~ ‘Goubt, be realized by am advance in the market value of the stock. The landed property of the Canton Company is: tmereasing in value, but as it declares no nda, {t is notfe very active stock, and has not the, ‘dasis for» speculative movement of much importance. Portsmouth Dry Dock has been quiet for some days, Dut holders are by no means disposed to realize. It ‘will be one of the most active stocks on the list, upon the opening of the spring. as the margin for a rise is probably greater thanjin any other small stock on the market, Holders know this, and govern themselves accordingly. ‘The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port, to-day, amounted to $62,033; payments. $8,028 79—Balance, $3,116,232 67, This balance will ‘be largely reduced on the 2d of January, 1851, by the ‘psyment of interest on the government debt. Interest @ividends, January Ist. 1861, $1,105,584 14; coupons Mo, $280,000-—Total, $1,325,584 14. ‘The Broadyay insurance Company have declared a @ividend of eight per cent. ‘The Tradesmens’ Bank has declared a dividend of three dollars per share. ‘The Chemical Bank has declared = dividend of six per cent. ‘The receipts on the Columbia and Philadelphia Rail- road; for the year ending Nov. 80, 1850, were $638,289 25; expenses, $265,072 it earnings, $362,895 45— @qual to over nine per cent on $4,000,000, the original cost of the road and machinery. The road belongs to the Btate of Pennsylvania. The Lebanon Courier says:—“We understand that the President of the Reading Railroad Company has wabscribed for four thourand shares of the stock of the Lebanon Valiey Railroad, thus securing the charter from arepeal by the Legislature. We trust now soon to see the enterprise under contract. Its advantages become more appsrent the more its merits are can- vanced; and we believe it will be the best paying por- tion of aroadinthe Union, It is the natural route for connecting the Hast and the West, and must be the thoroughfare for « great portion of the gigantic trade ‘which will come and go over the Central road. With the termination of the Central road at its beginning, ‘and intersecting the Reading road at the favorable point of Reading, it forms a connecting link, which murt be advantageous and profitable. A new route for a chain of railroads from New York eity to lakes Ontario and Brie, which will save in dis- tance about one hundred miles of the precent routes promises to attract much attention as soon a6 its advantages become generally known. The route proposed, the priveipal proportion of which is ‘Row in progress, passes over the Morri: road in New Jetsey, to the Delaware river. corner of Pennsylvania to From Jersey tothe Delaware Water Gap, via beac town—mil 80 Delaware Water Gap to Scrantonia, Scrantonia to Owego. Jeffereon to Geneva, through Beneos Lak oe 223, Total—New York to Gemevaieeseeeeceeeceee 0ST It will be noticed that the new route is 102 miles lees than the Albany route to Geneva, and 95 miles Jess than the route to the same place via the Erie Railrond, which is now the preferred route to Geneva, Rochester, Buffalo, and places further west. The new route is certain to be completed soon, 110 miles being already in operation, and only 93 miles.in process of construc. ‘Hen, being necessary to connect the route with the eentral line by both the Cayuga and the Seneca Lakes. It will crors the Erie Railroad near Cwego. All the different roads, forming the line, are, we learn, to be of the seme width as the Erie Railroad, which is about One foot and four inches wider than the railroads from Albany to Buffalo, The now route passes near the llac of the old Milford and Owego turnpike, by which the distance was 170 miles from New York to Owego. The following are the distances to Owego, Genova, and Buf- falo, trom New York, by the stage route formerly tra- velled over the Milford and Owego turnpike : —- Dany, was 449 miles. ‘The preliminary steps have been taken for the con- struction of a railroad from Geneva to Ithaca, between Beneoa and Cayuga lakes, te connect with the Cayu. @& and Busquebanna road, from Ithaca to Owego, which has been for some years past in operation, This road is being extended from Owego to the Lackawan- ‘ms coal beds at Serantonia, and is known as the‘ Leg- gett’sGap” railroad. On the latter road there are now 2,000 men at work, and it is intended to be com- pleted next season, including the tunnelling of the . to the Delaware river.
