now just what they ean take. If it goes completely cut of sight, the loss cannot be much, It would be » good stock for speculators who have very little eapital: ‘and wish to lose that, to take hold of, All the fancies must, at present priecs, hang heavy in the hands of helders, and it will be hard work to get any of them above ruling rates, rie Railroad may be further in- Gated; #0 may Harlem and Reading Railroads; butthey have all reached dangerous points, and the chances are ip fact five out of six in favor of a fall. Hudson River Railroad has advanced within the past week about ten per dent. the cause of which is, doubtless, the fact, that the eompany have made very favorable arrange- ments with several large eapitalists, for furnishing fands to earry on the work to a speedy completion. ‘This will enable the company to make more favorable eontracts than it could by an issue of its bonds direct to eontractors, and guaranties the construction of the road upon the most economical terms. Whether the rise in the market value of the stock will be permanent, depends entirely upon the quantity offered for sale. Mo far, very Nttle has been brought ant, and the stock appears to be well held. The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer ef thie port, amounted to $116,000; payments, $112,- $96 $4—balance, $4.874.015 67. ‘The transfers of Tnited States stock to foreigners, for the week ending the 18th instant, amount to $216,950, as follows: loan of 1842, $6,000; of 1849, $4,000; of 1847, $191,450; of 1848, $15,500. Yhe Knickerbocker Viré Insurance Company have declared a dividend of six per cent., payable on and after the first day of June. It ie astonishing what an immense amount of money has been sunk in the various works of internal im- provement eonsiructed, and in the course of construc- Men, in this country. Very few reiest & memént on this subject; and during the different periods of specu+ lations, which have, within thefpast twenty years, been experienced, every one ha® rushed headlong into every hind of bubble which has presented itse! It is wach times as we are now passing through, that the originators of new schemes take advantage of to push forward and draw in men of means. The most fuyora- ble estimates are put forth of cost, and the most extra: vagant ertimates of income made, for the purpose o attracting the visionary, and deluding those who are inflieted with an over supply of confidence. We find fm the papers now, notices of the formation of dozens of new companies, Live Stock Insurance Companies, Life and Health Insurance Companies, Insurance of Debts, &e., Ke., are all before the public for su'sscrip- tiens to oapital stock and for support. Railroads and eanale are contemplated and laid out in all parts of the country, Mining companies spring up like mush- rooms. Discoveries of gold are made in all sections of the Union, and those who have a little capital and wish ‘to invest it permanently, where it is represented a divi” dend of ten, twenty, and thirty per cent will be declared senually, will find no diMeculty in doing so. These things have been done frequently before, and we have ne doubt they will frequently be done again. Bubbles are apparently as easily inflated now as they ever were, and there are probably as many pigeons to be plueked now as in times past. Almost every civilised country on the face of the earth has suffered more or less from these bubbles, and the future will probably ‘be as prolific in them asthe past has been. [n illus- tration of the truth of this, we have only to turn to the first and last chapter of the history of railroads in this eountry and in Europe. In Great Britain, the depre- ciation in this species of property has been enormous having been, in the aggregate, full five hundred mil” lions of dollars; and in the United States, the depre- eiation has been proportionably greater, having been tall fifty per cent of the aggregate amount invested. Railreeds in the United States have cost at least twohu: dred millions of dollars, and they are not worth, at this moment, a cent more than one half of that amount, or about one bundred millions of dollars; and we doubt if the aggragate net earnings of the whole will pey six per eoent om the present estimated value. Speculators may, for a time, inflate prices for these things; and if wetake the present market value ase criterion, the @epresiatiod may not appear so great as wo have mamed ; but the ineome cannot be affected by the movements of speculators, or the work of depreciation arrested by Wall street financiering. The very sddi- tions now being made to the miles of railroad in this country, are hastening the aggregate depreciation, and eempetition must, before the lapse of many years, bring about the ruin of many who have their all in- vested in them. While this result is rapidly approach- ‘ing this mode of investment, the works will be of vast serviee to the country at large. Bvery railroad built will aid in developing the resources of the country, no ‘matter how many individuals may be ruined in thei: onstruction. The evil will be partial, but the good ‘wolversal. ‘We have had, as yet, comparatively little eompeti- ‘tion in railroads in this country ; in Great Britain it bas been carried to a ruinous extent, and has been one ef.the principal eauses of the break-down and depreci- etion in this species of property. We can recollect when « mania existed for building turnpikes, as great as that now raging in relation to railroads—when trust fands and the widow's and orphan’s mite were invested in those works, as the safest and most produc- tive of the dey. Bvery one was anxious to have o turnpike run past or through his farm, and people mortgaged their real estate and landed property, to raise money to purchase stock in these concerns. A large majority ef the criginal subscribers to these tarnpikes lost large sums of money. and a few of those who eame into possession at an enormous deprecia- tion, made money. A similar course of things will be realised in ratlroads, and aftor many years, when they have ehanged hands three or four times, at « heavy reduction in value each time, they will fall into the peeression of parties who may make them productive Jovestments, To do this, they mast undergo vast im- provements in the system of management, and vast reductions in the expenditures, The losses already realised by the original subscribers to railroads, in ery section of the country, have nearly destroyed all confidence in them, and made it utterly impossible to fill up the espital of any new company contemplated, porate eapacity, to these works, when the citizens of said cities, towns, he., ahall, by © special vote, give eonrent. i 3 ete? sa0sag% —— BEES iB» * 3 us 0 Ohio Indiana State S's ioe Pens * * ad nie 1 8 Fa = we es oe oe ee F= Baef tom, fell, 10 Am 48 a de scrip 1S, fy Betege River RR i. tose &.
