we ahs regan adi behest fee ne ia ts if the bebe wRate pene na will not be compelled to keep their stocks, or sell without the profit anticipated. Both parties are in very curious position. The bears hardly daresell iargely short at present prices, aad the bulls have suffered so severely, that many of them are little able to operate even to & moderate extent. Capitalists will, without doubt, pick up some of the best railroad stocks, at present prices, for permanent investment ; but the future doe® not look fair enough to induce large purchases on time, without the means to take them in at maturity, and the ability to hold for any length of time, in the event of their being depreciated. ‘The money market continues ina very stringent con- “ition, It is somewhat easier than it has been, but the demand is active, and the supply comparatively limited: ‘The rates of interest range at the highest points, and Pretty severe shaves have been submitted to im the street. It is our impression that the worst is yet to ome; that we have bad, thus far, but a trifling stringency to what will sooner or later be experienced. We antici" pated that the recent sudden contraction would be but temporary, or rather that its full force would be but temporarily felt; that o partial recovery would be real- ized, to be followed by @ relapse. We have passed through all but the last, the most alarming stage of the isease. It would be well enough for all to prepare them. selves as much as possible for su~h a state of things, for come it must, perhaps at a time when the least expected: ‘The banks have been much blamed for the part they Played in the recent contraction in the meney mar- ket; but the out-door bankers, the private capitalists, the great bear speculators of Wall strect, are the parties who #0 suddenly produced the stringency complained of: ‘There is a power behind the Wall street banks stronger than the banks themselves. The banks must look out or their own interests, and in doing so they must avoid, ss much as possible, all extremes; whereas it is for the Btereste of the money power outside of the banks to bring about sudden contractions, and make one extreme ollow another in rapid succession. ‘The anthracite coal trade continues very active on all the lines of coal transportation. The Lehigh Navigation Company brought down, for the week ending on Seturdey Jast, 28,754 tons, and for the season 529.359 tons. The Schuylkill Navigation Company brought down, for the week ending on Thursday, 17,073 tons, and for the season 314,922 tons. The Reading Railroad Company, for the week brought down 40,492 tons, and for the year 1,017,434 tons, against 700,608 tons to the same time last year. What is a most satisfactory feature in this season’s coal trade is, it is attended with a brisk demand and rising prices. The amount of coal shipped from Cumber- Jand by the canal, during the week ending the 6th inst., was 1,149 tons; during the week ending the 2d inst., 4,546 tons were sent to Baltimore by railroad. ‘The City Bank of Brooklyn has declared a semi-annual @ividend of three and a half per cent. The Mechanics’ Insurance Company of Newark, a semi-annual dividend of ten per cent. Reports have been circulated unfavorable to the com- mercial credit of Gen. James, of Providence, Rhode Tpland, the enterprising manufacturer of that place. It is stated upon the most undoubted authority, that the em- barrastments which led to these reports were accidental andtemporary. At his request, a thorough examination has been made of his affairs, and the result shows assets, which are very large, to be nearly three times the amount of his liabilities, leaving him, in any event, in the posses, sion of large fortune. It is an interesting etatement, if for nothing ele than the great number of items which make up our foreign export trade The shipments of flour from Bui:!wore to foreign porte during the week ending op Thursday last, amounted, in i barrels. INCIDENTS ON THE WAY. | Our ‘Travelling Correopeudence, SWANNONDALE eet Jerrerson Co., Va. yesday, August 5, 181. z The President of the United States, accompanied by the Hon. A. H. H. Stuart, Secretary of the Interior, Hon. Charles M.Conrad, Secretary of War, and W. W. Corcoran, Esq , of the distinguished | banking house of Corcoran & Riggs, left W ton, at six o’clock this morning, for the Valley of Virginia. At the Relay House, thirty miles, where the road diverges to the east and west, they stopped for the Western train, and having the interval of over an hour, they here waited to taketheir broak- fast quietly and leisurely. Leaving the Relay at nine o’clock, the train, under full head of steam, proceeded rapidly up the narrow defile of a dashing stream to Ellicott’s Mills, a fine manufacturing vil- lage. The fact that the train here stopped a few minutes for wood and water, had attracted a crowd of several hundred people to the station, and their cries of ‘Fillmore !” “Fillmore !” “Bring bias out !’" were not te be disregarded. The President walked out on the platform, and being instantly recognized, was received with the liveliest cheering, and during the brief time allowed them, the sovereigns, of both exes, came forward to confirm their weloome by & hearty shake of the hand. anda few words of per sonal congratulations. But the whistle whistled, the engine wheezed and coughed from its fiery lungs, its muscles of steel and iron were in motiea, the people cheered, the President bowed, and off we went whisking up the crooked course of the dashing little Patapsco river, between wild and romantic hills—now along the edge of a precipice, now roar- ing through dark tunnel, now over @ bridge, an then between green meadows and corn fields—wind ing andtwisting and roaring along, for twenty mile or more, until we reached the summit, at least a thousand feet above tidewater, where we strike another stream, and descend toward the Upper Potomac. At Ridgeville, Sykesville, Monrovia, at every little stopping place, to the Point of Rocks, on the Potomac, the country people were gathered to have a lookat the President, if nothing more. But at every opportunity the President came out, and descending to the grouad, went to shaking hands as fast as possible. .At one or two points, the people cheered; but at'most places they stared» and wondered, and admired; for they were all evi dently gratified with the personal appearance of our chief magistrate. At the Point of the Rocks, where the cliffs of the Catoctin range of mountains impinge abruptly upon: the river, the President remarked that the scenery was becoming wild and picturesque; but his observa tions were cut shert by the entrée of a committee of invitation from Harper's Ferry. There was an in- terchange of the usual compliments, shakiog. of hands with some of the natives who came yd we wero off again, rattling along, with the Chesa- peake and Ohio canal and Potomac river, and the Papeomcps on the one side, and with the 3 pend ing ci rags of the mountains ayecnnging. Se on a4 yr, just room en ing been scooped ous an the cliffs ana the river for the railroad and canal through this grand canone of the Potomac. HARPER’S FERRY. The scene at Harper's Ferry of the “‘mecting of the waters” of the Potomac and the and their passage through the gorge ofthe Blue Ridge mountains, is described by Jefferson a6, wortby a trip across the Atlantic in a vessel.
