Both these individuals have enjoyed office for several years, and were the respec tive beads of an alliance which embcaced the French nationalité of Lower Canada, and theradical reform- ets of Upper Canada. ‘ ‘The compact bet ween parties holding such anta- gonist ideas could only be preserved by a rigid ad- herence to a negative policy—one that would respect the peculiar opinions of each section, and separate the legislation to sui: the capacity and feelings of each. In logal parlance, the Canadas are not united. The jurisprudence is different in each; but politieaily speaking, they were united by the imperial act of 180. Mr Lafontaine, as the recognized leader of a numerous body of French Canadian members, and Mr. Baldwin, a» the leader of a very small minority of Upper Canadian mem- bers, by combining their forces, formed a working majority in the Assembly. [t was fusion of ultra- montagnards and sovialists, suited to the paltry seale ot colonialism, unenlivened by genius, origi- nality, or energy. The stagnant atmosphere of a colony is not congenial to patriotism, aud the blan- dishments of my Lord the Governor are too potent for the feeble intellects that previously enlightened the obscurity of a country parish Mr. Lstontaine from the humbler paths of life, in the earlier days ot Mr. Papineau, t» whow be acted as subaltern. The Season at Fort Hamilton—Amusements, §c. “Well! and howare you now?” Whenthe ther- mometer is at Sf deg. here, with the whole horizoa free, and with a breeze that has an uninterrupted sweep at us, whether it comes from sea or land, what must it be with you, surrounded, as you are, with mountains of brick, which have already accuma- lated the heat of nearly two months of summer weather—to say nothing of the intensified odors which a July sun raises from the gutters and sinks of the great metropolis ! The season is now well opencd here. This great house, though not erowded, is well filled—as much so as is desirable for the highest enjoyment of all its present occupants. Within the last ten days it has grown gay and lively, as its social circle has ac- quired consistency and harmony.
