Col. Benton is pretty generally regar ied as an imps Tiows, domineering, and dictatorial eustomer, with a Proslivity to quarrel with everybody, aud to browbeat ‘all opposition into obedience. ‘With all that we have nothing todo, We have only ‘bo consider his course and his qualities asa public maa jand here, at least, he has some remarkably strong points. He is an industrious stutent, his speeches are ‘the results of labor and research ; and his argumonts fre from the history, the fact» the statistics, the re- @ords, the treaties, and the u bearing upon the Subject. He is always posted up with the documenta, ‘It was the old map of the old treaty of Utrecht, with the red lines seross it, “drawn by tho king’s own Bhand”’—it was this map. and the historical events re- @ultivg from the naughty trick of the lap-dog of the Duchess of Maribor uch. wth Mrs. Masham’s new silk gown, that settled the Oregan boundary question ‘An equally perplexing q om is the determi- mation of the western bovutary of Texas. It has mever been distinctly uederstood. because of the e@opflicting claims to the territory on the eastern side Of the RieGrande. OF BRISTOL BILL AND MBADOW®—aT- TEMITRD ASSASSINATION OF THR STATE at - TORNKY. OUR PARTILLE CORRMSPONDRACR. Danvicce, June 21, 1850. I volunteer my serviees in furnishing you with » statement of # shocking affair which has just ecourred in our Court House, and has thrown our village into & state of great consternation and excitement, ‘The felons Warburton alias Bristol Bill and Meadows, were brought into court this forenoon at half past ten o'clock, to receive sentence for the crime of eounter- feiting, of which they were found guilty last week, » report of which trial was published in your p: Immediately after sentence was passed, to wit, ten yeare imprisonment at hard labor, on each of the pri- toners, Bristol Bill suddenly, and with the agility of a tigor, spreng upon Mr. B. N. Davis, State Attorney, ond plunged tha blade of a large case knife full three inches into hie neck, just back of the right ear, striking the ck bone, and glancing backward instead of forward, to which fortunate circumstance of the backward direction the State Attorney is no doubt indebted tor his life. The first intimation that any one present had of the prisoner’s intention, was the sharp tinkling of his cheins he suddenly leaped forward to inflict the wound. Mr, D. fell reeling to the floor, uttering but a faint ery, the weapon sticking in the wound A by- stander pulled out the reeking blade, while Bill stood erect, witb a look of exultation depic: upoa his coun tenance. Indeed, while being doubly ironed, he re- peatedly stated that be had but one auxi d thas was the fear tl that it would not prove fatal--during which he evinced as muck coolness as though nothing of any particular momout had occurred. The family of the State Attornoy were immodiately rent for, and are anxiously attending by his bedsido. Mr. D. is in a very critical situation, though the attend- ing physicians encourage us with the hope that the wound will not prove fatal. OUR LYNDON CORRESPONDENCE. Lrxvox, Yormont, June 21, 1850. ‘The closing acone of Bristol Bill and Christian M dows’ trial is tragical and melaneholy—melancholy, not perhaps to them, but to the entire community. Yesterday Mr. Farrar submitted s motion tothe Court, on arrest of judgment, based upon some alloged errors in tho indictment. His Ionow deferred giving his opinion till this morning, when he came into the court reom and overruled the motion, and asked the not be pronounced against them. Bristol Bill rose, and after making several indignant remarks, told the Court he asked no mercy at his hands—Meadows seemed somewhat penitent, and begged mitigation. hard Iabor, in the State Prison at Windsor. Bliss N. Davis, Bsq., State Att'y, immediately passed round on the outside of the bar, stooped over, and began from his seat, went round to the side of Davis, and sud- denly stabbed him im the neck. Davis fell, and exclaimed, “The rascal has killed m: ried to his lodgings, where he continues ina most dan- nd it is feared by his surgeons and physicians that the wound will prove fatal. Bill stabbed him with a case knife, the blade of which in some qight incbes in length, and without handle Te made only one sudden thrust, end left the kuitestick- ing in the neck, where it remained till some one seized it and pulled it out. Much fear and excitement pro- vailed in the Court room; and though Bill was fottered he took control of the house for some minutes. The Judge commanded the officers to arrest him; but so completely terror-strieken wero all present that no one duret epproach him. tioned himself in one corner of the room and swore he would kill the first man who should approach him; but at last his counsel, Mr Farrar, went up to him, spoke few words, when without further resistanor, he. yielded. himsalf'to the hands of an officer, and was linmediately handoutfed and put in close confinement. Bill seemed frantio with rage, said he intended to kill Davis on the spot, and is “most G—d d—ed sorry he did not Whero he obtained the knife no one knows, but it is generally supposed somo one furnished him with it—for what pur- pore that individual best kno It is» most desperate we trust that in the end strict justioe and Bill receive bis just reward.
