There was a cabinet meeting last night, whieh con- summated the editorial change in the Republic, Thus we go The change in the management of the Republic per- plexes everybody. A determination on the part of the President and eabinet to defeat Mr Clay end bi promise, is supposed to be at the bottom of the affair. It is suid that @ throat of an instant resignation of the whole cabinet compelled General Taylor to discharge Bullitt. The new organ grinder may throw some light on the subject to-morr and the Galphin report. now daily expected, may change the complexion of aifaire very much. At present the confusion is indeseribable, The whigs are in mutiny, and Bullitt is siek in bed. ‘The Union is in the utmost distress about the new Southern paper, All the organs ore rich to-day, and everything is in confusion. It is reported that Mr. Edmund Burke retires from the editorship of the Union, on the 20th of this month, It is said that John R Bartlett, one of your book- rellers, of the firm of Bartlett & Welford, has beem appointed U. 8. As an appendix to the above announcement of our telegraphic correspondent, we give the vale- dictory of the editors of the Republic It speaks for itself. Messrs. Gideon & Co. still retain their position as publishers. The change appears to be only in the editorial department :— (From the Washington Republic, May 14) TO OUR SUBSCRIBERS To the five and twenty thousand subscribe during the last ten months have enrolled ther upon our lists, we feel that we owe a word, by explanation, for the course that we deem it our duty who, ves ot to pursue ith the present number, the Republic passes into other editorial bands. It is sufficient for us tossy that ersonal differences exist between ourselves and mem- oot of the cabinet, that are inconsistent with the rela- tions in which we stand towards President Taylor and the whig party. In this state of things, and with the determiwation to interpose no obstacte to the preser- x tion of harmony and good will between President ‘aylor and the whigs, we Shave thought it our duty to position in which we can no ai in our view of certain con! questions, conslatent! with self-respect. Personal fortune we can sacrifice without regret “Ca ase sociations and relations are too sacred to be trifed with or abandoned. In taking leave of our friends, it is that we should say that our confidence in Prosident Taylor is unimpaired hat the sentiment which bas in- duced us to Bacacthy the volupteer servicers of in his cause remains as ardent and as unalloyed as when first took the field in his behalf. In his in- grity—in bis uneelfish patriotism —in his nati ‘ ‘utrality, and elevated honor retain an imished eonfidence, and had not reason to be- that this sentiment is fully reciprocated, we should never abandon the position which we surrender only from our deference to his feelings. and our an- bounded respect and reverence for his character an@ his services.
