Suvpay, May 25—6 P. M. ‘Very little of interest has transpired in the stock mar- t during the past week. Prices have experienced out the usual fluctuations, but do not exhibit much riation, compared with those current at the close of e week previous. There is no speculation in the mar- om one broker to another, and that class of operators probably larger holders at this moment than at any vious period within the past two years. It is, there- , important to them that an upward movement in ices should take piace at the earliest moment. We ve, for some time past, heen unable to arrive at a sa- \etory conclusion in relation to the future course of he stoek market. The absence of any speculative ex- tement at a season of the year when more or less is lsually experienced—more particularly when all the ele- ents of speculation are in such a scund and healthy pndition—is a matter calculated to excite considerable Any amount of money can be obtained @ moment's notice, at the lowest rates of inte- , upon the right kind of security. There is a ide margin for an improvement in most of the leading i#road stocks; the outsiders generally, made money ing the last speculative movement in the fancies, od it appears to us as though the time was not far dis- nt when prices will expand as rapidly as at any jod during the past two years. In the event of such state of things, great discrimination must be used in selection Of stocks for operating in. There are seve, ‘upon the list, which it would be dangerous to touch present prices, or even ten per cent below, while in ‘bers there is even a greater margin for improvement Railroad, Reading Railroad, Farmers’ Loan, Canton ny, and Morris Canal, would not be safe to touch at mat prices, or even at considerable depreciation; hile Harlem, Long Island, Erie Railroad bonds, of al , Edgeworth Co., Norwich and Worcester, have hin themselves such elements of improvement that activity in the market must give them an upward t of considerable importance. Rrie Railroad stock is, without doubt, the most in- fancy in the market, and it is a matter of astonish- t to many, how it is sustained. It is nothing more lees than a fancy of the first water; for it is well inown that the company never have earned a dividend, im the estimation of many, never will. The dividend on the Jet of July will be paid out of the capital, as ore, After that time all the dividends stock will get, must come from the net earnings, or out of eapital, and go into construction account Railroad is a very uncertain stock for outsiders b operate in. It fluctuates suddenly and largely, and its h and earnings are subject to #0 many contingencies we know not whut change a week, or even # day, may oduce in the market. It is, therefore, a dangerous rity to touch; but to those who are not deterred by with the chances of great profita or great ig Railroad shares certainly offer induce- its. Farmers’ Loan isa stock in relation to which Little is known. Itis controlled by « small clique speculators, is of doubtful value, subject to great fluc- ons, and isa dead weight in the hands of holders. company ‘holds «large amount of valuable property, of which is unproductive. It has on hand any tity of lewsuits, involving immense amounts of mo- , upon the result of which depends the value of the ock. It is, however, a better security for speculators p deal in, who.care very little about the real value of yy stock, as it fluctuates more, and is more easily ma than stocks better known in the market. Canton . bas been working up for several weeks past, and reappear to have considerable confidence in it, regular annual meeting of the corporation will be eld at Baltimore on the Sth of June, A meeting of rn stockholders was held in Boston a few days and twelve delegates were chosen to represent the okb of that city and vicinity, at the annual ting. We shall probably have « report of the 8 of the corporation, when those inte- will be better able to judge of the value ‘their investments. The fluctuations in this have, within the past twelve months, been b enormous that many have been ruined, and we seo good reason why similar results should not follow movements Canton Company may be, for aught }e know to the contrary, avery good stock to buy and for a length of thme; but outsiders of moderate .. who buy on time more than they can pay for when , will, im five cases out of six, be completely cleaned | Morris Canal is shaking in the wind. The old ock is ina very doubtful position. Consolidation will on take place, when one share of new stock will be is- for four of old. What effect this will have upon the et price of the old stock remains to be seen. The n is that the consolidated stock will not sell for pur times ax much as the old stock. In relation to those stocks in which the margin for is mufficient to attract outside epeculators, there is one opinion among those who have thoroughly inves their affairs. Harlem is, at this moment, a six cent dividend paying stock om ite par value, and is no doubt but that the semi-annual dividend: yable on the Ist of August next, will be three per More than that per cent will have been earned that time, and there will be eurplus enough, af- paying it, for any contingency; and in view of futuse productiveness of the road, the direo- can give no reason, that will be satisfactory to ¢ tockholders, for declaring # semi-annual divi- less than three per cent, The semi-annual divi- last year were two per cent each, and the increase earnings, thus far this year, bas been nearly equal to additional two per cent for the whole year on the 4 stock. The Harlem being » full «ix per cent stock ite par value, is, at present prices, one of the cheap- 4n the market. Long Island offers great inducements speculators and purchasers for permanent investment. debt of this company is only three hundred and ty-one thousand dollars. and it has on hand cash ough t0 moet the outstanding obligations now due, or to beoame due, as well as to provide for the necos- expenses incurred in relaying the Jamaica track, repairing the residue of the road. The gross earn- , Uhuas far thin year, show a large per cent increase those for the corresponding period Inst, The net ings last yoar, 1850, amounted to $50,061 25, equal & dividend on the stock, after paying interest on bt, of seven per cet on the present market ice. ‘This year, the net earnings will not be less seventy thousand dollars which will give a hand- @ dividend on the stock, An arrangomont has jen made with the Brooklyn and Jamaica Rail- 4 Company, by which the vent paid to that Impany, from and after the Ist of February, 1951, is terially reduced, Under the former a.*rangement, estimate of $210,000 receipts for 185.\. the Brookiyn p Jamaica Railrond Company would rece! ve as rent, for Jour, $20,671 49, while under the prose arrange nt they will receive but $23,100, making a aferenge he Lomy Island Railroad Company of $6471.43. The penditures which the company have made, and which Is pon now in progtyss, will place the road in excellent or- | sont fy mall in, Cl Brigham & Day, ‘Pearl stiect, | | Barkerpers, Gardeners, Ortlere, ¢ learn respectable trades men o ba honest and competent persons for any of the abo pre ates Orders hy mail attended to. to provide fully for the increasing trafic of the island, The stock is now selling st ® very low price; and in view of the prospective productiveness of the road, it appears tous that an advance cannot much longer be delayed, ‘There is no doubt but that all the bonded securities of the Brie Railroad Company are good investments at pre- sent prices. Some of them pay @ high rate of interest on the market value, while their safety is almost beyond a contingency. Norwich and Worcester Railroad stock has been quite steady during the past two or three weeks, and as it is a five per cent dividend paying se- curity on its par value, out of its present net earnings, the probability is that it will gradually improve in mar- ket value. This company has a local business nearly equal to its gross receipts, so that it is not dependent upon any through traffic to keep up its dividends. Its earnings, thus far this year, show a handsome increase, compared with last, and a fair surplus will be left at the close of the year, after paying ifs usual dividends. The amount of specie exported from this port for the week ending the 24th inst., was as annexed:— eNTS oF Srecim FROM THe Pont or New Youx, uba— . .. $570,000 Spanish quarters, $4,000 Eng silver & gold 14,785 Hayti— Bremen— Am, gold. 3,605 gold........ 20,000 Fenexwela— For. gold & silver 27120 | Mex dolls,...... 2000 Brazit— Mex. dolls,...... 26,000 Total....... $668,600 This is independent of the amount ($424.000) taken out by the Arctic yesterday. Thie sum, added to the y | above, makes a total of $1,002,000—equal to about one half of the shipments the week previous. The receipts last week were more than one and @ half millions of dol- | ers, from California, The receipts of the Utica and Schenectady Railroad Company, for the month of April and part of May, in each of the two past years, were as annexed :— _tiea axp Seurevecrapy Rarenoan, 1850—April on +++ $55,212 OL Fey ist to iéth: 25 566 09 ———$80,778 10 1851—April......: 49 99 May lst to lath, 20,314 45 404 44 Decrease in 1851, $8,319 68 It will be noticed that the freight earnings are not pub- lished. These have largely increased, and the whole earnings of tho road for the above period, show @ gain instead of a lose, It is very seldom that this company | i f its operations, and we should not The bulk of the transfers of stocks daily made is | MAKCsPublic any © perations, have been favored with the above exhibit but for the purpose of defeating, if possible, the object the Mohawk Valley Railroad Company have in’ view, vis :—the con- struction of a road on the south side of the Mohawk river, from Schenectady to Utica. By showing that there has been a falling off in the receipts of the old Utica and Schenectady Railroad Company, it is no doubt supposed that the public will be deterred from subscribing to the stock of the contemplated road, The object is too trans. parent to have the desired effect. The new road can be constructed at a cost equal to about one half the expen- diture on the present road; and as the local business of the valley of the Mohawk is derived from the south side of the river, the new road will command much the largest portion, and be ina strong position to compete for the through trade. The receipts of the Rochesterand Syracuse Railroad Company during the month of March, amounted to $94,000, against $19,000 for the corresponding month in 1850,showing an increase of $15.000 over last year—a gain of nearly eighty per cent. ‘The earnings of the Housatonic Railroad Company for April, this year, were $21,905 41, against $17,317 37 for the corresponding month last year, showing an increase of $3.988(04 for the month this year—equal to about twen- ty-eight per cent. The recvipts of this road are de- rived entirely from its local travel. ‘The total cost of the Concord and Claremont railroad is $500,624 43. Capital paid in, say $206,031"75. Funded debt, payable in 1555, $100,000. Floating debt, $150,000. The balance of the cost has been furnished by the earn- joes of the road, &e.,&c, The Concord and Claremont is between twenty-nine and thirty miles long, and is said to be well equipped inevery respect. Its net earnings since its opening in September, 1849, to May 1, 1851, have been $26,738 71, or $1,740 23 more than the aggregate interest upon the whole amount actually expended in construction. This fact should be very encouraging to the stockholders, who are now called upon to take care of the floating debt of the corporation. It is evident that the road would pay good dividends, if it could wipe off its floating Mabilities. The investigating committee appointed at the last annual meeting, speak highly of the condition of the road and its equipment, and of the prudence and system pursued in the management, It appears, also, that the Concord and Claremont has cost but one halfas much as the Sullivan, which is a mile ahort- ef, and $900,000 leas than the Manchester and Lawrence, which is of equal length to the Concord and Claremont. Considering the length of the main and side tracks, the cost of depots and equipments, it is believed that the last named road is cheaper than any other in New Hampshire he Harry, 8.
