Wunderstand that names are being signed toa eali for a public meeting of all who are opposed to any further agitation of the slavery question, and who are in favor of the compromise measures pass- ed during the Inst session of Congress, in great numbers, and that the most influential aad reapect- able of our population coincide with the movement, and will lend it all the aid in their power. This is avery gratifying fact, and shows that the commer- cial metropolis will not tolerate any fanaticism ia d will discourage fanatics, of every i shade, in their efforts to perpetuate ill between the North and the South, destroy the trade of New York, and produce, eventually, a Union. The Courter and En- ay, published the call of the meet- So far, ence to the movement. very well; but that journal, supported, as it is, by commerce age, has been the most active in producing the very state of things which the meet- dto deplore, and in supporting the de- hes made himself conspicuous in out. This kind of consistency may do for Wall street, or for a Wall street journal, but it will not pass throughout the city. We are Pleased to learn that the meeting promises to be one of ibe largest and most enthusiastic that was ever held in New York Arrival of the Asia—European News. ‘The arrival of the British steamer Asia brings us eur full foreign files to the twelfth of the present month position as was noticed by the previous arrival. ‘The English newspapers express hopes that cotton will be vated hereafter with success in new fields, whence the British manufacturers will be able to draw their supplies It is not the first time they have anticipated this blessing, though they have found cotton fields of reality quite difler- ent from those of the imagination, which have pulled the wool over their eyes. India has failed to do anything, though large sums of money have been expended to extend the cultivation of the | pisnt, and unless prices are high in England, the export cotton trade of, India is always very limited. The political news has two prominent points in it. One has reference to the progress of Louis Na- poleon towards empire or exile—the other to the complicated aflairs of Germany, which are as in- tTicate as any politic e of machinery can be. ‘The Holstemers have been repulsed in their attack upon Fredrichetadt, and with considerable loss. Louis Napol seems to be supported ia his am- bitious views by many of the English newspapers, who are the organs of those who do not wish to publics on the old continent, devo- ted, it has been for centuries, to the establieh- Meat and consolidation of hereditary power. The design of the Vrench President, evidently, is to gogretiate himself into the favor of the military, pon whose shoulders he may be able to reach an imaper They have made strong demonstra wee a nest of re } seat seat tions in favor of him as Empe and there seems 20 be a direct opporition betw him aad the Na- tional Assembly. Certainly, he has made rapid progress with the military portion of the population of Frer and he may be to fiad a moment when he can proclaim himself Emperor, in the midst of a powerful circle of bayonets. Still his Movements are closely watched, and the National Aseembly may give * check to his career, by early The great review of the tenth of October, | when twenty-five thousand troops were under action arms, was significant of something more imper- | tot, perhaps, than even the French er English | press will admit, and though no very prominent | event has arisen from the movements at the re- | view, ye is anticipated that there will be some action growing out of the affair, and that, too, at aa | early day ‘The German question stands materially where it | did whea we commented upon it recently. Prus- sia end Austria remain in identically the same positions. One is afraid, and the other dares not move, though there ie evidently a disposition 0a | the part of both to show ther teeth. Should Prus- aim to make capita! ont of the troubles between Elector of Hesse Cesee! and the people of the th electorate, the Austrian power will interfere to @ppose such action. However, it ie impossible to | Prophecy as to the futare. The rman princi-! palitic in @ transition state, and when order €omes out of chaos, we may be more able than at Preecnt to estimate ihe probable fature of Germany. A Newsrares 1x Trowuix.—Philosopher Slieve: gammon and his ten associates, must be in trou- bie of some kind. They have issued a secret ci eular, calling upon the merchants and families for more sid—more advertisements—more patronage, &., kc. We rather thought they would come to this. When they attempted to follow in the stepe of our enterprise they were destined to burst their boiler. Won't Slievegammon cail upon the aboliionists for aid to save them from sinkiag? Are they giving too much pork for @ shilling? Have they just made the discovery ? Jamus Kxt.v—A Connaction.—The James Kelly who figured in our columns yesterday the or ganizer of a political meetiog.in Brooklyn, and asa @orrespondent with Washington Hunt, is not to be identified with the gentleman who is a candidate for the Mayoralty. There are about thirty odd persons of the same name in the New York and Brookiyn directories, end thus has an error been eommitted towards James Kelly, Esq, of the | Second ward. We are gratified to make \the cor. rection. af ah Hoserrattr? The indictment was founded on mere stool- pigeon evidence, manufactured for the occasion, all of which is well known to One-Eyed Thomp- son end the rest of the coterte. Another of the Po- lice Gazette coterte has also run away, a la War- ner, to avoid a warrant for his arrest on the charge | of being concerned in the robbery of the District Attomey’s office, an cflence which the gang at- tempted to fastea on Drury. We allude to M. T. C. Stanley, who has gone off to parts uaknown. He was a reporter and agent of Wilkes. Thus, piece by piece, does the confederacy of stool-pigeons, whese organ is the Poltce Gazette, melt away before the progress ef truth and jus- tice. Their last effort iz to get their candidate for District Attorney elected--the one they helped to nominate at Tammany Hall. The whigs are going to put up for that office N. B. Blunt, a respectable and upright man; and he will succeed against the stool-pigeon party, and all their efforts. The Jenny L! no more, ‘The first of the second series ef Lind concerts will take place, to-night, at Tripler Hall, which will seat four thousand and sixteen persons, according t» one computafion, and two hundred more at another com- putation, or about five thousand by the introduction of temporary seats. The postponement, though @ ae- rious inconvenience to strangers, was caused by the larged, and not, as has been suggested, that there could not be tickets sold at fuir prices. The worst are those for which cight dollars are charged, near the or- chestra, and which will probably be occupied by the promenade ticket holders. Some editors, since we proposed the three dollar ticket system, have advocated high prices, and will probably continue to do so, till they know more about public opinion, and less about private interests now at work, to keep up unnatural prices. One of these bril- Nant luminaries, who, in social affairs, pleads for com. munity of property and the least possible tax upon ets expensive to the people, and by way of showing the importance of helping speculators, intimates that we paid fifteen dollars each, for tickets in Europe. Very well, perhaps we did; but there speculators there, as well as here, and Mitch- Sams, Cramer, Beal and Addison, Jullien, and other music publishers and librartans in London, can carry ona speculation as well as any body in | Broadway. High prices were given in London for the first concerts there, and se they have been here—only i that the Yankees have beaten ail the lords and ladios in the buriness, giving for a single ticket $225, $425 and $650, to hear the inimitable cantatrice. This dovs not alter the necessity of carrying out Jenny Lind’s own desires with respect to pricus. She has 6a d. and fill says, Chat she wishes ail the people of the United Stutes to hear her at reasonable rates. But, unless speculators are put down, this will be an imposstbilit Our shatie are levelled at showmen and speculators, who are acting contrary to the charming Jenny Lind’s own will, and who would gain as much by their pic and plans, nd low cunning. as she dees by her splen- did secomplisbments. with the public and Jenny Lind—we will protect bota, and care Lo more for the press of this country or of the world, than we do for the equibs let off on the Bat- tery on a Fourth of July evening. Jenny Lind is not one of Stewart's camel's Suir shawisand if she were, only one could wear the precious treasure Daniel Webster cannot «peak for piaintif’ and defendant at the same time, wud the pricy of one of bis pleas is no criterion for the payment of a coucert ticket. Spocial pleading, by such illustra tions, amounts to nothing. Jenny Lind’s great talents are devoled to popuisr appreciation aud gratification, and facilities should be given to thy public to enjoy the exereise of them at a moderate charge, THREE POLLAKS I8 THE reien—There we stand fast, The public will give that, and no more—as we ace fw tisfied, from the letters we are daily receiving on t! subject. Holders are firm at our quotations, and so long as the elements of peculation continue in a heaithy state, so long will the demand for stocks of all kinds continue actire Speculators for a rise in prices, who purchase on time, buyers’ option, are not compelled to put their stocks upon the market at the maturity of their contra bot easily find facilities for carrying them for any length of time, and thus reduce the quen- | tity of ehares afloat, But for the enry state of the money mark the probabilities of steady remittances of gold from California, holders of stock, would not have so much confidenee, and a mo- erate reaction in prices weuld doubtless produce a temporary panic. Under existing state of things. a depreciation in the market value of any recurity creates no apprehension, and only induces holders to withdraw their lists from the market, and wait pa- Within the past month, we have received full four militons of dollars | in gold dust from California, aud the probability is | that the reeeipts will continue at that rate throughout | the winter. Very few realize the extent of our present | supply of gold dust Cali- or rather of gold coin. fornia bas given us at least forty millions of dolists | ‘ in gold dust within the past two years, an amouat | equal tothat held by all the bauks in the United Stat | 4p 1845. In 1847, we recetved nearly twenty five mil- ions of gold from Hurepe in payment for our breadl- etuffs ; Im 1848, the importation from California com- | me been steady, It is, therefore, anfe to extimate the im- | portation of geid and silver into the United States from all parts of (he 1, (independent of the ox years, atone hundred million of dollars, But « portion of this immense eum has gone iuto the vaults of the banks ; | porsersion, received from customs, and the balance has | deen added to the circulating eurreney of the country. ‘This has materially increased the value of our elreu- jating medium, and pla our currency more ona par with that of Great Britsin. The improve: it is progrersing with wonderful rapidity, and before the lapee of many years, if California keeps up the supply ountry, and tl y country on the face of the earth. Up to about the commencement of the year 1847, the currency of this country was subject to frequent and con- tractions in prices for every species of property. There fuctuations were most ruinous and disastrous in their effects, and resulted in periodical revaisions which bankrupted thourands. Within the past three years avery important change has been experienced in the finencial and commercial world. The banks have been deprived of a part of the power they formerly pos- tin a proper position. The nt Treaeury system has worked admirably since It was established has beon invaluable asa check upon the movements of banking iastitations located in the most impor tent commercial cities. This, with the great influx of precious metals, andthe addi- tion of s large amount of specie to the circulating currenty of the country, have prevented the banks from expanding largely, or having any infuence upon mereantile matters, by any contraction they at any time may have resorted to. The movements of specie du- ring the part three years bave been on such an enormous seale, that the effect experienced in previous years has been lost. This is, of itself, a very important improre- ment, and one, we tru bich will be permanent. The importation or exportation of half a million of dollars In epecie used to create a great excitement in financial circles, and influence the movements, more or less, of banking institutions throughout the Union. Now three to four millions of doliars in gold dust are re- ceived every month from California, and it fs bardiy noticed. T! fect of all these changes it be of the most favorable eharacter, and we look for a perma- neney steadiness in Snancial and commeroial af- fairs, never before experienced in the history of this country. Our progress under this new order of things cannot but be rapid, and prices for all our prodacts ‘will be regulated more by the setual supply and do- mand, than by any movement of the banks, or any at- tempt to create @ temporary artificial exp: m or contraction for the benefit of any clique of speonle- tore, There isso h eapital, which can be earily obtai at reduced rates of interest, over which the banks have no control, that ne apprehension need be entertained, of any scarcity to tent safictent to have any material influence upon prices or private eredits. ‘The steamship Aria, from Liverpool, brings one week inter intelligence from all parts of Burope, The eom- mereial advices do not vary materially trom those re- ceived by the America. Quotations for cotton were without change; and breadstuffs were in moderate do. mand at previous prices. except Indian core, whi had slightly advanced. The financial aceeunts con- tinue favorable. At the first board, to-day, (here was 9 moderate do- mand for government securities; but prices wees mat ed, and the supply from that soures has since | F sustained.
