many years, ene of the most important in the Wester, Btates. The stock is in the hands of very strong par thee here, who have purchased it for permanent invest- ‘ment, in « quiet way, 90 as to avoid creating any ex- eitement. The stock of the Edgeworth Land Company, which is held principally in Boston, has advanced very much within the past week or two. The amount of coal transported on the Reading Railroad, during the week ending the 28th of Novem- ber, was 58,682 tons. Total, this year, 1,985,506 toms, against 1,093,823 tons to the same time last year. The suspension of so many of our do- mestic manufactories may create @ vacuum that will have to be filled with foreign fabrics; but it is our im- pression that our own manufacturers will resume epe- rations again the moment they can make it profitable enough.so to do, When our manufacturers talk about doing ruined, it may be taken for granted that they are making handsome profits ; and when they admit that they are net realizing losses every day they contin’ operation, it may be taken for granted that they are coining money. As a class. they are # set of grumblers and are continually complaining that they are not suf- ficiently protected. The rapid increase of manufac- tories at the South, while those at the North are whol- ly or partially suspending, speaks volumes in favor of the advantages enjoyed by Southerners in this depart- ment of industry. W ve seen several long lists of Inctories in the New England Btates which have whol- fy or partially suspended operations within the past ix or eight months, aceompanied with the assertion that the cause of their suspension was the operation of the tariff of 1846. The object of this undoubtedly was to create political capital, and influence Congress in re- lation to the tariff. Such thffigs have very little effect in Washington, and it will require stronger arguments than theee to bring about any modification in the act of 1846. ADVERTISEMENTS RENEWED EVERY DAY.
