City Intelligence Arnii-Foot. Day.—The month of April, of which this is the first day, consecrated to “ All Fools,” derives its name from the Latin Aprilis, from aperio, to apen, because the earth, in thiy mouth, begins to opm her bosom for the production of flowers, fruits, and vegetables, It is in this month that the feathered songsters make every copse, and tree, and bush voeal with their melody. The first of April is called April-fvol day, from the practice of playing Jokes and de- upon children, or simple people. ‘The custom ils in England, Ireland, Scotland, France, and also n this country. The Brench call the:fool poisson d’.Avril, a name which beat Derg give to the mackerel, a silly fish that is casily caught in large numbers during this season. Th England, the custom is probably borrowed from: France. It cannot, at all events, be yery old there, ax no writer so far back as the time of Queen Elizabeth makes mention of it. In Scotland it is termed * hanting the gowk,” and applied to a simpleton who is sent on a pre- tended errand with a letter, in which is written “On the first day of April Hunt the gowk another mile." No doubt the number of practical jokes played on the unwary, to-day, in New York, will be very considerable, Among the ancient Romans, a day is marked in their calendar as dedicated to fools—dirs stiltorum. Once every | year, « festival was held in honor of the goddess Fornax, who taught the mystery of making bread. On the day of celebration, tablets were suspended round the forum, dirceting the people to what temples they were to repair; and the joke consisted in calling those persons fuols who could not read the labels, and who were, therefore, pre- | vented from resorting to the place of entertainment till it was too late to share in the festivity.
