Ae Our Washington Correspondence. Wasmxeron, Julv 7, 1850. Beening Paragraphs — Te Galphins—New Mexico : —The Omnibus, Cuba, $c. How stands the cuce! But for the votes of Mesers. Cabell, of Florida, Merton, of Virginia, Stephens and Tombs, of Georgia—all whige—the President of the United Suites would not have Deen yesterday censured for his epinion given to Crawford in the Galphia case. What covld have induced these whigs thus to censure their owa President? lt was the “ nigger question—the inferun! nigger question.” Soured @t Old Zack’s free soil arrangement in New Mexico, and indignant, even to the point of the bayonet, great guns und canister, Mr. Stephens and Mf. Toeuibs have just been waiting for a chance for a broadside at Old Zack. But there was something wore ¢ When they found out that their man, Crawford, hhad to go by the board, they determined to hiteh the President to hin, and to seat him out to the country, coupled with the disgrace of the principal Galphn. Ner do we comprehend why Crawford should be panished, and Meredich and Johuson go free. Let the judgment of the House cover the whole case ; but let there be some attowance for Old Zack, on account of the whsolute ignorance in which he was Aest as to the real merits of the Galphin. The Celebration—Result of the Conspiracy Case— Trotting Matches, ec. Our city papers are still filled with accounts of the celebration of the Fourth of July, and a most merry time they all appear to have had of it. I have never known the day to have beea more uni- versally observed. The case of the two brothers, Cochran, which has so long occupied the City Court, convicted of a conepiracy to falsely charge George W. Warner with perjury, was closed on Saturday, by a sen- tence of one year’s imprisonment in jail, fiae of $100, and costs of court toeach. This is a most singular case. Some mouths swee, the District Attorney refused to proceed agaiast the eldest of the brothers, asserting his belief that he was in- sane. He denied insanity, aud demanded a uial. The court retused to try hun, on the same ground, aud he consequently brought urticles of impeach- ment befote ite Legislature, agsinst both of them, which were Jaid on the table. " At the next teria of the court, he demanded a jury trial, on the ques- tion of sanity, which was granted, aud he argued his own cuse with much ability. The case oc- cuyied one week, and the jury fia ce 9 Teturned a verdict, that they believed him to be of sane iad. The court then ordered that the trial forconspiracy should progress at the next term, and the brothers were held to bail. They were consequently ied a few weeks since, arguing cwa cases, When a verdict of guilty Was rendered, aud the above sentence has been imposed. The Judge «nl Dia trict Attorney are, however, satistied of the chargs of insanity, and will, it is presumed, apply fora ardon for them. Our Philadeiphia Correspondence. Puu.apguvuia, July 8, 1850. The Compr omise Bill—The Meeting This Eve- ning—Fireand Fight—Miss Fisher—The Cati- Sornia News, &. The all engro. grand whig meeting which ia to be held thi nipg, with the view ostensibly of giving alfall and cordial endorsement to the Clay Compromise bill. I say ostensibly, for there ‘is an under current at work, which has a preponderating iafluence in the demonstration about to be mude. Our whig sena- tor, Mr. Cooper, who is particularly averse to ostra: cism in any form, and who is out in favor of Mr. Clay's bill, is desirous of showing the world of ‘Washingeon how he stands at hom-; and in this desire he és cordially seconded by the Ingwirer and Daily News, of this city, which journals, whig as they are, love the administration about as well a8 a certain unmentionable gentleman does holy water. Apirt from this influence, the proposed meeting will receive the al Most unaniaious support of our business comaa- nity; for these men of dimes and dollars, have at last, and with good cause, taken ths alarm. They | well “know that unless the slavery question is set- ded within the next six weeks, there will be a daa- gerous falling off in orders for the supply of the Southern market. Indeed, a leading hoase in Market street, informed me the ether day, that unless the Clay, or a similar eompromise bill passed speedily, they would be compelled, in order to save themselves, and get rid of their stock, to open a house in Charleston or New Orleans. There was quite a serious fire yesterday after- nocn in the wholesale erockery store, corner of Merket and Fitth gstreets. The loss, however, was fully covered by insurance. Afier the fire extinguished, and while oa their way home, the Sheffer Hose Company hid sn interesting pitch baile with the friends and adherents of the oyamensing Hove Company, in the classic par- lieus of Shippen and > nd. The fight com- menced with a volley of brickbats from the litter company, followed by « comfortable round of bullets froma respectable namber of horse pistols. The Shiffiers, nothing daunted, drew their rev: vers, and not only succeeded in earryiog off their carriage in triomph, but, itis feared, fatally woan- ded two of their asssilants, and thas closed the Sunday sfternoon amusements in our city.
