Such » man must possess the requisite capabilities for the other branehes, with Bis experience in public lite Hi naturel amiability of disposition ts supposed to inet him, But we bave confidence that where firmness is required, be will exercise it, There isa very general confidence in the new President among all parties, and covery kiodiy feeling towards him; but he Must have confidence in bimsclf anda constant dis- trust of the demagogues who will cluster here to give him advice, That point once secured, we are safe enough. The danger is from the demagogues, Mr. Seward is considered defanct (ve do not mean to say he is s demegogue; no such thing); but he is considered defunct. Yet bis friends are moving. They are moving heaven and earth, and the waters under the earth, to keep in Fitzwarren and Butterfield. Why so? Because Fitzwarren controls the post offices, and Butterfield the land offices; and they are both good for Beward, when you come to get up county meet- ings to elect delegates to the convention of 1852. Mark rene give up the cabinet; but they hold on for the succession. They would like to retain Collamer, and even Ewing, if possible; but as that does not ap- pear to be possible, they will be satisfied with Fitz- warren and Butterfield. “Letus wait a day or two, There is business ahead for all hands, We forbear further discussions of the new cabinet. Nothing baying been determined, and there being & host of candidates in the field, any selection ata 8 guses might fall wholly short of the mark. ‘The difficulty of taking Dawson, of the Senate, is, that a democratic ultra would be sent in his place from Georgia, That will hardly do. ‘There is also something of a difficulty with Mr. Webster; an anti-compromise maa might sent in his place.» Yet it may be, that he will accept, from the paramount object of a powerful cabinet, with s compromise man at the head of it. Conspiracy Cases Before Justice Mounttort. Some very strange and remarkable developements are about to be brought to light in the crim. con. con- spiracy charges preferred against George W. Niles, Danie! A, Gale, and Nathaniel W. Roberts, which aré now under investigation before the police court. Daniel A. Gale, although evidently, by his own showing, the principal operator and collector of items, has been used as a witners, and the following affidavit is one of his curious productions, by which he involves Niles and Roberts, whe are both lawyers. ‘There appears to have been a flourishing business carried on for some time past on the “ mock crim. con.” principle, in which tome very respectable and venerable old gentlemen, residing in the fashionable portion of the oity, have been detected in a “day's shooting,” and having, as alleged, trespassed on the preserves of other men’s property, bave been made to pay rather dearly for their game. Some of these old sportamen. as well as the younger ones—of whom there is over a dozen—will now have to toe the mark, and give evidence before the magistrate, as to the several sums paid by them ia the settlement of the “ trespass in the case’ In these matters, however, it seems that the lawyers have bagged the greater portion of the game, wi impletons have furnished the powder and shot. Yesterday, the case of Roberts, who was counsel for Mr. Havens, was cailed up for » hearing. Mr. Havens was sent for, to give evidence, but could not be found, It is believed ho will not appear, as it was stated that he left the eity early yesterday mornin, Quite a new feature has been opened in these crim. con. matters. and before the termination of the inves- tigation. it is presumed some very rich and startling facts will be shown. Daniel A. Gale, being sworn, says that :—About the middle of June, 1849, he heard a conversation between jeorge W. Niles and Ellen Williams, alias Sullivan, in Niles! private office, corner of Broadway and John stroet; Niles and said Williams were speaking of Hen- ry Havens; Niles said that Havens was good for $2,000, and he meant to make that out of him; said Williams, had been trying to decoy and reduce Havens, but he was rath on ward ; Niles told her to excite him ; said Williams was in the office of Niles rig bogey a as often once or twice a week, and she and Niles would drink together ; Niles would leave all other business to attend to ‘hor exclusively ; their inter- course was in private; in the early part of July, 1849, I heard Miles tell said’ Williams to go ‘th Mr, Havens that evening aud ring tho bell, bad not got home, to wait there until 1 afterwards heard Niles ask her it Niles were not to have any convert: chen with Hav I think Mr. Havens did not newer the letter, or ut ton days after I took the letter to Havens, as stated; Niles, handed me a declaration, or writ, or something of the kind, to serve on Mr. Havens, and I went to his store and called bim out, and walked with him round to the United States Hotel; when I served the war nothing but a common prostitute, and better have nothing to do with her, and that was in the practice of defrauding wealthy por- ut of their money ia that way; Mavens anid hat wyer was Out of the city, and he t know what to doabout it; he then asked Bulliven was, the suit having been comm: im ged aad seed bln’ wile tbe mins Acilios east Nile , but put one of his flagers to the ye and drew {t dow at 'y4 ot want any one to know it; I told Niles of this, also; Niles told me I must put myself in the way of Have 4 ad- viee him to employ N.
