nu SY MaRKE Monpay, July 20—6 P.M. 38 was so insafferably hot to-day, that out-door transactions were limited, sad no one seemed disposed to operate much any way. The stock market was par- tieularly dull, and prices fell off a fraction. At the first board, Brie Railroad declined % per cent; Read- ing Railroad, 34; Harlem, 4; U. 8. 6's, 1868, }; Can- ton Company fell off % per cent from the opening. ‘We oannot expect any movement of importance in the stock market, s0 long as this oppressively hot weather Jasts, as it must drive speculators into the country, ‘and compel those remaining in town to keep as quiet as possible, ‘The advices from all parts of the country give the most gloomy accounts of the growing tobacco erop. ‘The late drought is said to have inflicted a degree of Injury searcely knowa in the history of the plant ia Virginie, In the county of Nottaway, the heart of the great tobaeco region, there is not more then half @ ‘erop standing, and that is generally small and late, and ft is not possible to make more than half & crop, there being scarcely any plants to replant the missing hills. From the entire tobacco region, the reports are equally ‘unfavorable. Several mills in Rhode Island have recently de- termined to suspend operations, Among which, are the Compton Mill, 10,000 spindles ; Union Stexm Mill, 10,000 spindles ; and the Newport Steam Mill, all manu- facturing print cloths. ‘Phe valuation of property for assessment in Port- land, Maine, is:—Real éstate, $3,220781; personal, $3.452.338. The taxes amount to $91 4h % } The garbled statement of the position of the Albany ‘and Schenectady Railroad Company, as lately pub- Msbed by the directors, should read as follows, aud more than one ber of that body have been of this impression for some time past. A recapitulation of the present situation of the company’s affairs should eontein wae 5 i exhibit of its liabilities, & to the last Legislature. . - $52.00 due to banks sa individuals MT cai 70,000 ge for ight depot property, ment. acure, over ns ana jeocsrary to dod— rer ‘or passenger de) a depo: grounds, and three miles lof roadway, (due ein 1861). ‘or now used aud necessary Bireebt: pear on which the company have eonciey selene et with double track, Making « total of. . Or say very nearly $2,000,000 for seventeen miles of road, haying the Troy and Schenectady Railroad to sompete with on the one side, and the probability of ene from Schenectady and Catskill on the other. ‘The York Manufacturing Company have declared » semi-svnual. dividend of three per cent, This Com- pany was organized in 1831. They drive 22,000 spin- dies, and manufacture heavy white and colored goods. They consume, annually, $30,000 worth of indige, 65,000 pounds of copperas, and sixty tons of starch. ‘Their dying establishment is said to be one of the most valuable in the United States, A new invention has been applied to one of the looms, which will, pro- bably, be brought into general use by this company. We are informed that, by the invention, the yarn is fed faster and more regularly, and from sixty to eighty yards are finished by this loom ins day, being nearly double the quantity made by the looms now used. The Laconia Manufacturing Company have declared no dividend, but have carried to its credit the two per eent. earned during the past six months, This Com- pany manufacture heavy white goods only, principally drillings and jeans. They have 1,112 looms, but are working, at present, only 480, having reduced the number of yards manufsetured annually from 6,000,000 to 2,000,000, on account of the present high prices of the raw material. The Pepperell Manufacturing Com- pany have created two new mills at Biddeford, Maine, with 30,000 spindles, and will commence operations this fall. The high price of the raw material has ebecked the operations of most of (he Bastern manu- facturers, but we have not heard yet of the first sus- pension on the part of any of the manufacturers of the Bouth. The Southern manafacturers probably sup- plied themselves with the raw material to a greater ex- tent early in the searon, when prices ruled compara tively low, and they are therefore able to carry on thelr ‘operations profitably, while those of the North have Deon compelled to partially suspend. Tho Southern manufacturers have for their particular style of man- ufactures, the monopoly of thelr own markets, and in some instances they have been able to compete success fully in Northern markets with Northera manufac- tures. The South is becoming so rapidly plied with manufactures of their own iadustry, that the markets which have heretofore been of so much im- portance in building up the immense manufacturing ertablichmens of the Norsh, have been lost; and the mopopoly which s high tariff has heretofore gi the manufacturers of New England, ean no lenger be ea- joyed As econ as the South manufacture more largely for themselves, we shall bear less from the North about protective tariffs. ‘The Schuylkill Canal will be repaired end in naviga- Die order again by the 10th of August. A portion of the work may be in operation sooner. The Lehigh Caral, between Mauch Chunk and Easton, has sustain. ed damages that will require at least three weeks to repair, This will depend, In some moasure, upon the ware division of the sylvania Canal, which ts materially damaged, and will not be in boating order before the lst of Beptem- f the Lehigh will be suspended until the canal between Mauch Chunk and Kaston is repaired. Extensive damage has been done to the Delaware and Madson Company's Canal which will require from four to six weeks to repair, and the breaking of a dam has filled the largest portion of their colileries with water. The Wilkesbarre 4dro- cote estimates the loss of this company by the freshet at o half million dollars, taking into consideration, of oourse. the suspension of the coal trade from six weeks to & period of perhaps two months. In the Schwytkill region, the railreads are in fal; operation again, bat many of the collieries below the water level are drowned out, and some will not bein fall operation again fir e week to come : which, taken fn connection with » total euxpension of the trade, by ennel, for at least two weeks longer, will materially affect the trade of that section, and it is doabted by many if it can furnish more coal for the balance of this year than it did last year, with eli the facilities that eanbe ht into use, under the great depression which bas characterized the trade np to the present time. We give, in another part of this day's paper, a fall account of the coal trade. ) St this time, will be interesting te consumers and those engaged in the trade ‘The official report of the State Bank of Tennesse: end branches, for July, 1860, compared with those for October, 1848, April, 1847, and Sept., 184, was as an- aexed — Bawk Or Te poemig Naaiy Brase Ysee vamses warns || 161,199 78,128 621,00 85) fod 243,"82 «zon 152,582 477,049 172.417 Bit En cal odie rn gery s7 Oe 515) BR : x 1a on gt Tae Tara ee Soy Internal imp. men rene iar 5.4850 6,016,089 6 ator Tedependent of the above named items, we find emong the lMabititie mmon School Land Dis triets, G288.116 81; Treaeorer Institution for the Blind, $725 46, Certificates Doposit, $14.262 80. Wasnimcrom, July 28, 1890, The Compromise Bill—Mr Ewing and Mr. Hoar —The Texas Protest, and Mr. Fillmore, One of the most ringuler ocourrences of the times, ia the appointment ot Mr. Hoar, of Massachusetts, to the seat left vacant by Mr. Webster im the Senate. Ke- garded either ax a rebuke to Mr Webster, or as a rebuke to South Carolina, it ix one of the moat ourious of the chapter of accideuts of the lest six months; fou it may be thatthe vote of Mr Hoar will decide the question of law regarding togitive saves and free peo- ple of color, upon which he was no uugractously expelled from 1@ borders of the Palmetto 5iate some time age, other singular feature in the case is, that whom i Mf: erage ‘ie Ost great Compromise Senate, this session, he forgot the point Lay Soy bed imtended to make im reference to the case of Mr. Hoar in Charleston the very man who was to be his successor before the session oxpired.
