Marine Affairs. Lavsen or 4 Pwtaveuemia asp Liverroo. Steam- ov. —Messrs. Perrine, Patterson and Btack, of Williams- burgh, will launch, to-morrow (Saturdey) afternoon, at three o'clock, the steamship “ City of Pittsburgh,” to run in counection with the “City of Glasgow,” (now on the line), “City of Philadelphia,” (now building), and the * City of Manchester” (in coure of construction, on the Clyde), all of which are expected to be ready and in operation within the next twelve months. ‘The * City of Pittaburgh,” Ike her coxnsorts, is a pro- pellor, Her engines are being built at the West Point ‘Works, and are to be of great power, and will be put upin a uperior manner, from drawings by Chas. Copeland, Esq. The bull of this versel is constructed of live oak, white oak, locust and cedar, She is extra fastened, and her frame coged together, and braced with iron diagonal braces throughout. Her builders have been successful in their endeavors to make her perfect ship, and she has, undoubtedly, one of the strongest and best fastened hulls ever constructed. The building of her has been done mostly under the ruperintendence of Mr. E, Mills, & gentleman for rome years closely connected with American steam navigation, and is alike creditable to him and the builders. The City of Pittsburgh” is owned by the Pennsyl- vania Steamship Company, (the agents of which, in this city, are Messrs. Richardson, Watson & Co.) and she will be commanded by Capt. William C. Stoesbury ; the ‘engines will be under the control of Mr. M. M. Thomp- ron, The dimensions of her are :—Length, 255 feet ; beam, 40 feet ; depth, 26 feet; and she is 2,250 tons govern- ment, or 3,000 tons carpenter's measurement. Mone Strame x THe Nicanacua Rovre.—Another rteamer for the San Juan river, will leave Philadelphia in 8 day or two,and the Prometheus will leave here on or about the 13th of July, with passengers for California, via Nicaragua, This will be pleasing intelligence to the Jarge number of persons who are waiting for the opening | of this route, that they may visit their friends, or seek their fortunes in California, without encountering the dangers and hardships of a journey across the Isthmus of Panama, In connection with the above, we find the following in the Ddaware Republican of the 16th inst. Steam Communication Berwery San Francisco anv ne Sanpwien Istanps.—We see by the San Francisco Tapers, that Mr. J. B, Ulm, and others, have succeeded ia establishing a steam line between San Francisco and thy | Sandwich Islands. The steamer, Commodore Stockton, | was to make her first trip from San Franeisco, on about the 22d ult., as the pioneer of the line. It is the tirst advance towards communication with Japan and China, from the United States, and will, no doubt, if properly conducted and encouraged, prove advantageous to the parties engaged, and produce most important results to the young State of Californ' Curren Sir Hoxxer.—Mesers. Westervelt & Mackay have postponed the launching of this vessel, from Satur- day to Tuesday next, at about four o'clock, ler di- meprions were inaccurately reported the other wy. ‘They are—length, 206 feet; breadth, 40 feet; depth, 23 feet: Stramen Roaxoxe, the first of a line to run between | this city and Richmond, Va., will also be launched from Messrs, Westervelt & M immediately after the Hernet. She is a fi et long, Fixe, Vesseis.—Two beautiful iron steamers—one called the John M. Clayton, the other Sir Henry Bulwer—sailed trem thie port a few days ago, for San Juan de Nicaragua. ‘They were built. by Messrs, Harlan & Hollingsworth. for ©. Vanderbilt, Esq... of New York city, President of the AUantic and Pacific Ship Canal Company. They tiful specimens of naval architecture, and will penal credit to their builders. Culling them after the two distinguished gentlemen who negotiated the late treaty between this country and great Britain. in refer- | ence to the Nicaragua territory, is a beautiful eonceit, and cannot fail to inspire many of those who may have the fortune to travel in them, with feelings of pleasure, They will be a great advantage to the adventurer in going to or from California, reducing the land travel to abcut twelve miles, Too much credit cannot be awarded Mr. Vanderbilt for bis efforts in projecting and carrying cut the rcheme of connecting the Atlantic with the Pacific—the project is worthy of his mind and ability. ‘The advantages which will accrue in consequence of it, | cannot be calculated; but we do not hesitate to say they will prove such as to place bis name with those of the first men ot the age. In reference to these boats, we may remark that they ® were built in fifty working days, and sre not only & proof of the skill and ingennity of Messrs Harlan & [lollingsworth, but also of their ability to fill their contracts in a remarkably short time, Lavxen.—The Liverpool packet ship, Staffordshire was launched by Mr. Donald McKay, East Boston, on Tuerday afternoon. A large concourse of speotators were present. many of whom were on board when she left the ways. This fine vessel is to be commanded by Captain Albert H. Brown, so favorably known to the travelling public in other packets of Train’s line, The clipper ship Nightingale. of 1.100 tons, was launch. ed at Portemouth, N. H..on the 16th jnst., to be com- manded by Capt. FP. A. Miller. She is expected at Bos ton shortly, and will soon after be dixpatched by Messr« Davis & Co., for London, with passengers for the World's. | Fair. Tne Tiowas Powrnt.——This splendid steamboat, which ilroad company, arrived at cur porton Wednesday evening, in thirteen hours, from New York, She is thirty feet longer than the Ohio, handsomely furnished, and in point of speed she has no equal in the waters of the Delaware, She is to run to Cape May.-—Del. Republican, June With. Siar Ben.pine 1s Martaroisert.—This thriving villags is taking « high rank among those places distinguished for their naval architecture. Several sbips. of flue construction and elegamt model, have been launched there this reason, Im addition to these, there are now at that place two ships upon the stocks, One of these. in the yard of Josiah Holmes & Son. is of about 400 tons burthen. and is contracted by Messrs. Charles KR. Tucker & Co., of New Bedford, ‘The other, in the yard of Willson Barstow, is of somewhat smaller dimensions, and is built for Mr Edward © Jones, of New Bedford. In the same yard. the keel of a ship of about 500 tons burthen has teen laid. to be owned by Mr Edmund Allen, of Fairbaven. All these ships are intended for the whale fishery. Not but that the charms continually developed in the private life of the fair Bwede, and the crowning graces of her be- nevolence, entitle her to all the adoration she com- mands, and render mitt and natural the superior homage which is to her. It is the pure musi- nt, the wonderful flexibility of veice, the power- ful and varying expression which almost translates the foreign language to an unipformed ear, and the grand combination of Parodi’s power, together, which enchain and enrapture her audiences, and have given her such well earned distinction, without the extraneous aids whieh adern her celebrated cotemporary. We do not profess the skill of musical eriticiam; but taking the de- cisions of those who do, and trying ‘them by the test of our own delight in listening to her first performance here, we say that to the lovers of art « banquet is now offered which loses nothing by comparison with that which not long ago was considered at the rummit of musical excel- lence. The room was not more than two-thirds full. This, however. was occasioned by circumstances which were no wise in disparagement of the interest apper- taining to the occasion. ‘The time of Parodi’s arrival was not anticipated by her agent here until late the ning before, and two of the morning journals having large circulations did not contain a word of advertise. ment when she would appear, Her arrival and intended concert were, therefore, comparatively unknown in | many parts of the city.’ Since the concert, however, there has been every possible premonition of a closely crowded house to-night, The audience went away fully | delighted; and we understand there is a prevailin; de rire that to-night’s demonstration may weigh something towards induclog the charming caatatrice and her coms panions to prolong their stay in the city.—St. Louis In- telligencer, June 9. Brooklyn City Intelligence. ATTEMPT TO MURDER A WIFE. Before Judge Greenwood. and Alderman Leech and Pell. Jury 18.—Crry Counr.—Patrick Bradley was brought up this day, charged with an assault, with intent to kill his wife. in November last. It may be recollected, that the particulars of this case have before been mentioned, on the c asion of the prisoner’s arrest in Ulster county, whit)er be had absconded. By the evidence of the wife Lerseii, and a son, about eleven years old, it appeared that the prisoner had made a most murderous assault, under the following circumstances :—They had led « moxt unhappy life for some months, and on the night pamed in the indictment, she bed boca obliged to go out to seek the assistance of an officer. Her son accompanied her, and when they had nearly reachrd the Hamilton ferry, the prisoner overtook them, and struck his wife with a stone tied in a hankerchief, over the front of her head. She then fell upon one knee, when he struck her again. knocking her down senseless. A third and a fourth Low were given, when the stone flew out of the hanker- chief. When the unfortunate woman had begged to be taken home, he replied, that he was determined to kill her, und he was willing “to swing” for it. The son, who stuttered very much. gave, nevertheless, a most vivid | picture of the horrifying scene; and his story was, alto- gether, the most painful narration that has for some time been witnessed. The evidence of the principal wit- nest es was corroborated materially, and the jury returned a verdict of guilty. CONVENTION OF THE HUDSON RIVER BAPTIST ASSO” CIATION SOUTH. This association has been holding its 36th sannal ression with the first Baptist Church (Rev.
