We wre well aware that the subject of slavery in the United States is one of in‘inite di alty, exciting among the eitizens of that repadlie intense alonm, and upon which they are of necessity ex- credingly sensitive and suspicious. We also feel that We, as Englishmen, ought, tor many reasons, to abstain from everything like bl when treat- ing of the existenee of slavery in the United States, and also that we have no ground for awardiag any peculiar appleuse to ourselves with respect to the subject of slavery generally, we have ourselves only very lately ceased to be a state m tintaining for our own ends this horrible institution. But, while we acknowledge that in this instaace we ought to be most chery of reproof, we must also, in some measure, assume a night to remark upon the matter, stace we, in fuct, as a nation, were the creators of the mischief.
