_ Jane 80-6 P. M. There has not bees much activity in the stook mar- Ket during the pax week, but priees have, throughout, Deon steadily improving. Monday was really @ blue day for holdem of fancy stocks, and the appearance of things, at the elose of the second boards on that day, was apytiing but pleasant. On Tuesday « slight reaction took plage, sad prices lightly improved, with considerable demard for goveroment securities, and a very moderate inquiry for the fameies, On Wednes- day several of me leading fancies were in better de- mand, at beth prices, and the bears were the priacl- pal purebaers. On Thursday large amounts of stock ehapged bands, but the operations wore confined most- ly to gorermment and Btate securities, and to Harlem and Frie Railroads, at prices slightly,in advanoe of ‘dhow eurrent the previous @ay, On Priday and Sat- urday there no change in transactions or quota- fions, Worth woticiug, amd the market closed rather heavy, at the second board, yesterday. There, ison the whole, more setivity in fancy stocks than usual at this season, sod there appears to be considerable anx- fy, on the part of holders, to get out, Prices tor most of the fancics rule from three to five per eent be- Jow those current ‘bree weeks since, and purchasers at ‘these prices feel evidently very uncomfortable, and are | watehing very closely for an opportunity to slip oug without loss, It is utterly impossible to tell what eourse prices for fancy stocks will take from ome day to another; but the chances are decidedly against a rise, sufficient to permit purchasers, at the highest points, to get cut with a whole skin. Tho fact is, there is no market beyond Wall street, and any improvement in prices, gothup among the brokers for the purpose of at- tracting-outriders, generally has a coatrary effect, for gostead of tuking stock out of the street, it gives mauy Outside holders an opportunity of realising, and in- creases the umount of stock in the hands of thy bro- kers, instead of diminishing it. Phe annexed table exhibits the quotations current im ‘thin market, for the principal speculative stocks, for vench day of the past week, and at the close of the wook previous, It will be seen that most of the fancies have im preve ut that for the last two or three days there bad been no material variation. On Monday last the Jowest points touched were much below those given in ta of specie frem this port, within the next siz montha, unless the fall importatione should prove to be much more limited than anticipated. At present prices our stoeks cannot be in much demand abroad for permanent investment; and, even if they were, the WwW supply left on this side would soon be exhausted; and =i» a privat this reat source of means, with which we have here- tofore liquidated such @ lerge amount of forelgu in- debtedners, must soon be completely absorbed. The Alton and Springfield Railroad Company of Tilt- nois have purchased 8.500 tons of rails, at £5 per ton casb, in Wales, and the Richmond and Danville Rail- road Company have purchased 1,500 tons of rails, at the same price. ‘The iron manufacturers of this coun- try cannot compete with the mauufacturers of Groat Britain, if the foreiga menufacturers ean afford to sell rails at £5 per ton at the place of manufacture. If it Setrue that we eannot manufacture railroad iron in this country for lees than seventy dollars per ton, it would require # duty of at least one hundred (100) per cent to properly protect, or rather to enable our manu. facturers to successfully compete with those of Eng. land; but we are not disposed to admit that such isthe care, that it really requires a duty anything like that rate, or that we eaunot manufacture rails here, of the in Great Britain, or any other part of the world. We have @ ruperior metal, superior fuel, and everything necersary but rkill in management, and economy in expenditure, Want of eapital is another difficulty we have to contend sgainst. There are numerous tron manufacturers located in different sections of the country, doing @ more productive, profitable busines, ‘at this moment, than ever before, under any tariff, or any degree of protection, and there are at this moment more furnaces in full blast, and in active operation, more men employed in manufacturing iron, than at avy time during the most protective tariff wo ever had. It is all very well to make mountains, if possible. out of molebills, to proclaim far and wide. that furna- ces here and there have been put out, and that thou- sands of men have been turned out of employment, and great distress caused, but somehow or other we teldom hear of new furnaces being created, or new estoblishments created, to an extent much more than fufficent to offeet those which may have, from xome cnure. temporarily or permauently suspended. Not withianding all the statements made b; retutive to the depression of the gre interests of this country, we have made up our min that thy never were, as a whole, in «more prospe- rous porition, oF really required less protection than at the table. Wasiinaron, June 30, 1880. Saturday Afternoon Summing Up. To-day the fiscal year expires, and from and after to-morrow the government will have to get on as well as they can till the annual appropria- tions are made. The leading friends of the exclu sive California are in the House having resolved, in ceucue, last night, that California shall take precedence of the apprepriations, there will, no doubt, be a good deal of embarrassment in some of the departments of the government, for want of finances, before they get the money. Mr. Clay expects to get @ vole on Wednesday or Thureday next; but it is « as likely that the discussion will go on in the Senate for eight or ten days yet; and then it is just 6s likely as anything else that the bill will be iaid upon the table ‘We had the conclusion of « speech from Honest John Davis to-day, agains: the position of Mr. Webster, as a Northern man, supporting this bill, and the beginning of a sp-ech from Mr. Cooper, of Pennsylvania, in defence of his «pposition ‘against the expressed opinion of the Inte Whig State Con- vention of Pennsylvania. ‘This isan up hill work foramen to stand out nealnas the party placii him in the Senate; and Mr. Cooper could not, of course, finish up his case to-day. Mr. Cooper deserves lurge credit for his independence, if he should go for the *Omnibus;” but, looking home- ward, it would seem to be equivalent to a lagk of discretion. But the most amusing thing in the Senate to-day was the speech of Gen Housten against the Presi- dent’s want of respect for the claim of Texas to New Mexico. He kept those old white heads of the chamber, who love a bit of fun as wellas @ good piece of beet, ina continual grin, breakin outat intervals into # spontaneous explosion, Ok Zack, in his Mexican despatches, once or twice spoke’ rather ryatieg of the Texas Rangers, as a set of dare-devls who would kill a Mexican witl out any special provocation. Old Sam Jacinto hardly knew that it was more crimaal! to shoot the Mext- cane singly than by hecatombsataclip. It was @ mere matter of killing them afier ali—so we snp- pose; and no doubt there was a good deal of it done in detail as well as by wholesale; and if the rangers were the best at the detail or retail business; it was the result of a long traiuingby the Mexicans them- selves. We understand that Governor Bell, of Texas, has called out 2000 of these Kangers to march to San- ta Fe, and as they have no very grateful disposie tion towards Gen. Taylor, his Lt. Colonel Monroe, and his 800 men of af arms, may have some work to do. To meet any contingency of this sort, how ever, the President, we learn, has ordered reinforce- ments to the amount of 600 men to Col. Monroe, not for the purpose of fighting the Texans, but to scare them of]; and ye: there is no telling what is to follow. When the Texans start out on the war- path they don’t like to be disappointed.
