THE WEEKLY HERALD. THE FANCY DRESS BALL AT NEWPORT, we , &e., &o. ‘The Weekly Herald will be published at nine o'clock to-morrow morning. Its contents will embrace the veoent news from California and Europe, the proceed- jugs in Washington, o full description of the Grand Wancy Dress Ball at Newport, &c., &e., &e. Bingle eopies sixpence. MONEY MARKET. ‘Tuunspay, September 5—6 P. M. Quotations for fancy stocks are steadily settling down, The market opened heavy this morning, and the transactions were only to a moderate extent. The lead- ‘mg fancies—those in which there has been, during the past six months, the greatest speculative movement— are now falling off more rapidly than those which have heretofore been more neglected. With nothing in the world tosustain prices, it is a matter of considerable surprise to us, what prevents them from falling back to points current last winter. It is by no means cer- tain that they will not bring up semewhere in that neighborhood. Holders of unproductive fancy stocks, with such @ prospect before them, cannot feel very comfortable, as there have already been large losses in the way of interest, and likely to be greater sacrifices in depreciation of market value. All public seourities have for some time past been almost entirely neglected, Prices have, however been pretty well sustained. As for any advance in the market value of government or State stocks, it is almost out of the question. Most ef these rule so high that, as investments, they are poorly productive; and as the demand for money from other sources in- ereases, it will be withdrawn from these securities, which will increase the supply on the market, and very likely cause a decline in prices. The demand for U. 8. @s in London, has lately been limited, and the proba- bility is that it will continue so, unless an important decline in prices should take place in this market. At the first board to-day, Erie Railroad fell off 4 pe eent; Harlem 34; Long Island Railroad, 34; Morris Ca wal, }s. Since the payment of the semi-annual inte- rest, on the 1st inst., Erie Second Mortgage Bonds have declined 14% percent, Reading Rallroad advanced, to day, percent. Holders of Reading Railroad shares feel eonfident that an improvement of several per cent will soon be realized, in consequence of the damage to the Schuylkill Canal. It is stated that the railroad will have the monopoly of the coal carrying trade from the Schuylkill coal region for the remainder of the season. ‘The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port, to-day, amounted to $125,112; payments, $2,586 67—balance, $7,324,024 20, Mint certificates up to No, 4,700, inclusive, will be paid at the Assistant ‘Treasurer's office to-morrow, September 6th. In ac- cordance with instructions received from the Treasury Department. all powers of attorney, certificates, &c., in foreign languages, relative to the collection of in- terest and transfer of United States stock, will hereaf- ter be translated at the office of the Assistant Trea- surer, the expense of the translations to be defrayed Dy the attorneys. ‘The earnings of the Harlem Railroad Company for the month of August, this year, amounted to $49,001 52, against $38,135 37 for the corresponding month in 1849, —showing an increase for the month this year of 10.959 19. ‘The steamship Empire City, from Chagres, brings two weeks later accounts from California. The Pana- ms, at Panama, from San Francisco, brought down, it is reported, two millions three hundred thousand dollars im gold dust, of which $75,600 is on board the Empire City on freight, and $400,000 in the hands of passen- gers. The Cherokee, now due from Chagres, will pro- ably bring « large portion of the balance. Our ad- vices from California continue favorable. There was more activity in the markets, and better prices ruled for all the leading arties of trade, as will be seen by prices current, published in another part of this day’, paper. From themines there is nothing new. Every. ‘thing appears to be going on harmoniously in San Franeisco, and we are pleased to see commercial affairs settling down upon a more substantial basis. ‘The table of exports from this port, for August, 1850, given a few days since, showed s small increase on the previous month, and a great increase compared with the corresponding month last year. The imports dur img August were very large, but not so large as for August in 1649. Leaving specie out of account, and the imports for August, 1850, was several millions un- der that for August, 1849, The annexed table show the imports and exports for August, in each of the pas Shree years:— Commence oF THE om or New Yoru—Imronts anv *, August. 1848. 1849. 1850.
