This is the estimates of May, 1845. ‘The next full and deteilod report of the affairs of thie company was put forth in Mareh, 1849, at the time the loan of $4,600,100 was solicited, for which second mortgage bonde were to be issued. By this report we find that the ertimated cost has increased very much: It is in this report put down at $16,000,000. And, say the directors, ‘the above estimate is de 4 large, and is bared upon recent surveys and estimates made un- der the direction of the chief engineer;” and, “from the fact that the cort of pubilo works has very gener- ally exceeded their original estimates, the public have im consequence become distrustful of their eorrectness. It has therefore been determined in this In February, 1860, we find another report from the directors. The public were then solicited to take $3,- 900,600 of income bonds, and are assured that no more meney will be required to complete the work; Dut we must observe, that in thie report the entire cost of the road is estimated at $17,178,000—exoeeding the estimate of the year previous, $1,173,000. We are now, in February, 1851, presented with another report; a new loan of $3,600,000 is golicited to poy s floating debt of about $3,000,000, already in- eurred. No allusion is made, in this present one, to the report of the year previous, in which the stock- holders are informed that the money obtained from the sale of income bonds will complete the road, and the then estimate of the total cust of road and equip- mentr, $17,178,000; but they are now told that the estimate has been swelled to $20,500,000, being $3,222,000 more than the estimate of one year ago; and they are told that that amount ras already been expended upon the work, the loan at present proposed being for the purpose of funding the floating debt. What the future estimates of the directors may be, we eannot tell; but we presume that that good, easy soul, the public, will place the most implicit reliance on each of their statements in turn, as they may be put forth, when more money may be wanted. The Delaware and Hudson Canal Company have given notice that they will pass boats, during the ap- proaching season of navigation, of the eapacity of 106 tons, and that the freight for deli vering coal from Honesdale to New York will range from $1 11 to $1 15 perton. The expence of transporting over the rail- road from Carbondale to Honesdale, is about thirty-five cents per ton, making the whole expense, for freight, from Honesdale to New York, $1 60.
