The Senate were oceupied during yesterday’s session with the Omnibus bill, as Lit has been | termed, the friends of whieh appear determined to stiek it out until it is disposed of, one way or the | other. That body refused, by a positive vote, to adjourn even fur day, to allow the Senate eham- ber to be prepared fora summer session, thus evine- | ing their purpose to push it through to a conclu- sion. After a motion to adjourn to Monday next Was put, and lost, the remainder of the duy was occupied in debating the question of striking out the section relative to the boun- daries of Texas, which was lost by a strong vote. Mr. Benton, whose course throughout on the California question, has been contrary to the wishes and desires of a great majority of the | people, as well as to the bulk of his own conititu- ents, voted for the striking out. His reasons, how- ever, are very puerile, and are of no weight or moment. The public are strongly under the im- pression the time for voting on this vexed and agi- tating question, in connection with the new terri- tories, has tully arrived, and that it would be in order to settle it forever, and that immediately. ‘The warm weather may exercise some influence in bringing the Senate to a conclusion of some sort on the subject. ij A variety of miscellaneous business was trans- acted in the House of Representatives, such as the reception of reports from the Committee on Foreiga Affairs, and the Committee on Ways and Mean: for the purpose of carrying on the different branch of the government. For once, the California bill was laid aside temporarily. After attending to these matters, the House adjourned to this morn- img at the usual hour. Gryerat Tarton Gone to Newport.—We understand that General Taylor, President of the United States, has received an invitation from Preseott Hall, to spend the summer months at Newport. It is well known that Mr. Hall hasa Very pretty retreat on that island, called Malverne Farm, which is situated within cannon shot of the Ocean House, and another fashionable resort. Gen. Taylor's whole household from the White House, will probably be the guests of Mr. Hall, at Malverne Farm, where the old hero will endeavor to arrange all the difficulties of the government for the next session of Congress, during the quiet and pleasant evenings, under the moonlight of Newport. In consequence of the probability of General Taylor's visit to Newport, a great maay other fashionable people, in want of office, are going down to that watering place for the summmer. The practice, however, of citizens of New York spend. ing the warm months of summer on the sea coast, oreven at Saratoga, is very preposterous. There are plenty of sea breezes about New York, and it would be much better for the people of this metro- polie—who can afford it—te go into the interior of the country—to the mountaine—to Niagara Falls, which would be more pleasant and beneficial to them, than going to the sea shore, and bre the seme air which they inhale the whole year reund. But any one who wants peace and quiet, ought not to go either to Saratoga or Newport. Porvtar Peririon Comranrms —In faver of Mr. Clay's Compromise, according to the big sheets of Wail street, with only small cirealation, a petition has been signed by about twelve or fifteen thou- send persons. The whole thing hes been con- ducted in a privete way, for anything entrusted to the journals of Wall street must be nearly of a pri- vate charecter. They cannot make anything pub- lie. ‘They never reach the publie. A political ekque may, now and then, by special notice at a meeting, be instrueted to look for an article, or an imsarance compeny for a puff; but the public would ax soon look at Coney Island for information, as to a Wail street journal. This, then, is the reason that only a few thousands of names have been ap- pended to the petition. Why, had it been known that there was a petition, to show the sense of the people of this metropolis on Mr. Clay's Compro- mice, five-siaths would have been willing to sign it. Yet we deubt that the Compromise will pass. it | meets with the hostility of the cabinet, expressed in every possible form—in letters, editorials, sperches, and special pleas-of all sorte. The party cliques and factions oppose it, they know net why or wherefore, and all for the purpose of pleasing aset of men, whom they hope, by some charita- Die diepensation of Providence, will yet be lifted | from the mire of unpopularity, inthe slime of which | they have been floundering for the past eighteen months. They may struggle, with Mr. Benton to aid them by his sarcasm, irony, and ill-feeting, but the only result will be their entire discomfiture at Mr. Cluy’s efforts to eettle the great | Bo distantdey neble and patrione statesman, while those inimical to him—of whom the cabinet are the chief—will be pointed but by aserry peasage of the historian’s peo. j Ixorctwest or Moess Y. The absurdities of po- | yy, social equality. Wf negroes are, as the philosophical Fourierite, Greeley, maintains, descended from the lily white Adem and Eve, of Eden, and have the same rights as the old coat and boot-hitched trousers, we do not see why considerable contrasts of color could not be brought out at the opera, in the dress circle, provided the negroes engaging seats wear white kid gloves, and urrange their hair—in which busi- ness they are unco skilful. The mixture of white and black would lend'a lustre to the lily and the rose, “ add perfume to the violet,” and create quite a brilliant effect altogether. However, we do not think it would be prudent to try the experiment, unless the house should be otherwise wholly occu- pied with free soilers. The oppo. ition to the ap- | pearance of negroes ig public conveyances, by the political canting men efthe day, however, shows the hollowness of their pretensions and the absurdity of their theories. It shows that their whole political artillery on the slavery field is brought forward to blow out powder and create a great deal of smoke and noise, to no purpose but to humbug and deceive the publie mind. Now, we do not believe that the negro race are descended from the white Adam and Eve, any more than we think that they are the posterity of mon- keys. The monkey in a menagerie is a very inter- esting and curious animal, and could he chatter intelligibly, would, probably, be quite indignant at being classed with any other race. We venture to believe that if Lord Monboddo’s work on the affini- ty of their race was given to any respectable mon- key, he would tear it to pieces with perfect rage, and throw the leaves about with the most in- different contempt. It 1s this belief that makes us respectful towards the monkey race; and, for simi- lar reasons, we like .to pay a due respect to the negro and to the Anglo-Saxon race—and every other race—each in their proper course, and in their proper sphere. Itis lamentable to perceive in an immense country like ours, ennobled by the energy and perseverance of the most exalted race of the earth, and numbering over fifteen millions of white inhabitants, quarrelling, debating, agitating—and, by so doing, jeopardising the great interests of the people—a question that ought never to have been raised to the dignity of one, any more than the origin of the monkey tribe. When will the folly end? Tue Lawrence Divorce Casz.—Mrs. Sallie Lawrence has slipped out of the matrimonial noose, through the action of the legal authorities of Louisville. She is now free, and the Lawrence family are free, only that they have to supply the public with a correepondence between the par- ties, some time since anrounced as in preparation. We have received several letters from the West, on the subject of the divorce, some in favor of Sallie, and some not so complimentary, according to down-eastern views of decorum. All of these letters ehow that the belle of Louisville has great individuality of character—that she is only her own parallel—and that had her lines fallen in plea- sant places, all might have been well. So far as we can judge, fushionable life in Louisville and the West, compared to that of Boston and Down East, is as irreconcilable as fire and water, or gun- powder and fire. The mixture of the two is wholly out of the question. The one must die if merged in the other, and even a contact might produce a destructive explosion. Louisville and the West are free, unrestrained, go-aheadative. Boston and Down East are shackled, conventional, and slow- coachy. One would dash through the market place, ina feminine way, and only stop to pay a fine of twenty dollars, and be off again —the other would walk as demurely as a quaker, compared with the other earth-quaker, and never attract ex- | traordinary attention. Such is the difference be- tween the two. However, we shall not see the ead of this affair till the Boston family come out with that corre- spondence. Till then, people will blame them. How long does it take to pript a fashionable cor- respondence in Boston? Cannot the Printers’ Union hurry up the forms? We pause for a reply. If we do not get one, Greeley must write to the printers. Mx. Forrnst any wis Divoror.—A short time 0, Chevalier Wikoff went on from this city, as agent of Mrs. Forrest, to Philadelphia, for the pur- pose of seeing Mr. Forrest, and of bringing about a settlement of the difficulties ‘between the two parties, and an allowance to the lady of a certain | sum per annum. He arrived in Philadelphia on his miwion, and solicited an interview with Mr. Forrest. Mr. Forrest, knowing the animal, would have nothing to do with him. The Chevalier then applied to the counsel of Mr. Forrest, and between them, a very curious interview took place, highly illustrative of the peculiar, moral, and classical qua- lifications of Wikoff for his mission. Since then, the attempt to settle mattere quietly has failed, and we learn that new and important evidence has been discovered in reference to Mrs, Forrest, which | will be brought out before a court and jury in Phi- | k satisfaction of all parties—that i, a fiaal and posi- tive divorce.
