The Mexican Claims—The Anticipated Investiga- tion, &c. ‘The excitement and indignation with regard to the awards by the Board of Claims against Mexico, are in nowise abated, and there is no doubt but what the whole matter will be thoroughly probed | by Congress at its next meeting. If some of the developements which will then be made do not make | people starg, jt will be because they do not regard anything as miraculous in this wonderful age. But it must be understood that I desire to cast no reflections upon the members of the Board; neither do I wish to be considered as their advocate. They will be called upon to defend themselves, aud it will be time enough to take one side or the other after they are heard. They have boon obliged to decide cases upon the evidence before them; and, although they might well doubt the credibility of some of the stories, yet, when daly authenticated evidence was produced, sworn to by ties in Mexizo, and the credibility and respocta- ility of these parties endorsed by She Mexican Blintter here, under the seal of the Lerma their doubts had to be laid aside, and the validity of the claim allowed. It is understood, however, that they have kept a minute private journal of all their nsactions, and are fully prepared forthe pet rigid ecrutiny into their acts. For their own racter, and to satisfy the public, the investigation must be had. Allusion has been made to the members of Con- gress who have been engaged as counsel in prose- cuting claims before this voard. Upon reference to the record, I find that the following comprise all the members who were euch whon acting as coun- sel:— Hon. Jesse D. Bright, Senator from Indiana, was engaged in four cases, aggregatin 133 on. Volney E. Howard, member of Congress from Texas, was engaged in two Cases, both of which were rejected. Hon. Andrew Ewing, of Tennessee, one rejected case. Hon. Tho Corwin, whilst U. S. Senator from } Ohio, was eg in two casee, which were allow- i850, and March 12, 1890—aggre- Before ed—January pting a seat in the cases he had, over to other parties. Lis nephew, I believe, became interested in seven, three of which were rejected; so that Mr. Corvin’s position in the cabinet appears to have had a very poor effect, so _ asthe success of the claims was con- cerned. In fuct, it affords the best evidenoe that the charges against him, in this connection, were made without proper information in the premises. The statement that Mr. Webster was interested in any of the award? is a mistake. Some six or seven years ago he was engaged to draw up au ar- gument in favor ofthe cluun of the Land Company, und this is all the interest he has ever had in any of the claims—an interest which ceased whea he drew up the argument. Several ex-members of Congress were engaged ag, counsel—Mr. Rockwell, of Connecticut ; Gov. | Marcy, and one or two others. ‘The assertion that complaint bas beon made that the Secretary of the Treasury is paying fees of the | counsel in the awards, and withholding the princi- pal, is also an error. Tho Secretary has not in- terfered in the matter. If any such stoppage has | been made, it has been done by Comptroiler Whit- tlesey, in accordance with a long standing rule of his office. Our Philadelphia Correspondence. Paitapenria, May 23, 1851. Another Whig Meeting—A Dudlist in Limbo—im- portant Decision—A New Host inthe United » Se. oy. Johnston met with rather a chilly reception, last evening, at the meeting in the third district, which was quite a contrast tothe warm time the whigs hadof it the night before. The number in attendance was large, but the enthusiasm was wai ing to render the affair effective. A cordwainer of ardent temperament, rejoicing | in the name of William Edward Henry Cotten, con- ceiving himeelf wounded in the tenderest point, by a rival weaning away the affections of his lady love, sent a hostile missive to that fortunate indivi- dual, a few days since. The pleasure of meeting him in New Jersey was requested at any time that euitea his couvenience, for a deadly encounter, with either pistol or small swords. Failing to do this, the challenger vowed he would have him cow- hided in the public streets. The challen, party not having much faith in the popping or the thrusting of small swords, for the t of private grievances, laid the oase be- beaded challenger arrested. This diverted the rising feelings of wrath for a short time, and the press, which some, however, ventured jte defend, came in for an attack by way of episode—in the course of which Alderman Smith said it might not be altogether agreeable to some gentlemen to hive thelr votes paraded in the papers before their consti- tuents. ‘The Mayor caid they bad that evening had two houre da half proceedings, and the ayes and nays had been taken seven or eight times, and it would be impossible to report all these divisions.
