j diceana J. Moroney.—Sceond-hand Clothing.—La- Panett doo re ‘the ful om Geinieg, Orders &t No. Il, or through the port, ttended t a4 t of seanmely streeted er Raves want of cheap geateel MONEY MARKET. Sunpay, May 26-6 P. M. During the past week there has been considerable speculation and excitement in the stock market, and prices have experienced the usual fluctuations. The ‘ups and dowas have given the shorts an opportunity to fulfil their contracts at fair profits, which they doubtless availed themselves of. The speculators tor arisehave had, during the past week, a chance to Tealize an advance on previous purchases, on one or two of the fancies; but the probability is that they failed taturn it to account, as they usually hold on with greater tenacity, the higher prices g>. The daily variations in prices show how weak the market is, and also show that there is great danger of one of those sudden collapees which are frequently experienced when prices are so much inflated. It would be well Jor holders of fancy stocks generally, and particularly of those which are so much inflated, to remember the ides of June. There are, no doubt, operators in Wall street connected with the present inflation f prices, who have cause to recollect the 12th of June, 1845. On that day most of the fancies fell off in a few hours, ten, fifteen, and twenty per cent—a perfect panic prevailed among holdera, and fortunes were lost at one fell swoop, Similar scenes are likely to be realized again any moment; and speculators for ® rise may eomedown town any morning, and find all their fine ealeulations scattered to the four winds, and their stocks selling at a decline of ten, fifteen, or twenty per cent, and no market for them at even that deprecia- tion, This is always to be apprehended by dealers in | fancy stocks; and the regular street operators know it very well, and in all their arrangements, make it a point to have as few of the fancies on hand as possible, when prices have become so enormously inflated. Heretofore, the brokers have been able to saddle out- siders with immense quantities of these fancy stocks, and have, therefore, lost very little when the explosion took pluce, but, on the contrary, have usually made money by purchasing of outside holders, at a ruinous depreciation, the very stocks they previously sold them at high prices. This year the brokers have not been able to draw in outsiders to the usual extent, and the collapse, when it comes, will fall where it should— ‘upon the brokers who have inflated the bubble. The commercial accounts from California, by tho ‘Tennessee, are more favorable than those received by the previous steamer. Prices of real estate, in the older settled parts of the country, had settled down ‘upon a more reasonable, permanent basis; but in the new places springing up at different points in the mining districts, prices for lots raled enormously high, and the usual speculation and excitement existed. As coon, however, as they have run their course, a re- action will take place, and those who keep cool, and are in no hurry, will be able to purchase at compara- tively low prices. All kinds of merchandise had large- ly depreeiated in market value, and lumber was a per- fect drug, prices current not paying charges for freight. Provisions and breadstuffs were doing better; bat prices were ruinous to shippers in the United States, and the adviees received by the last and seve- | ral previous eteamers, are calculated to check any very extensive shipments from this part of tho world. | From the mines, the accounts continue favorable, and the prospects flattering. The Tennessee brought down $551,361 in gold dust and coin. It is stated that the passengers have $200,000 in their trunks; but wo know not upon what authority the statement is made, and we give give it for what it is wort The annexed comparative statement exhibits the quotations for the principal speculative stocks in this market for each day of the past week, and at the close ofthe weck previous, It will be seen that prices for the leading faneies have fluctuated considerably during the past week :— Qvorations yor Tie Princieas Stoces m ras New Youe Manxzr. Our remarks upon the policy of the board of manage- ment of the Erie Railroad Company, have had the ef- fect to make some men think. We cannot doubt but that people will begin to inquire why it is that every paper in the city is tull of extravagant praises of this concern—why it is that everybody's ears are greeted with the inquiry, “ What is the price of Erie stock to- day! Why are certain directors to be seen, at all hours, holding iadividuals by the buttonhole, in Wall street, and volumteoring the opinion that the price of the securities are still very low, assuring them that the stock will go to par, and the bonds to an enormous premium ?—that certain brokers are largely short— that there are sixty thousand shares and thirty thou- gand stockholders—that large lots of the bonds have been taken for foreign account, and that orders exist for a much larger sum? These inquiries will be made, are making; and the answers cannot but produce an gnfluence which must shake, if it does not destroy: public confidence in the whole coneern, The idea of large purchases ot the second mortgage bonds for fo- reign account, so industriously circulated by the ma- nagement, is a freud. and ought to be rebuked by the community. It is asserted to influence buyers here at these enormous prices, to enable the managers them- relves—the leading, the principal operators —to get rid of their own. It is done to maucfacture a more favor- able public opinion—and coming from the souree that it does, it isan outrage upon the good sense of our eiti- sens. The transactions in the shares controlled sod managed by the same men, (men whose very counte- nances go to prove the feeling uppermost ia their minds.) inasmuch asthey manage superintend the concerns of the company, have been a disgrace to Wall street; and that is enying a great deal. The interests of the company have become of secondary importance, ‘and the large private trac the primary object. The movement has no doubt caused the investment of tens of thousands of dollars in the securities, at twenty-five per cent advance over the priee they ruled at fou months since— some of It, no doubt, for permanent. and some for speculative objects. A change is certain to All past experience proves this—nothing ean resist it. All the power of the self-confident and most busy speculators, aided by the Bank that figures conspicuously in the matter, can no more cheek the eounter curront when it sets, than could the letters of Mr. Biddle maintain the price of United State: x tock.
