NEWS BY THE MAIL Our Washington Correspondence. Wasuinoton, November 18, 1850. The Contoy Prisoners— England and Spain— More Indemnity Demands—Cuba—Extensive Frauds —Captain Hunter, $<. ‘When Spain acted so summarily in the Contoy ease, she relied upon Great Britain to sustain her. However, England withholds her approbation from this, while she justifies the proceedings grow- img out of the invasion of Cardenas by Gea- eral HanibaP Cwear Lopez, and thinks that they were authorized by the laws of nations. If ‘we remember correctly, four or five of the Contoy ptisoners were sentenced to be transported, and condemned to hard labor in the galleys, for years. We do dot believe that Spain has relented; but it may be in view of the British opinion of the affair, and the known protestauons of our own govern- ment, that the Spauish government intends to re- lease these prisoners trom their sentences, and set them free. This will be good news, especially to the relatives of these unfortunate men. ‘The act of release will amount to an admission that the sentence of the Spanish authorities was wrong, and hence we will shortly hear of the own- ers of the vessels which were seized, claiming in- demnity of that goverument. A gentlemen tiom the South, whom we believe to be well informed in relanon to Cuban affairs, informs us that there are, to fis positive know- ledge, enxious adventurers enough in the neighdor- hood of Vickeburgh, on une Mississippi, to couquer the Islend; but they are so closely watched by agents of the geueral goveroment, that they have no pevertunity, such a8 they desire, to carry out their plans = [tis thought that if they can be |held in check for a short ume longer, ‘the geldew pe- ied” will have passed, as @ tleet from the mother ouptry Will soon wrrive (o prowet the Antillas. Second Appearance of Thompson, the Aboll- Uowist, in Boston, (From the boston Times, November 19.) Last evening, iu pursu. of announcement, @ meciing of uburitionists, colored people, d&e., was held m the Belkuap street chareh, with a view to tender a formal welcome wo George Thompson The accon: ations of the house were such us not to admit more than five hundred people, about which number were present. The police were marshalled to the place by Francis Tukey, Esq, and took positions to preveut, or to suppress any disturbance that might be attempted A chain was drawn across the entrance to the court, aud when the house became filled, those who came after were kept without the lines; but these were very few, and so fur from excitement or disturbance, quiet eo throughout the evening. ‘he nudience consisted of whites and blacks of both sexes, and probably three-fifths if not two- thirds were of the colored populanon. The “ban- ners of freedom” draped the galleries. . T. Hilton (colored) presided, and Rev. Mr. Colver opened with a prayer. Mr. Hilton made some remarks ujen the object of the meeting, and upon the subject of slavery m this country, and then introouce’ Mr Kemend, a colored gent eman who bad held compamenship with Mr, Thompsva in the kingdom of Great Britein, in disseminating mines of universal liberty. ‘Mr. Remond, ia the course of his remarks, enumerated the names of James Gordon Bennett, Dickens, Matthews, and who came here from foreign ally asked why a tumult had not been rained against them by “the mob,” as well as against George Thompson sM P. After some fur- ther remarks, he, in the name of the oppressed, extended the mght hand of fellowshipand welcome to George Thompson. [Here followed three cheere—then hisees—and then anotner dose o cheers } Thompeon aroee, and was greeted with cheers, and when these were dying away a few hisses were heard. He remarked that the audience could give their welcome to no one who loved their cause better, or who could more deeply feel that welcome. He alluded to his somewhat clandes- tine departure trom Boston seme fifteen years since; but he had lived in America more than in any other one country of the globe, and more in Boston than in any other place in America. [The speaker's address was in manuscript, from which he read.] He took oceasion to go into a history of the progress of slavery and the slave trade, and their decline (Cries of * Fall back there!” “O gorry, my sopper!” “*Oogh!” “We'll hab order, for we have got de perierce!” ** Trow dat boy out!” All right egain.
