Justice is slow but sure. JONATHAN WILD, the Youager, rrange- tart thither by 9 MONEY MARKET. Batunvay, Feb. 15—6 P. M. The stock market opened a li:tie heavy this mora- ing; but no more so than might have been expected after the improvement of the previous two days. The causes which have been at work to depress price, not entirely passed away, and we must be pre- pared for occarional reactions in the market. It will, without doubt, be some time before speculation will again become so extended as it has been for some- time past; but it must be borne in mind that most o’ the fancies have fallen off a large per cent—that ope- rators are looking for the usual spring rise—that money is not only plenty, but daily becom'ms more abun- dant—and, more than all these, that there are stocks on the liet cheap enough to purchase at present prio It would not do for speculators to enter the market and take hold of the fancies promiscuously, as there are many dangerous to touch, at any price. By juli- cious selection, there is very little risk in operating for a rise, and money will be made on the leading railroad stocks, at current rates. Morris Canal, Long Island Canton Com pany, and Erie Railroad stock, are very un- certain securities to touch, and it would be better to let them alone. Harlem, Norwich, Portsmouth Dry Dock, Edgeworth Company, and Stonington Railroad bonds of all kinds, are safe purchases at present prices Go- vernment and State stocks are too high to purchase for investm or om speculation. There are several stocks we have omitted, because at presemv their posi- tion is rather equivocal, and the course they are likely to take, doubtful. Something definite may transpire jn a few days, when we shall be able to tell more about them. Another speculative movement will, without doubt, be confined principally to the stocks we have named above as having a margin for a rise, and trans, actions within the past fewdays show that they are favorites with speculators. At the first board to-day, Erie Income bonds declined 3; per cent; Edgewerth Company, {; Morris Canal, {; Portsmouth Dry Dock, ‘4; Farmers’ Loan, %; Norwich and Worcester, \; Reading Railroad, 34; Stonington, 4 ; Erie Railroad, 34. Canton Company advanced 1}¢ per cent; Mohawk 1%; New Jersey Mining Company closed at yesterday's prices. When this etock is better known it will com- mand better prices. Harlem was quite active to-day, and closed firm, The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port, to-day, amounted to $76,253 34; drafts paid, $56,614 61; mint certificates paid, $972,974. Balanse on band, including mint certificates, $4,578,986 69. The amount of coal transported on the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, during the week ending the 13th inst., was 12865 tons. Total this year, 254692 tons; same time last year, 145,188 tons; increase this year, 139,384 tons. It was state: day or two since, that a bill had pased the legislature of Virginia, authorizing a sub- scription, by the State, of two-fifths of $800,000 to the Manarras Gap Reilroad Company. We now learn from the Alexandria Gazette, that the company has con- tracted with Mr. James Dunlap, ef Petersburg sgent for the manufacturers in W: for the delivery at Alexandria of 2,750 tons of railroad iron. The rail® are to be of the T pattern, similar to those on the Read- ing railread, fifty.two pounds to the yard, and to be 0, the best quality The surveys, heretofore ordered to bs made, have been completed to the top of the Ridge, and the chief engineer has been ordered to proceed forth- with with the surveys to Harrisonburg. Thirty-two miles of the road are now under contract, and the re- mainder, to the top of the Ridge, will be contracted for by the 25th inst. The people of Petersburg, Va., have decided that the city, in its corporate capacity, should make am addi- tional subscription of $200,000 to the stook of the South Bide Railroad Company. The road will be 84 miles long, and will cost $1,680,000. A committee was ap- painted to draw up articles of association. The directors of the Hudson River Railroad Com- pany have recently concladed an arrangement by which they secure the entire control of the Troy and Greenbush Railroad, which they design to connect with their own,and thus not only reap the benefit from the great Western lines which terminate at Al- Dany, but also to reach the termination of the Nortn- ern lines which terminate at Troy. By this arrar, ment a continuous northern line will be formed from New York city to Burlington, Vt., and when the Iud- ton River road is finished, « person may leave the city in the morning and retire to rest in Burlington at an early hour the same evening.
