‘Much in prices. gm the stock market. If holders can eustain prices at Present points, they will do more than we suppose poosl- Die. Everything depends upon the demand for, and sup- piy of, money. We do not like the appearance of things im Wall street. Speculators and others are struggling slong from day to day, with the hope that money will | soon be more plenty and they be relieved from their em- | Darrassments and most pressing diffloulties A contiau- ation, therefore, of the present pressure upon the market, will prostrate all those who are looking for immediate Relief. ‘The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port, to-day, amounted to $155,199 40; payments, | $31,368 43-—balance, $2.861,375 89. ‘The news from Europe by the steamship Arctic’ et this port from Liverpool, is rather more favor- able than that by the previous steamers. Quo- | tetions for cotton had slightly improved, with ‘an active demand from the trade and for expert. Th°® eorn markets were ina very unsettled cendition. The ‘weather had, for some days, been rather unfavorable for the harvests; but prices for breadstuffs were not firm, In the manufacturing districts there was more activity, and more confidence among buyers. Large orders had been Feecived from the United States, which were in course of qaiflment Money matters remained unchanged. Consols ‘were quoted the rame, but railway securities slightly ‘Bectuated from day to day, showing a feverish state of the market. American stocks were quiet; the limited @emand had not, however, unfavorably affected quote- tons, ‘The demand for foreign exchange, for remittance by the steamers leaving this port on Tuesday and Wedoes- day, bas been thus far only to a mederate extent. bod quote bills on London 9% 104 per cent premium; on Paris, Of. 1234 a Sf. 113;; Amsterdsm, 4034 #41; Bremen’ * 78 0784s; Hamburg. 36 2.364%. Very little epecio has as yet been engaged for shipment by the Washington or Miogara. Itis reported that several failures have occurred in Albany. In the central and western cities some leading ‘business men have also been compelled to suspend pay ment The Cumberland Civilian says that it is reported that the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company have deter- mined to reduce the freight on coal, from Cumberland to Baltimore , to $2 per ton. The new de laine mill of the Manchester Company wil f° into operation in two or three montha. It will employ six hundred operatives, Several new mills, of large ca. pacity, will be employed, ina few months, upon de laine: and the probability is, that this branch of dry goods ma- nufactures, which has been the only one that has paid ‘any profit the past year, will Le overdone the next year: and then the manufacturers will be crying out for more protection, and attribute their losses to the low tariff of 1846. A large number of counterfeit $5 notes, on the Thames ” Bank, Norwich, Comn., have been put in circulation ia Cincinnati. The bills are new, and have an excellent appearance. The Cincinnati Gazette says they are the most dangerous counterfeits ever put in circulation in that city; the best evidence of which is the fact that they have been freely taken and paid out by several bapks and brokers. ‘The returns of the Bank of England, for the week en Sng the 19th of July, compared with those for the wee Preceding, exhibit the following changes:— Banx or Exciaxp, Jury 19, 1861. issue, 283.560 Decrease. 867, Old Without alteration Decrease.. 154,608 | Increase,, 7,839 | Inorease.. 27,190 ‘There is no feature in these returns that is not suffi- clently accounted for by the payment of the dividends, which was in full operation during the week, and the bulk of which may be considered to have heen completed. According to the official returns the total note circule- tion of all the private banks of England and Wales, during the week ending the 12th July last, was £3,450,- 462; in the week preceding, the amount was £3,432,578, ‘There is, consequently, an increase of £17,884. The note circulation of the joint stock banks during the same week was £2,730,025, and the previous week's return being £2,720,143, the increase is shown to be £9,882. On taking into consideration the active circulation of the Bank of England, which in the week in question was £20,190 975 (being £645,720 more than the week preced- img), we find the aggregate note circulation of England 1nd Wales to be £26,371,462, which shows an increase { £673,486 as compared with the returns for the previ- ous week, ending the Sth of July. As regards the fixed issues, the private banks were £1,282 980, and the joint stock banks £679,962 below the ihe. amount authorized to be issued, making a total of £1,- 862.942 below the fixed amount. ‘The annexed quotations for bullion and coin inthe Principal markets we take from the London News. It will be seen by the above comparative ftatement, that the Bank of France is in an impregnable position. Ite bullion on hand amounts to two millions of sterling more than its circulation, while its discounted bills have not only reached @ small sum, but are decreas: ng. The Bonk of England is gradually losing its bullion, wrtwithetanding the large importations and compara- tively limited exportations of specie The importe of bul- fon into London duriog the week ending the th of July, include 586,000 dollars by the Europa from the United States; 1,835.103 doliars (987,689 dotlars silver, ‘827,504 gold) from the Weert Indies and Pacific by the Thamer, £110 by the Ganges, Peninsular and Oriental steamer, from Alexandria; and £1,000 by the Madrid, Penineniar and Oriental steamer (£000 from Gibraltar, snd £1,000 from Lisbon.)
