Beveral causes combined to produoe this result-among them may be named the extension of the railroad from Jack’ on, fourteen miles eastward, to Urandon—thus bringing the Vickebarg ootton that in former years went down the Tombigbee to Mobiie—and the establishment of a branch road to Raymond, in Hinds county, throwing on the Vioks burg road cotton that previously reached the Missis sippi at Grand Gulf; but the chief cause of the in- erease of raijroad cotton at Vicksburg, was the extreme Gronght im Beptember, October, and November, by which the planters wore enabled to make heavy picking in thore months; and the bigh prices oreating & desire te realise, cotton was hurried forward by the only route practicable, the rivers not being navigable, from the same cause that promcted full pioking—the long continued drought.
