BY LAST WIGHT’S MAIL, Our Philadelphia Correspondence. Purcapecrasa, Oct. 29, 1850. Another Dastardly Outrage im Moyamensing— Two Watchmen Sho: —Incendiariam, $0. Moyamensing was, last evening, the scene of another disgraceful owtrage. About half-past 9 e’cloek, a stable back of Thirteenth and Christian streets was set on fire by the western rowdies, for the purpose of enticing their rivals of the east over the line of Tenth street, and continuing the battle ef Sunday. Capt. MeShea, of the watch, was, at the time, calling the roll, and, fearing a disturb. ance, he kept his men in a body, and proceeded out Christian street. There being ne signs of a fight then, he dismissed the mento their beats. He then took a walk further north, and hearing voices of persons talking on a lot at Tenth and Catharine streets, he preceeded up Catharine, and en pean ‘as met by five or six men, armed re ine which they presented, and ordered him to go bick. The force beiag overpowering, he did go; but on reaching Tenth Stewet, he epran ja his ratile, and police ollicers Patrick Slavea an Danie! Gillan, with a few watchmen, came to hia assis nc ‘Thus reinforced, the party advanced apt etharine street, towards a party of mea, who appeared to be reuring towards Eleventh street. At this momest, four or five guns were dis ged, woundmg Coptain McShea and Patrick sven. The latter tell, but the former was able sist the other otlicers in conveying Slaven to the apothecary etore of Dr. Englund, at the cor- uerof Tenth and Catharine streets. On exemina- tion, if was found that the ball, or slug, had enter- ed Slaven’s breast, below the left nipple, aad ged in the abdonien. Another ball struck’ him a glenemg blow on the stomach. Mr. Shea re- sae two shote in his right leg, one above the knee, and the other below the groin, about seven inches apart. Slaven was removed to his home, end the physictans deem his case almost hopeless. “| he external ha»mort! was bat tfling, bat as he vormitied bloed, internal bleeding is b lieved to be very serious. The tary bad the humeanity to cut their haltera, so thet th y were easily got out. The stable was oc- evpied ty Bernard Collioe, who, a few months since, wes bummed out eu the same Spot, most of his horses perishing in the flames. The properties belonged to Mr. Edward Armstrong. r measure! Affairs tn Cuba, RRESTS ANP IMPRISONMENT AT MATANZAS* New York, October 29, 1350. In your 2! rald of this morning you copy froma Boston pape: an account of the late imprisonment at Matanzas. * As chane to be in possession of the facts in this case, I am tempted to give them to those of your readers who feel an interest in the fate of Cuba. The sin ple truths are these:—Calvet, a Catalonian, affirms—falsely, I suspect, (the facts on the face appearing improbable)—that a Creole, named Arnao, applied to him for the purchase of erms, which he apparently consent- ed to sell, appointing as a safe place for their delivery, a very secluded spot, by the bank of the Yomuri river. The completely humbugged Arpao, with his companions Lara, Clarita, Lucas Ramos, ond Nicholas, the latter a “renchman, re- paired to the plece, in the night and at the hour in- dicated by Calvet. Here, at midnight, Calvet, with twenty soldiers disguised in citizens’ dr met them, and with the ery of “ Viwa Ischel Power sprung upon the five nearly unarmed reoles, Who, notwithstanding, defended them- selves nobly. Calvet was wounded; one soldier fell dead at the firet shot of a pocket pistol, end Arnao, it is buried his concealed yoigaard in the breast of anoiher, whilst bimeelf, shot in the leg. and his head biceding profusely from a bayonet thrust, escaped to the river, swam across, and upoa the other side, pearly exheusted, was captured aud cerried tothe bespital. Immediately after this, Paria, the new governor of Matanzas, ordered the arrest of a number of persons, amongst Whom we eee the name of Doa Frencwee de la O’Garcia, the president*ef the THE LATE Sebasila railroad, a very wealthy planter, and one of the most ——, aceful, an highminded gentlemen of the and They weie ell thrown into prison, without a shadow of proof egeinst them. In ju however, to General Roacali,! must say that immedistaly upon being made ed with the origin of the proceedings, ordered the instant re lease of all, g only such as had been caught in the an de prepared forthem. We ope yet that the Cuban authorities, from a sense ofr al pride, will immediately set at liberty even thore who, after being decoyed to the spot, mace use of their arms in self-defence. The islend of Cuba cannot be screened from the eye of nations ; the acts of herfrulers must be judged, whether they will it or not, by the unavoidable and all-reschirg tribunal of public opinion through- outthe civilized worl Colonel Hermendez and his drother Don Pedro, and other -espectable citizens were also ing aired after, fer i prisonment. MONBY MARKET Tersosr Oot, 20-6P.M, ‘well rurtained. The fine weather, no doubt, has @ fa- yorable influence upen the movements of speculators, and keeps every one in good spirits, At the first beard: to.day, Delaware and Hudson Canal advanced \ per cent; Erie Income Bond: Morrie al, 4; Har. yom. \¢. All others clored at yesterday's prices. There were large transactions in Reading Railroad and Mor. ris Canal. Public works connected with trade are favorite Trincipal cities im the | nion deal largely in the above- named stocks. [tis argued by many that, because these atecks be en ro long and so largely depreciated, there is no porsibility of their ever being worth any. qhing. Such reavoning is ridiculous, amd still we find many prectiving it. The coal trade ia this country ie yet in ite infancy, Thirty years ago, three hundred tons of anthracite coal glutted the market, for neatly om entire season, and wae Lispored of with diffeulty. Now, anything less thi three ands balf millions of tons is « searcity, and raises prices very mat It ie stated that the amountof coal brought to tide water on the Chesa, ke and Obio canal from the Cumberland coal rv- gion, on the Sret dey of eavigetion, was more thag | the total rupply of cos! brought to market in 189) ‘This fect shows how rapidly the consumption of the article bas incressed, and gives us a pretty good idea ot what the next thirty years will produce. It is cur impression that the consumption of coal in th United States, in ten years, will be more than double what it {enow. The consumption of anthracite coal in the city and porth of Philadelphis year—1850 was between two anda half and three mi of brought te market tone This quastity of coal by about five lines of works, the Reading ratirond, Bebuyikill canal, Lehigh canal, Delaware aud iad. fon casal, Morrie canal, and Reriten canal make it the principal part There can be no addition to the umber of works in connection with the coal trade. above murt monopolize the transport: then of ncite coal to market, and it is only by incresee Im their capacity, that they will be able to keep Up & supply sufficient to mest the rapidly Increasing de 4. The conetraction of ove agtenmehips. the enormcus incteate in this branch Cf business will require a great epply of coal, euttable for consumption in seagoing ships. When itis con- sidered that one of there ovean steamers consumes from five hundred to one thonsand tons of coal ( thracite or bituminous) each and every voyage, some idea oan be formed of the immense amount of cosl which will be consumed in this way annually, in fire br ten years, In ten years, we shall have a large fleet of ea going mere. We hate now about twenty ocean steamships makirg regular voyages from this rte of the world, At # moderate one of there steamers consame, on veyager. about five thousnnd tons of coal This will give an aggregate of one han- per annu: dred thousand tons for the year, for these veasei« Pour years ago we hed not one ocean steamer afloat; we bave now twenty: tem years hence (if the constrac. | tien comtinnes at the present rate) wo shall hares | me hnodred conneeted with this thoveand tone ef coal wilt t Hig to forsich thom with supplies These footw be requind eutieient for their cutward royrges Inet year was $2 are sufficient to shew that our coal trade is yet im its imfancy, and thatevery work of internal improvement, ‘whether it is railroad or canal, will, from this time forward, be tested to its utmost capacity for the trans- portation of that article. The Reading Railroad Com- pany has beem compelled to add largely to ite motive power every year; the Sehuyikill canal has, within the past year or two, been enlarged; the capacity of the Lehigh canal, and the Delaware and Hudson canal, has been considerably increased, and the Morris oanal is undergoing important improvements, euch as will enable the company toaccommedate a larger portion ofthe traffic offering. The position of this work, its eastern termination being in the greatest market on this continent, and ite western termination at the out- let of the Lehigh canal, on the Delaware river, run- through a State which is one of the most flourish- ing in the Union as regards manufactures, and con- Suming large quantities of cosl,is one calculated to make it, with judicious management, one of the most Productive connected with the coal trade, It isthe only one conneet:ng this market, directly, with the anthracite coal region of Pennsylvania, and it must, therefore, command all the coal traffic its capacity will accommodate. The Lehigh canal, Jast year, brought down to Easton nine hundred thousand tons of coal, more than ene-half of which was consumed in New Jersey, along the Jine of the Morris canal, and in and east of the city of New York, Full five hundred thousand tons out of the nine hun- dred thousand would have come through the Morris canal hed its espacity permitted; whereas, only about one hundred thourand came through, all of which wes required for consumption in Newark and slong the line of the canal, Not the Grst ton camo to New York in consequence of the esnal terminating at Newark, and the limited capacity of the work pre- vented the company from extending its business The Morris canal always has boen worked full up to its utmost eapacity, and it always will be. If ite capacity, by the improvements now going on, shoald ‘be equal to one million of tons. it would be fully em- ployed. The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer Of this port, to-day, amounted to $71074 42; pay- ments, $120,147 50—balance, $4,280,493 20. . At the second board to-day, the market was through- out mere buoyant than in the morning. Brie Income Bonde advanced % per cent; India: %; Ports. mouth Dry Dook, y; Harlem, 3; Reading Railroad, Erie Railroad, %; Morrig Canal, Canton Com- pany, \i; Norwich and Worcester, {. The tendensy at the close was upward, and the indications are favorable for an active market during the rest of the week. In reference to the remarks we mde a few days since respecting the New Jersey Bxploring aud Mining Co., we find their objects to be more extensive than we stated. This company possesses large tracts of the red oxide of zine and of Franklinite in New Jersey, from which they extract a metal of chemical purity, and almost rivaling silver In lustre, being well calculated 40 take the place of German silver. The company also prepares from its minerals, white, brown and black painte, of great beauty. Their works at Newark, al- though in full cperation, are unable to met the grow- ing demand for their products, and it is for their fur- ther extepsion that the sdditional capital is now wanted. It will, no doubt, be immediately taken up. Tho Reading Railroad Compaay brought to tide water, on Saturday, the 26th inst., 9,929 toms of coal; the largert day's work in the history of the road—being equal to 0.000 tons per week, It is stated that seventy one cotton and woollen mills, all, with the exception of three, within thirty miles of Providence, R, I., in consequence ef the high price of the raw material, wholly or partislly turpended operations, Many of these were manufas- turing printing cloths.
