As it is almost im) ible to furnish an answer to the various allega- tions which have been made, I shall adopt the state- | ments made by a correspondent in the New York Journa! of Commerce and Baltimore Sun. (being one and the same | person.) as the most responsible which have appeared | for comment, and upon which most of the unfounded | epeculations have been made. The following extract is taken from a letter in the Journal of Commerce. dated ‘2%th May, in reply to certain explanations touching Mr. Corwin’s cennection with the Mexican claim, which the writer in the Jownel alleges to be untrue. ‘The facts of the case. as 1 have reason to believe, are these :— | ~ Mr. Corwin was a candidate for the portfolio of the ‘Treasury, und it was for some time in doubt whether he or Mr. Vinton, of Ohio, would be preferred; bat, as soon a3 be ascertained that Mr. Filimore had determined to | offer the place to him. he gave notice to certain intimate friends of his, through his kinsman, Robert Corwin. that his pecuniary condition would prevent his acceptance of the office, unless his contingent interests in the Mexican | © tsims should first be disposed of. ~ John Young, of the city of New York, and another utleman of that city. undertovk, at the request of Mr. Bobert Corwin, to raike money on these claims. Robert Corwin made an estimate of the value of the claims, esti- | mating them at upward of $100,000, and figing to the Lund serip its par value.
