Our Boston Correspondence, Boston, Mareh 14, 1851. The Senatorship—Demycratrc Quarrel inthe House --Whig “Reforms” in Ofice—The New Hamp- shire Election. The defeat of Mr. Sumuer, on Wednesday last, by four times the majority that was cast against him a fortnight before, will probably turn out bene ficially for the coalition, though it was generally | thought that it would be followed bya complete | break-down of the party which has thus far so per- tinaciously supported him. The cause of the in- | creased majority against Mr. Sumner isto be found | in these facts: five democrate, who bave hereto- fore voted for him, withhe id tneir ballots from him, and scattered them; ove other regularly fled the field; and report says that Mr. Mills, one of the principal free soilers in the State, also voted against him. Mr. Mills is supposed to have been influ- enced by Marcus Morton, who has written a letter in opposition to the election of Mr. Summer, and who has verbaliy opposed nim, on the ground of his not being a sound o:tnvdox Chris! Sumner is a Unitarian, and Mr. Morton has taken the interests of heaven uuder his care, just as.Mr. Perceval did inthe Brtisu House of Commons. ‘The whigs and old line democrats were beaten on the question of posipoumg another ballotiag for Senator fer a monih, aud the coalition carrie their point, which was to have another trial in @ week, on which day, it is coufideatly expected by many of their number, that au election of sdme- body will be had. ‘The ballotings were followed by a fiery debate, in the course ot which open war was ieciared, and some ‘bitter bad words” passed between General Cushing and Mr. Branniug, the leaders, respectively, in tne House, or ine old line demo- crats, and the “new g-ueratioa” that has sprung . Branning wae very severe, at the expense of the G General, aud the latier was by no ineans backward in supporting his side of the questi But it wae very plain to aii iutelligemt ooservers that the feelings of the great mass of the demo- cratic members were enurety with Mr. Branniag. Even some of the nuuker democrats do not much fancy being told the best way of performing their duty by a gentleman wav, however abie and learned, is 8o fresh from the whig camp, and who was, but a short time ago, as conspicuous in op- posing democracy as he is wow zealous in uphold- ing its purity. He is figuaug against great odds am the House, and nine-tenihe vo} ine democratic party out ef doors dissent frou ms views of policy at the nt time. Demoerais r gard him rather as @ We beter man than as oue o; their leaders. in thig case, as in all others, the duttle will be to the strong. The whigs are in a precious condiion here, and at is expecied that there wiil be more strikiag de- velopements in a few days, that will ratheras toniah our national otiice-nolders. Ihave i from , an eminent meinber ot Congress that Mr. Ashmua will soon be appointed w the Collectorship of Botton. Mr. Greely, the present Collector, is at the bottom of the receat persoual attacks made on Mr. Webster, and a proper regard for justice would seem to demand his immediae removal. To keep nim 10 high office 1s to simply endorse the ch srges that have been made agaiast Mr. Webster’s in- teariy, an opimion which prevails here among all Wei ‘bster’s friends, who ure naturally very im- dignant at seeing national officers warring against their great leader, on is also the greates! intellect of the ee ey. Mr. Greely possesses uo par- ticular qui cations for the place he now polde, and his removal, and the appointmeat of Mr. Ashmun, would be by no means an unpopular thin; in this region. There are reasons, which you i ur readers can easily divine, tor not appoiating ietcher Webster to the office, under exisumg cir- cumstances. The Laily Bee, one of the whig orgens, has come out in favor of the removal of Mr. Greely, and has attacked that gentleman with agreat deal of vigor. The Atias, which has been anti-Wed- ster ever since the Secretary of State took ground against the abolition spate, defends and 4 hoics the Collector. ne current of opiaion with the Bee, however; aad, as Mr. Greely hag cho- sen .0 keep eome very obuoxwwus adoitionists inof- fice, and as our city 1s said to be likely to suffer ve severely from the withdrawal of businege from by Southern traders, ou the supposition that it ie@ mere nest of Garrisonites, busimess mea think that itis time that some coaservative demonstrations of a practical character were made. Resolutions in Faneuil Hall, they aay, are mere gas. Exan- ples should be made of the inceadiaries; not of the poor devils of negroes, but of m-n who abuse their official stations io keep up the anti slavery agita- tion, and who libel all men that become conspicucas by their advocacy of peace-restoring measures. It will be a very trying time to some ot oar whigs, if the administration should commence weeding the abolititionists out of the offices Should tn not **bolt,” they will act im the teeth of ali their professions and declarations; should they do so, then there must be an end to all their hopes of de- ling the coalition nexi fall. Jt will be a very sight to democrats and free soilers, aad avery graterul one to the conservative portion of the whig party, to see the Atas, and some of the whig country jouraals of the ition stump, whipped into the support of waat, in their hearts, they would call proscription ‘he result of the New Hamphshire election was by no means unexpected. The balance of power 13 held, as well in the Legislature asim the State at large, by the Atwood men, composed of free soilers and democrats. Either Mr. Lawyer or Mr. Dinsmore will be chosea Goveraor by the L: lature; and it is hardly poesible that the friends of Mr. Atwood will support the latter, when we con- sider that he was placed in the field for the purposs of crushing their leader. The opposition to the regular democracy everywhere coalesced, = much more thoroughly than was done ia State last fall; for here the anh parties supported different candidates for members of . one by @ union on the same men, they woul cong Be clng carried five or six members: of tl tes House of Representatives, The t abolition whigs, ‘Luck and Perkins, owe their election entirely to the Atwood moveme: for that they would have both been defeated. So much for foolish letter writiog and arrogant dicra- tion. The learned politiicians haye mistaken the age altogether. The time was when their dicta- tion \was eos tu effect any desred end ; but the day has forever gone by when they could play the part of Roman ceuturions. ‘e ure to have an election for members of Coa- gress, to fill the vacancies now existing in several of our districts, in about three weeks. [he whi will probably,” in the end, have ~~ district the State, except the fourth and the fth, witha reasonable good chance for the former—that is, alwa’ upposing that they can ws ~ to keep from quarreling athe themselves ree soiler will be elected in the hitth district before the neat meeting of Congress. It will be Mr. Allen, aaless his presence in another place should be found aeces- sary. [t was at one time thought that Mr ntoul might be elected in the second district; bat any sueh result there is now scarcely withia the bounds of poesibility. His prospects would have been be had he not be: on sent to the Senate Numor eave that there is to be a clean sweep of the whig State officers as soon as the Senatorial question shall have been disposed of The demo- cr «i free soilers say that thie will be an im provement in the present state of affairs. The oyster war has been brought to a glorione termination, and the steamer Herald returned yee_ terday from the ecene of conflict, covered all ove, with glory. The price of real estate in Ti ultimore is rismg to an unprecedented extent. There were sales yes terday of 1,900 front feet oa Fall’s avenue, the aggregate of the sale of which amounted to $128,000. A few days previous a large number of building lots were soli at five times their original coat, venting in the aggregste to over $100,000, Parodi made her first appearance, last night, in the saloon of the new Asssem ly Rooms, and had A most wor vege compriving the fash’ rand iin at Casta by fy storm; indeed, the eathmriasm could se be controlled, and fally equalled that exeited by Jonny Lind in her most popular air, the bird song,
