Commissioner Ingraham has been nearly all day ex- ‘amining into a charge of Post Office robbery, pending egainst Edward D. Yates, lately a clerk in the Post OMce. ‘Thomas P. Shallcross, the agent cf the Post Office De partment, while examining the room of the defendant yesterday, came across a letter without an envelope’ which is claimed by Martin FE. Harmstead, as having been addressed to him by Maria Lamar, since married to ‘Thomas Buckley. The letter was dated Toronto, Canada ‘West, April 15, 1851, and was one of several that had miscarried from the same —, and had mostly contained money in pay for books sent to her. One containing $70, sent last fall, did not come to hand. ‘The defendant generally assisted in casing the box letters, and knew that Mr. Harmstead was in the habit of receiving letters from Cavada with money remittances, he baying conversed with him seyeral timer about the letters that were miseed. The plaintiff and defendant are connected by marriage, their wives being cousins, The defendant was much agitated upon the disc of the letter, but attempted to explain it by esying it was from a lady correspondent of his In the cross-examination of Mr. "ahalloross the agent of the Department, he said that his attention to the Phila- deipbia Post Office was occasioned by the frequent Sosses ocourring there during the last two years, and ‘tbat be came bere, by especial direction of the Bepart- ment, on the llth ‘justant. ‘The Fravklin Hose Company, which, a year since, was vat out of service by order of the Court, has taken the Bua ‘again, under the appellation of the Fame Engino, ‘As the Moyamensing Hose Boys, their former deadly ‘Opponents, are also in service, by special act of our le it will be a merey if a collision does not occur the next time they meet. The Plood—Health of St. Lowis—Death of Mr. Lesuewr— The Momtesquious—Late Hon. Bryan Mullanphy’s Estate After three weeks of a flood such as the valley of the Mississippi has not experienced since 1844, and but twice ina half century, we were entertaining hopes of a recession of the Father of Waters, when the windows of Jheayen again appear to have opened on us, and almost continued rains threaten to swell the enraged torrent to « height never before known since the time of the country's discovery. The highest point the water at- tained during the present rise, was thirty-three feet ten inches above low water mark,or four fect piae inches lower than it was at its greatest height in 18H. Fora fow days it declined a little, but is again rising rapidly, end indications are, that it will exceed the flood of the year last mentioned. The rise of water annually caused by the melting of the rnow on the Rocky Mountains has not yet come down. If this should come upon us before the prevent freehet ceases, an extent of calamity must ensue unparalleled in the West. For some three weeks our entire levee front has been inundated, and from one ex- tent of the hd the other, the water has been from two and a balf to three feet deep on the store floors on Front street. This has greatly embarrassed trade, as ‘we are left without a steamboat landing. except at the mouths of cross streets.
