The steamship Europa, with three days later in- telligence from Europe, will be due at this port to- morrow. More of the Slavery Agitation—Appeal of the Negroes to the North, On Tuesday evening last the colored people of vhe city of Brooklyn held a meeting in the High street Church, in reference to the Fugitive Slave bill. At that meeting an appeal of the people of color to the whites of the free States was unani- mously adopted, and it will no doubt be published in the abolition journals immediately. We have carefully read this appeal, and if no such instrument as the constitution of the United States were in existence, it might perhaps be entitled to some consideration; but as jong as that instrument remains the law of the land, we shull abkle by it, and ardently hope that its provisions, one and all, will be fuith- fully carried out, without fear or favor. eppeal the constitution is extensively quoted from, end the questicn is asked, can the whites of the North obey the Fugitive Slave bill, or permit its provisions to be curried out, when that instrument declares certain self-evident troths, that all meo are created equal, that all men have an inwlienable right to freedom, &c., &c.? Now this is sophis. try. Itis very weil known that negroes, or colored people of any character, were not recogaised in that instrument at all excest as slaves. As such they were referred to; and to say that they were alluded to in the preamble that all men are created equal, end have an inalienable right to liberty, &c., is to say What is false, and what cannot be sustain- ed by faets. The appeal resting, as it does, on this assumption, therefore, falls to the ground, and is deprived of all the foree which it would otherwise have. Instead of being termed an appeal to the whites of the free States, it should be styled an ap- peal to the fanaticism ot the free States, and an at- tempt to destroy the constitution, and with it the integrity of this republic. When our ancestors entered into the federal com- pact, they made a solemn agreement that certain rights of the South would be respected and guar- ranteed. Without such guarrantee the Southern States would never huve entered the Union. That eompact became the law of the land, and as long as it exists, it must be supported and adhered to by every good citizen. The duty of upholding it is as obligatory on the American people of the present day as it was on those of the time at which it was founded. It cannot be violated without a dissolu- tion of the Union; and the question arises whether we are to jeopardize if not destroy not only the Union but the happiness of the slaves themselves, by violating that law and thereby refusing to carry out the constitution. That it was necessary to pass such a bill, in order to carry out our obliga~ tions to the South, none but fanatics will deny, and such a billjwould be entirely superfluous if the North had acted in good faith towards the South. It is useless to appeal to the constitution, therefore, to vindicate opposition to the Fugitive Slave law, for if our condact be tested by that instrament, we are bound by every consideration to take exactly an opposite course, and support it to the letter. If there is any serious intentioa on the part of the public, either black or white, to disobey this law, the result is easily seen. Bloodshed and civil war will be the consequence, for they may rest assured that it will be enforced whenever occasion requires it; and, if necessary, the whole ewarm of white fa. Batics, and their dupes, the colored people, will be exterminated by the guns of our military. Of this they have had en earnest, in the proceedings which recently took place in the city of Detroit, where eeveral military companies were ordered out to sup- port the civil authorities in the arrest of a fugitive elave. The same thing would take place here, if the oceasion required it, This, the colored people and the fanatical whites may rest assured of, and #0 soon as they force that issue on the public, so soon Will a war of extermination against the blacks be commenced, the end of which no one can see. This Union is not te be torn asunder by misplaced philanthropy, or the fanaticism, or embitioa of Seward, or any demegogue like him, and the at- tempt will be met with an opposition ofa character that perhaps such disorganizers may not dream of. Ifthe issue of the Union or bloodshed is forced on the pecple, then let it come, no matter what may be the consequences. Seward may stump the Northern States, or Mr. Van Buren may do it, or any other free soiler or fanatic may do it, but the corstitution must and shall be sustained, be the consequences what they. may. We quote $125 » $130, between whick. rates a few have changed hands. ‘There is very little doubt that the Toronto and Lake Simcoe railroad will roon be in the hands of eontract- ors. ‘Ihe people of Toronto appear to anderstand per- fectly well their own interests, and the completion of this important line, connecting Toronto with the head- waters of Lake Huron, will advance the prosperity of that city more than any other work of internal im- provement it could construct. The County Council of Simcoe have voted a grant of £50,000 im debentures, and Mr. Capreol, the projector of the road, is urging the corporation of Toronto to come forward with £100,000, the balance wapting to make wp the £500,- 000, which will insure the completion of the whole line. In aid of the corporation £100,000, several of the most wealthy inhabitants of Toronto have al- ready contributed about £12,500. ‘The following account of the receipts and expensee of the Boston and Worcester Railroad, is from an off- cial source :— Boston asp Worcester Ratinoan.
