg!e to live in an atmosphere of freedom. The Charleston Mercury, a ion jeurnal, does not particularly favor a revelution in Cuba, and enters into a long, and what m ght be termed a selfish, argument on the subject. It does not fear the annexation of Cuba beewure of any fatal draia on tho slave population ot South United States would be incongruous and unnatural. I does not meddle with the practical part of this absorbing question. The Savannah Georgii, Key Hican, and the News, are all in favor of the revolution, Tho former says:—* We believe that en independent provisional government has been | organized, end we should not be eurprisod, at any | hour, to ace the Pampero, wita the flag of inde- | perdens Cuba unfurled from her mast, make her Such peared within a few days.
