NEWS BY THE MAILE. Our Washington Wasnixoron, June 20, 1851. Tre Position and Prospects of Mr. Webster—The Whig Penn- sylvanta Convention. Mr. Webster remains at head-quarters; and, with the | est of the Cabinet, excepting Mr. Corwin, will probably remain to aid the President in the laying of thé corner- stone of the capitol extension. on the fourth of July. At present the Secretary of State is immersed in the affairs — of Nicaragua and Hayti; and by the first Monday in De- | cember the President will doubtless have a full and satis- factory account of Central America and San Domingo, to eubmit to Congress, in his message—full and satisfactory wa it tho it is to be regretted that the heed al bes bey hardihood to goa little further | than an alliance of ‘tion with Great Britain, in- ‘yoiving « pledge to John Bull that the United States shall pot annex any of these new countries. We say this ist) ‘be regretted, for it looks like placing the honorand chasacter of Our government in the keeping of the govern- ment of Great Britain. It is the “entan, ling alliagce”’ with Jobn Bull which, of all things in the world, should be avoided. No good can come from it, which could not | ‘etter be obtained without it; and the thing is full af ultimate miechief and disaster Meantime, the question of Mr. Webster's prospects for the Presidency becomes a very important question. He ‘has been waiting, like Mr. Buchanan. for bis turn, until | there is nothing but the last chance left. for 1852, from all | appearances, will be the last chance for all the old poli- Cicians. He must be stoppelf, or the calling of a Whig National Con- Vettion will be a mere matter of form. If, therefore, in the fortheoming Whig Convention at Lancaster, Pa there should be any resolutions offered urging the effi- cicucy and bencticent operations of the Fugitive Slave Jaw. aud should such conditions be adopted, it is barely ible that the pouination of Scott may be postponed. Weis however, the compromises get the cold shoulder. while ed as one of the seven wonders of the pr than any one of the seven wise men of time wili be pretty well up with Mr. Webster, as the Whig National Couvention is to be res- neil It is said, however, that there may be no National ‘Whig Convention ; and that the field may be left open for nominations, separately, by the whigs of the several States. We expect no National Convention, however; ‘but it remains to be tried whether. if Scott is nominated without a platform, be will run South of Mason and Dxoo, or whether the whigs of the Southern States will ot ret up Mr. Fillmore or Mr. Webster as the Sow hern wational whig candidate. Gen. Scott must either give up Seward or the South. He will most likely hold on to Seward, end let the South go. Mr. Welster, then, as a iveul Union Compromise candidate. may become rity to the Southern whigs.
