The G and Celebration 'To-Day: Hf the weather, to-day, be favorable, there is no | doubt but that the celebration of the anniversary ef Washington’s birthday will be one of the | grendest and moztimposing demonstrations that was ever witneesed in the city of New York, distinguivhed as it is for doing such things in hand- some style. The procession will be very extensive; a magniti- cent illuminated portrait of General Washiagton, and several transparencies of the battles of the re- volution will be exhibited on the City Hall during the evening, and the day will be wound up with an entertainment at Niblo's Garden, at which a table will be eet fit forthe occasion. The literary exer- cises will be very entertaining. The Hon Mr Foote, cf{the United $ enate, will deliver the oration, and Case, Clay, Webster, Dickineon end other gentleraen be not present, letters from those distinguished statesmen, ac- counting for their absence, will be read. The immortal Washington directed the atteation of his countrymen to the evils which would befall the United States in case sectional jealousies orgeo- graphical distinctions were allowed to exist. He pictured the desolation and destruction that would follow in case Americanism gave way to faction- jem; and it was his advice, iterated and reiterated by our American patriots of both parties in the halls of Congress, during the last session, which tended more than any thiag else to avert the dan- ger which was then imminen The name of Washington is talismanic through- out the United States Ia times of danger and difficulty, his pstience, moderation, firmaess and patriotiem are eppealed to, and not without success. Leng may his memory be reverenced, end long may the Ameri teachings tions of € if Messrs. as those of a patriot whom all the temptas rth could not seduce Important frem Washington. Our telegrap atches this moraing will be found unusually importent and exciting. The message of President Fillmore communicated to the Senate yesterday, ia response to Mr. Clay’s resolution, the recent instance of for, cible retistan negroes and abolitioniate to the lews end au i¢s of the United States, and the debate which followed the reading of the meteege, will be found fully reported. The sla- very excitement, we are sorry io sa) pear to heve broken out afresh, and we greatly fear that it mey eontinue till (he end of the session The lateness of the hour compels us to forego comment upon thes re this morniag. Exzction or Coumor Srockto* To Tum Srares Seuate —It will be observed by telegraphic despatch, t Commo F Stock:on, after m. otracted ball 8, is elect. ed to the United States Senate, to succeed He Williem L. Dayton, whig, whose term expires on yhe 3d of March next is curious to observe the preference that is given by both parties to mem bers of femilies of the old federal party stock when United States senators are to be chosen Thus we have Commodore Stockton, from New Jersey, ond James A. Bayard, from Delawere, aad Attemp!s making in Massachusetts to elect Mr Charles Sum: t Hon. Robert C. Winthrop, «nd im this State, Hon. Hamilton Fish—all these gen tlemen being originally of the old federal party, or | of federal parentege Commodore Robert ! the late Richard Stockt the leading member of e'd Stockton is the son of mn, who was, while living, he New Jersey bar. In early life the father wae elected to the United States Senate, and during the war of 1812 repre- sented one of the districts of the State in the House of Representatives e was distinguished for legal ability and learning, and was one of the most forcible and finished orators. He was a de- @ided federelist, and took part in the debates in Congrese. On one occasion, being attacked in de- bate by Charlee J. lagersell, then a democratic member trom Philadelphia, and accused by that gentleman of want of patriotiem, in opposing the war, Mr. Stockton replied in terms of great elo- quence, and alluded to his sons then employed in he service of their country, one of whom is now the Senator elect. The father of Richard Stockton, and grandfather of the Commodore, was Judge Richard Stockton, one of the signera of the Deelaration of Indepen- dence, and a gentleman of learning aad ability Com. Stockton has, since 1824, been active in politice. He firet supported John Quincy Adams for the Presidency. A vacancy occurred in the United States District Court of New Jersey, during Mr. Adems' admin stration, to which it was ex- pected Mr. Kichard Stockton would have been se- lected; but Mr. Southard, then Secretary of the Navy, favored the appointinent of Mr. Ruasell, who was therefore made District Judge by President Adams, much to the dissatisfaction ot the old fede- raliste of New Jersey, and the Stockton family in particular. Many of ‘the Nuw Jersey federalists afterwards supported Gen. Jackson and this admi- nistration In 1840, Commodore Stockton advocated the election of Harrison and Tyler, and made strong speeches against the conduct of the democratic party in the celebrated broad seal case, in which it will be recollected that the whig candidates for Congress, who received the broad seal of the State, as deciared elected, were refused their seats, by the democratic party, in the House of Kepre- sentatives. We do not know whether the Com. Modore supported Mr. Polk at the Presidential | election of 1844. Just before the war with Mexico, | be wes sea! to the Pagific, by Mr. Bancroft, then people coatinue to look to his | Secretary of the Navy, to command the squadron there, ce he greatly aided Colonel Fremont in the conquest of California. When superseded, he came home across t1e mountains, Om horseback. Within a few months past, he has resigned hie commission of Post Captain in the navy. The principal opposition to the election of Commodore Stockton to the United States Senate, among the democrats, arose from his connexion 44,86 | with the Camden and Amboy Railroad, and Rari- tan Canal Company, he being a !arge stockholder in that monopoly, so called. But, on the other hand, he has doubtless received great aid from the influence always exercised and felt from that concern, wielding a capital of six or seven milliona of dollars. Fatuer Ritcum anp THE Pustic Paintina.— The House having re-committed the case of Father Ritchie, with instructions to report the actual cost of the work he has executed for Con- gress, the amount of his pay under his contract, and the exact amount of his loss, the question arises, what is to become of Father Ritchie? Will the Committee report any loss, or will they report at all this session? Father Ritchie repeats it, day after day, with tears in his eyes, that he is dead broke by that contract, and pleads lustily that the House do not act the part of Shylock, with his carving knife and his scales. He does not expect any mercy—that i is past praying for. All he asks is justice. We hope it will be allowed him, end something extra, rather than see the venerable editor, from his own folly, compelled to pay @ ruinous part of the expenses of the public printing out of his own pocket. He ought not to be sent back to “ old Virginia” a bankrupt on pub- lie account. The previous printers to Congress, for thirty years past, have uniformly received their largesses, their extra allowances, to the amount of thousands upon thousands, and hundreds of thousands. Why make fish of one and flesh of the other? The committee should, at least, bring in their report, and make up the bona fide losses of the pedre’s contract. The Morris and Essex Railroad Company intend to put the extension of their road as fares Belvidere under contract immediately. We learn that the bill authorizing the city of La- tayette to subscribe $150.000 to the Lafayette and In- dianapolas Railréad, pacsed the Legislature of Indiana just previous to adjournment. This gives the company additional resources, in the event of requiring them. Judging from the character and reputation of the gen- tlemen who have been appointed trustees of the mort- gage executed ter the security of the bonds to be rold at auction. at the Merchants’s Exchange.on Thurs- day next, we should think it was one of the safest in- vestments on the market. The Hon, A. 8. White, of Lafayette, the President of the company, was formerly a member of Congrees, is a gentleman of high character and excellent business habits, and the direc- tion exercise the most prudemteconomy in the ex- penditureof money. The iron, ptyment fer which is to be made from the proceeds of the bonds about tobe sold, is of the bert kind, filty-three pounds to the yard, and will soon arrive. Itis expected the road will be completed, so as to be ready for the fall trade and transportation of produce. There probably is not a road in the whole western country, more favorably located than thie, or the gross earnings of which will be greater, in proportion to its length and aggre- gate cost. It is integral part of two trunk lines, which, proceeding from Louisville and Cincin pati, meet at Indianapolis, and thence crossing ths Wabash river at Lafayette (the head of steamboat na- vigation,) will proceed in @ rizht line to Chicago and the great Northwest. From Madison, intermediate to Louisville and Cincinnati, the road is already built, and in successful operation to Indianspolis—86 miles— andthe Louisville and Cincinosti lines are fast vancing.
