WYATT, 12 Chrystie, dere MONEY MARKET. Tuvnspay, May 9-6 P.M. There is nothing new in the stock market, Molders are evidently dissatisfied at the course of prices, and 4 it dificult to keep them up to the present point, Most of the fancies are so%much inflated that the steadiness of prices is a matter of great astonishment. The whole movement is confined to Wall street, and the statement made yesterday, in relation to the stock of the Harlem Railroad Company, is a fair illustration of the way most of the faney stocks are held. More than two-thirds of euch stocks as the Long Island Norwich and Worcester, Farmers’ Loan, Morris Canal, and Conton Company, ate held in Wall «treet, and are moved toand fro by speculators, to suit the will of the dominant party. It costs something tocarry such an enormous quantity of unproductive securities; and if the interest account of some of the largest holders could be reen, it would show a state of things little dreamed of by outsiders, who consider every advance in prices so much actual profit. The bears frequently make & handsome profit. merely on the Interest con tinuelly ranning in theirfavor. In one instance, there | ware balance in favor of a houre in the street, in thie item, at the close of & year's business, of nearly fifty thourand dollars. All thir, ten times more, came out of the pockets of outsiders and bull speculators in ‘the street, and the bears will continue to drain th pockets of euch operators in this way, as long as peo- ple deal in sueh unprofitable tocke. The receipte at the cfilee of the Agsistant Treasurer of this port, to-day, $26 241 07 — balance, $4,005, The National Vire Insurance Company have deelared 8 dividend of one-eighth per cent, payable on the Lith i t. There probably never was a the when (he froighting Dosiness war ro much depressed as at the present m-: ment. Prices are ruinously low, and veasels daily clear from our principal porte but half loaded, or in ballast. Hundreds of + is have been for months lying idle, 4 the lorees this yenr, In interest, Ineurance, preeiation, ke, must be enormous, The withdrawal of such @ large fleet of first class ships from the carry. ing trade of the Atlantic, we supposed would have given those left plenty of businets, at remonerating rates; but such hae mot been the ease. About eight hundred veesels have left the Atlantic ports for Cail- fornia, and most of them are on their way round, or lying late in the port of San Francitco. They are just as well off where they areas they wonld be here, for we have not employment for much more than half thore left. The truth f#. the building of voesels {a this country hae progressed more rapidiy during the past hve yetrs. then business for them, and the carrying trode Sill doubtiers, for @ few years, be unprofitable, Not- withetanding this etate of (hin, | the gloomy pros. Peet, our ship yards are all full of employ ment, and ship builders at the Bart ail actively engaged in turn- ivg ont new veseele, There must boa eollapse in the Dus!ness. unless something comes Adie sbips. Bhip building must ended, or until the demand meets supply. The fact is, that steamships such a large part of the carrying trade ships, that the latter must continue to depreciate importance and value. One occan steamship can easi- tant routes of trade and travel, that railing have been withdrawn, or, where continued, have given: poor returns. Ina few years, the trade and travel be- tween this country and Europe will be almost entirely” monopolized by steamships, and in this view of the eags, . there is no doubt, in our mind, that the amount of railing tonnage now in existence, will suffice for least the next five years, It has lately been ascertained, that under theaetap propriating lands, to ald in the improvement of the navigation of the Wabash river, the State of Illinois will be entitled, under the act making approptiations: for the construction of the Iilinois and Michigan Ca- nal, to some 35,000 more acres of land than what has- been already set apart, This will swell the eanal fand* just so much, towards the final liquidation of the cana? debt.
