The transactions were large, and buyers were plenty at current rates. After the first board, the market was heavy, and the bears came torward in great toree to depress prices, and partially succeeded. ‘The recéipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port, to-day, amounted to $78,994 75; payments, $19,475 balance, $4,202,601 49. There were shipped on the Lehigh canal, last week, 24.752 tons; previously, 584,086 tons—total, 680,889 tons. The receipts of the Hudson and Berkshire Railroad Company for September and October, 1850, amounted to $9,800 against $7,249 for the same period last year, showing s gain, this year, of $2,651, equal to 8634 per cent. ‘The Macon and Western Railroad Company earned in October, 1850, $20,108 99. ‘The depreciation in the market value ef the stock of the Boston and Maine Railroad Company, was but tem- porary. The panic among holders of the stock, caused by the late fire, has nearly subsided, and prices will soon be back to the old points. The following particu- lars respecting the corporation, are from the report to the Legislature, in January last, and the President's report to the stockholders, dated 11th September, 1850: $204,408 54 | Deduct extra for loss of bridge andcershop 53,491 19 $240,917 35 Dividend paid on 85,563 shs., at 534 per ot, 195,624 00 oars: stock increased sins _ The President’s report to the stockholders, dated September 11, 1850, contains the following passage :— “On the whole, it may be stated that unless some traordinary casualty befalls us, the value of the pro- perty may be sustained, by a yearly outlay no greater than has been disbursed the last year. But to provide for s liability of this sort, it is certainly the part of prudence, and has been the policy of the board of directors, to increase moderately the reserved fund, which now amounts to the sum of $53,463, and is in- vested in wood, and stock on hand. The increase on the net earnings of the road, for the nine months of this year, over the corresponding period of last year, #0 far as it may be compared, by a different mede of keeping the accounts, is $62,957, but it must be re- | membered that the capital has been increased by the | sam of $600,000; this, however, is neutralized to some extent by saving of interest.” ‘The above exhibit is certainly favorable, and it is now estimated that the net loss to the corporation by the late fire, will not exceed the sum of $75,000. Our Philadelphia Correspondence. Puapetruta, Nov. 9. 1850. The Explosion of the Steamer Tolegraph—Fur- ther Particulars—Death of Ale Graen—Elope- ment, §c. The late horrible disaster on our river is still the topic of conversation, but as there has as yet been no investigation into the cause, the public are at sea in regard to who the censure should be thrown upen. Neglect there must have been somewhere. An examination of the portion that exploded shows that although the iron of which it was constructed was originally No. 3, it had become, through actu- al wear and corrosion, only equal to that chassed as No. 16, or but little thicker tham paper. The boiler had not been overhauled since last fall, and the steam chimney had received no repairs since the boiler was built, three years since. If the inspection required by the act ef Congress was anything more than a farce, this disaster would never have occurred, for a proper ex- amination of the steam chimney would have shown that it would be unsafe for it to go six months longer without repair. The Erisspon com- pany seem, also, to have used every precaution to avoid accidents, as they have ronslasty con iapeans a chief e eer, Whose duty it is to gines ani boilers of all their boats under his im- mediate supervision. Alice Green, the mother of the poor children that perished, died this morning at the ital. One of her children, Eliza Green, 8 years old, is alive at New Castle, hi ving oevaned aetia sabe injury. She is now the sole survi Though it is contended that there was 20 fleced betwee the rival boats, but little reliance is on this by any who have had a chance of o! ing. There is a brisk competition between the tro Ines for ere, and | sawa party of buy tickets to-day for Baltimore, paying on! BO cents each, the Ericeson line ts lowering their regular price tosecure them. As the boats leave at the same hour every nanos; itis but natural that there should be a race down the river. The Merchants’ and People’s line are newer boats, and having more power, there is but litle necessity to m to keep ahead. The very fact that but I nianareomed between the boats shows that @ pressure of steam had been maintained on clegraph, which was, under ordinary circum- stances, the slower boat. The principal od gument was upon the petition of Mr. Carpenter, the unsuccessful candidate for the office of Prothonog tery of the Court of Common Pleas, who stands less chance of a decision in his favor, as from the large apparent majority against him he would have to ow more extensive frauds than Wm.
